3 The Dean and Chapter/Y Deon a r Cabidwl The Diocesan Office/Swyddfa r Esgobaeth High St/Stryd Fawr St Asaph/Llanelwy LL17 0RD Dean : The Very Reverend Nigel H Williams. Deon : Y Tra Barchedig Nigel H Williams NigelWilliams@churchinwales.org.uk To all enquirers for the post of Canon Precentor Thank you for expressing an interest in the role of Canon Precentor at St Asaph Cathedral. In St Asaph we take great delight in being the smallest ancient cathedral in Great Britain and in having a big heart. We may not be on the scale of a major English cathedral, but the focus of our daily life is still that of prayer in the rhythms of the daily office, and of a rich choral tradition. There is a great sense of involvement in the cathedral with many people who are part of the congregation on Sundays also being volunteers in many aspects of the life of the Cathedral during the week. There is a close and vibrant relationship between the Cathedral and Diocesan Staff, and the administration of the cathedral takes place at the diocesan office. The title of Canon Precentor is an ancient title in St Asaph which is given to one of the members of the Cathedral Chapter. The stall of the Cantor is one of six stalls which are given to the Prebendary Canons, (the senior Canons of the chapter). In living memory, the Cantor has carried the title but not undertaken the role. Following a review of the Cathedral two years ago, it was recommended that the person who ministers alongside the Dean in St Asaph should take on the role of Precentor, and the Bishop graciously agreed to give the title with the role. The successful candidate will work closely with the Dean in the day to day running of the Cathedral and the parish and will have oversight of the music working with the Director and Assistant Director of Music. The Canon Precentor will liaise with the Canon Residentiary to organise diocesan services. We are eager to appoint an experienced Parish Priest with a passion for liturgy and a good understanding of church music both choral and modern. The Cathedral team in St Asaph is very committed to our common life together is Christ, in being the Mother church to the diocese and the focus of unity gathered around the Bishop s seat. We also strive to welcome pilgrims whoever they may be and extend the hospitality of Christ. I hope that the information pack has all the information you need as you consider your next step. If you require any further information do get in touch with me. Yours faithfully, The Very Revd Nigel H. Williams

4 PROFILE OF ST ASAPH CATHEDRAL AND THE RECTORIAL BENEFICE OF ST ASAPH St Asaph Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of St Asaph in the Province of Wales serving parishes in counties of Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Wrexham and parts of Powys. Sitting at the gateway to the beautiful Vale of Clwyd in North Wales, the small city of St Asaph (population circa 4000) is five miles inland from the resort town of Rhyl. St Asaph is close to the A55 coastal link route between Anglesey and the North West of England. Within easy reach of Anglesey, Snowdonia, Chester, Liverpool, Manchester and Shrewsbury. St Asaph was granted city status by Her Majesty the Queen in her Diamond Jubilee Year. The Cathedral is situated at the top of the High Street and unlike many other cathedrals; St Asaph Cathedral does not have a traditional precinct but is sited in its own grounds. The Parish Church is located at the lower end of the High Street. The two churches have distinct yet complementary worshipping communities. With a rich spiritual and cultural heritage spanning the centuries St. Asaph Cathedral is an oasis of stability and calm in a rapidly changing world. As a prime visitor attraction the Cathedral offers a natural gateway for tourism across the Vale of Clwyd and beyond. The Cathedral aims to create an open and inclusive atmosphere in which the rich variety and diversity of people who enter it to visit or worship find a warm welcome. We endeavour to combine the best of our history and heritage with an opportunity to explore faith and hope. Through openness, accessibility and hospitality, we welcome you to stay a while in this place. People should feel comfortable enough to explore not only where they are but who they are, and move onwards refreshed and fulfilled. The Cathedral is a focus for the life of the diocese, the ministry of the Bishop and exists for the glory of God and as a sign of His Kingdom in the world. To this end we are committed to offering a daily round of prayer and worship, to be an instrument of God s mission where the Christian faith is explored, practised, preached, taught and interpreted. A place where the expression of God s gifts of creativity is encouraged and where peoples own gifts are offered to the wider mission of the church. It brings together the family of the Diocese for significant festivals throughout the liturgical year and hosts major diocesan occasions: ordinations, Chrism Eucharists, diocesan confirmations and Easter Vigils. The Cathedral extends a welcome to individuals, parishes, deaneries and mission areas and engages with the wider diocese by the acceptance of invitations to preach, and the choir s contribution to services. The Cathedral prays for the mission of the Diocese on a daily basis and gives encouragement and support wherever it can. We also extend an invitation to all the services that are held in the Cathedral and clergy are encouraged to take part if they wish to do so. It is also a centre of pilgrimage for thousands of visitors every year, extending a welcome to people from all over the world to share our rich Christian heritage.

