Born in Kansas City, MO, March 8, 1907; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1927; ordained at Immaculate Conception Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, He received an M.A. in Church History from The Catholic University. He was a teacher in the major seminary for eleven years. Later he was superior in DeSoto, MO, Okmulgee, OK, and Wichita, KS. He became assistant Provincial Procurator of the St. Louis Province in 1950 and procurator in He was an easy-going man, kind and gentle. A collector he never threw anything away! He always served the province well. 55 years professed; 50 years ordained Sacred Heart Center, Rolling Meadows, IL began operation as a retreat center, chiefly for students of Catholic high schools in the Chicago Archdiocese. Rev. John Andree was the first superior. Operation of the Center was discontinued on June 19, REV. ROBERT PARK McCARTHY died at the age of 78 while stationed at St. Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. Born in Kansas City, MO, August 24, 1920; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1941; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, January 12, He obtained a Master s Degree in economics at The Catholic University. He served as a parish priest in several parishes, the longest being in Kansas City, MO, and Detroit, MI. He was a strong willed individual, who never hesitated to express his opinion. 57 yrs. professed, 51 yrs. ordained. Buried in family plot in St. Mary s Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. DECEMBER The American Mission Stations, hitherto assigned to the Belgium Province, were transferred to the Austrian Province by Rev. Joseph Passerat, the Transalpine Vicar General. Saint John N. Neumann was confirmed as Vice- Provincial REV. WILLIAM CARROLL died at the age of 66 at St. Mary s Assumption Parish, New Orleans, LA. Born in Limerick, Ireland, November 8, 1872;

2 professed at Kirkwood, MO, October 15, 1897; ordained at Kansas City, MO, July 25, He attended Mungret College, Ireland before coming to the U.S. He was a teacher and superior at Kirkwood, MO. He pioneered in Fresno, CA, was an army chaplain in World War I and later rector in Denver,l CO. He was a good and upright man. 41 years professed; 38 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorists Cemetery, Lacombe, LA REV. RICHARD O REGAN died at the age of 88 at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, March 27, 1870; professed at Kirkwood, MO, August 22, 1895; ordained at Kansas City, MO, July 25, He is said to have heard between 200 and 300 confessions of religious women each week while stationed in San Antonio, TX. He spent the last thirty-eight years of his life in the Alexian Brothers mental hospital in Oshkosh, WI, where he died. 63 years professed; 58 years ordained. Originally buried in the cemetery at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Moved in 1988 to the Redemptorist Cemetery. Liguori, MO The Foundation of St. Alphonsus was canonically established at Brooklyn Center, Minneapolis, MN; it had begun on January 28, Rev. Roger Godbout was the first superior. DECEMBER VEN. VITUS MICHAEL DI NETTA died at Tropea, Italy. Born in Avellata, Avellino, on February 1787; professed at S. Angle a Cupolo, April 25, 1808; ordained at Lacedonia, March 30, He was renowned for his missions in Calabria and for a time he served as novice master. The cause for his beatification was introduced in 1910, and the decree of the heroicity of his virtues was signed in The Foundation of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was begun at Kansas City, MO. Property was purchased outside the city, near Westport, for a mission house, minor seminary, and novitiate. It later served as major seminary. Rev. Frederick Faivre was first superior. DECEMBER The Sacred Congregation of the Propagation of the Faith appointed Very Rev. Clarence Duhart as Prefect Apostolic of the newly established Prefecture

3 of Udon Thani in Thailand. Up to this time, Father Duhart was superior of the Bangkok Viceprovince. The Holy See declared the Prefecture a Diocese, December 18, 1965 and Msgr. Duhart was appointed Bishop. In 1975 he resigned his see and returned to the Redemptorist community in Bangkok, Thailand REV. PETER YOUNGBLOOD died at the age of 84 at Liguori Mission House, Liguori, MO, Born in Chicago, IL, August 30, 1888; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 15, 1912; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, A parish priest most of his life, he served for a time in Portland, OR, and was rector in San Antonio, TX. He was a very meticulous person, always willing to be of service. He anglicized his German name (Jungblut) at the time of World War I. He spent his last years serving as a chaplain to the Redemptoristine Nuns at Liguori, MO. 60 years professed; 55 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO REV. MILTON GIRSE died at the age of 88 at St. Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. Born in St. Louis, MO, May 4, 1914; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1935; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, Fr. Girse began his ministry as a parish priest at St. Joseph s in Denver, CO. He was a hospital Chaplain, a military Chaplain for eight years, and a parish priest at Kirkwood, MO, Denver, CO, Wichita, KS, and Chicago, IL. But Milt was best known for his work as the Provincial Procurator from He was involved with the building of both the high school seminary at Edgerton, WI, and the College Seminary at Waterford, WI. In his mid-seventies, he returned to Denver, CO, and worked for three more years as a hospital Chaplain. He was an ardent worker who always accepted the hard assignments. 67 years professed; 62 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO. DECEMBER CLERICAL STUDENT JAMES BURNS died at the age of 19 while stationed at St. Joseph s College, Kirkwood. Born in St. Louis, July 10, 1881; professed at St. Louis, on his deathbed, December 1, He died of tuberculosis. He was permitted to keep the habit while living with relatives in hopes of regaining his health. 4 days professed. Originally buried in the cemetery at St. Joseph s College, Kirkwood, MO. Moved to the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

4 1962 REV. GILBERT WATTERS died at the age of 58 while stationed at St. Gerard s, Pine City, MN. Born in Mount Pleasant, IA, February 4, 1904; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1927; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, He was a teacher in the minor seminary. He was superior at Glenview, IL, and wholeheartedly devoted to the retreat movement. He served as a mission preacher for many years and was much in demand for priests retreats. He was a man of deep faith and piety. Died after an extended illness at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, IA. 35 year professed; 32 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Glenview, IL The Foundation of Holy Redeemer was canonically established at Marituba, Belem, Brazil as the site of Brazilian minor seminary. Rev. Robert Hirsch was first superior and director. The foundation was closed on August 1, REV. DONALD FRANCIS MILLER (II) died at the age of 68 in Chicago, IL. Born in Oconomowoc, WI,l July 1, 1928; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1954; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, To distinguish him from the older Donald Miller, the editor of Liguorian magazine, with whom he shared the same first, middle, and last name, he was referred to as Don Miller II. He transferred from St. Francis Seminary Milwaukee, WI, after completing a year of theology there. He spent three years in Brazil. He served as a parish priest, becoming superior and pastor at Holy Redeemer Parish, Detroit, MI, and St. Michael s Parish, Chicago, IL. He requested a leave of absence in 1984 and lived outside the community until his death. 42 years professed; 39 years ordained. Buried (Ashes) in St. Jerome Parish Cemetery, Oconomowoc, WI REV. CARL VINCENT SCHWARZ died at the age of 87 at St. Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. Born in Halstead, KS, August 2, 1916; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1937; ordained Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 1, He ministered in 22 communities during his life as a Redemptorist. He was truly a man for all seasons able to do work as a missionary, parish priest, retreat director, vocation minister, and formation presence. Like his brother, Paddy, Carl was a true Irish spirit, always smiling and gregarious. He died peacefully resting in his chair at St. Clement s Health Care Center. 66 years professed; 61 years ordained. Buried along with his priest brother Paul (Paddy) in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