5 THE BUILDINGS AND PROPERTY The Cathedral A rare and remarkable building, only 182 feet in length it is the smallest medieval Cathedral in Britain. It is open to visitors and worshippers free of charge every day of the year. The rich history of the Cathedral and description of the building is outlined on the Cathedral website: The greatest treasure in the Cathedral is an original William Morgan bible published in William Morgan s translation of the bible is credited with keeping the Welsh language alive for future generations. Along with the memorial outside the front of the Cathedral, this chapel commemorates the men responsible for the translation of the Scriptures into Welsh. In recent years major projects such as the installation a new glass porch at the West Door and replacement floors have enhanced the aesthetic beauty of the Cathedral, and the old gas boilers have been replaced with modern energy efficient boilers. The Cathedral is currently seeking funding to implement the Cathedral Development Plan. When complete, this major project will enable the Cathedral to provide hospitality, flexible multi-purpose space, multi media interpretation and modern conveniences. The Cathedral is administered from the Diocesan Office which is located within the confines of the Cathedral grounds.

6 The Parish Church The Parish Church, like most of those in the Vale of Clwyd, consists of two equal and parallel aisles separated by an arcade. Prominent Welsh historical figures Dic Aberdaron and Sion Tudyr are buried in the churchyard. The fabric of the building is in good repair and the PCC are looking to re-order the interior. More information about the church can be found on: Canon Precentor s Residence Cefn Coed, Upper Denbigh Road, St Asaph is a detached 5 bedroomed, 2 bathroom property situated on the Upper Denbigh Road, approximately half a mile from the Cathedral. The building is in need of refurbishment and funding is currently being sought for this purpose. 18 THE DIOCESE OF ST ASAPH - DIOCESAN PROFILE The Diocese of St Asaph is a diverse and hopeful community of faith. With roots in the Celtic church and a wealth of character and tradition, we seek to continue to uncover our shared vocation as God s people in the Church in Wales in the north east of the Province. We are a diocese in good heart and seek to persist in responding joyfully to God s challenge. The Diocese follows the English/Welsh border in the east, whilst the western edge is delineated by the Conwy Valley. The northern boundary runs along the North Wales coast as far as Llandudno, but only takes in part of that town. The southern boundary runs from the lower end of Llyn Tegid (Lake Bala) across to Dolfor, just south of Newtown in Powys. Ecclesiastically it is bordered by the dioceses of Chester, Lichfield and Hereford on the northern and eastern sides. To the south we border Swansea and Brecon diocese and to the west, Bangor. The diocese is predominantly rural, with many parishes having populations of less than However, there are important and continually developing industrial and commercial areas around Deeside (one of the largest industrial parks in Europe) and Wrexham and significant smaller developments along the two main arterial roads (A55 and A483). The coastal strip is home to traditional holiday resorts and tourism is an important industry in many parts of the diocese. The largest employers are the local authorities through education and the health services with two large general district hospitals at Bodelwyddan and Wrexham. Wrexham hosts a refugee and asylum seekers support centre (supported by the diocese), while migrant worker groups in the region (largely white EU) are involved in both industry and agriculture. A significant number of care workers come from the far east. Together with many of the rural areas in the UK, the agriculture sector within the diocese has endured many shocks and changes, including the foot and mouth crisis, the changing structures of agricultural support from the EU, increasing fuel costs and the unfolding impact of global warming. Welshpool and St Asaph have two of the largest livestock markets in Europe. The Diocese of St Asaph is at an exciting time in its life as we work towards a more collaborative style of ministry under the banner of 2020 Vision, which has been born out of the Church in Wales Review which took place in Parishes and emerging Mission Areas are being challenged to discover together how we Unlock our Potential. We have a vision of a church working closely together and going for growth - a church where ministry teams of ordained and lay people work together to enable the whole church to grow to its full potential.