5 DECEMBER Picture of Our Mother of Perpetual Help was exposed for public veneration for the first time in the U.S. in St. James Church, Baltimore, MD. The first altar dedicated under this title in this country was consecrated by Bishop Persico, Vicar Apostolic of Florida REV. JOHN PHILLIPS died at the age of 84 at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Born in Chicago, IL, April 4, 1892; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1914; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, He was affectionately known as Doc to his confreres. A parish priest and mission preacher, he pioneered at Downey and Whittier, CA, and was superior at Chicago, IL. As a missionary, he teamed up with Liguori Nugent and the team was dubbed the poet and the peasant. He was a gentle man who savored life. His last years were spent praying the rosary for others. 62 years professed; 57 years ordained. Buried along with his brother Br. Walter (Ambrose) Phillips in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Glenview, IL REV. ROBERT E. RIETCHECK died at the age of 52 at Villa Redeemer, Glenview, IL. Born in Angelus, KS, November 26, 1937; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1958; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, He served in many areas of ministry: teacher and superior at Edgerton, WI, parish priest at Minneapolis, MN, and Kirkwood, MO,l the Apostolate of the Pen at Liguori, and parish priest in Alaska for three years. In his later years, he devoted himself to further study at C.T.U. in Chicago, IL, and in California. He was deeply appreciated by those he worked for. Died suddenly of a heart attack. 31 years professed; 26 years ordained. Buried along with his priest brother Gerald, in St. Paul s Church Cemetery, Angelus, KS. DECEMBER The First Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in St. Louis, MO. was dedicated in the Rock Church with a Solemn Triduum CLERICAL STUDENT BENEDICT EVARISTUS IBEKWE (Ude Ezeibekwe-Uche Ikechukwu) died at the age of 25 while stationed at

6 DECEMBER 8 Redeemer House, Ibadan, Nigeria. Born at Mgbowo, Nigeria, January 3, 1969; professed at Liguori House, Ibadan, July 16, He had been a salesman in his own business in Lagos. He was known as thoughtful and dependable, an easy person to be with in community. He was killed in an automobile accident at Ikieja, Lagos State, Nigeria. Less than five months professed. Buried in Ibada, Nigeria The Picture of Our Mother of Perpetual Help was solemnly exposed for the first time at St. Michael s Parish, Chicago, IL. This was probably the first shrine in the St. Louis Province. It was dedicated during a mission attended by five thousand people and conducted by six confreres The Foundation of St. Alphonsus Parish was begun at Fresno, CA. Previously, the old Mission San Gabriel and also St. Boniface s Church in San Francisco, CA, had been offered as the site of a foundation. The present church was built in Father Henry Weber was the first superior. The foundation was closed on August 2, DECEMBER REV. JOHN DeDYCKER died at the age of 61 at St. Michael s Parish, Chicago, IL. Born in Temsche, Flanders, Belgium, June 2, 1822; professed at Baltimore, MD, December 8, 1851; ordained in Europe, May 29, He entered the C.Ss.R. as a priest, began his novitiate at St. Trond, Belgium and came to the U.S. as novice in 1851 where he finished novitiate at Baltimore, MD. He was provincial during the Civil War; he was drafted in 1862 but avoided military service by hiring a substitute for $900. He systematized Redemptorist education and put the American Province on sound financial basis. He was rector at St. Michael s, Parish, Chicago, IL and remained there as an assistant until his death. 32 years professed; 36 years ordained. Buried in St. Boniface Cemetery, Chicago, IL REV. HENRY GIESEN died at the age of 67 at St. Michael s Parish, Chicago, IL. Born in Horst, Holland, September 16, 1826; professed at St. Trond, Belgium, July 17, 1848; ordained at Philadelphia, PA, March 26, He was a physical and intellectual giant. A born orator, he preached equally well in English, French, German, Dutch, and Flemish. 45 years professed; 40 years ordained. Buried in St. Boniface Cemetery, Chicago, IL.

Born in Chicago, IL,l October 5, 1871; professed at Kirkwood, MO, September 8, 1891; ordained at Kansas City, MO, October 28, He contracted tuberculosis in the major seminary and was not able to exercise his priestly ministry. 5 years professed; ordained less than a month. Buried in St. Mary s Church, New Orleans, LA REV. JOSEPH DISTLER died at the age of 66 at St. Alphonsus (Rock) Parish, St. Louis, MO. Born in New Orleans, LA, May 10, 1850; professed at Annapolis, MD, September 1, 1873; ordained at Ilchester, MD, September 1, As a missionary, he worked mostly in Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, and California. He was superior in several communities, and built the present church in Kansas City, MO. 43 years professed; 39 years ordained. Originally buried in the cemetery at St. Joseph s College, Kirkwood, MO. Moved to the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO REV. PAUL HOGAN died at the age of 56 at St. Gerard s Parish, San Antonio, TX. Born in Massena, IA, November 12, 1907; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1934; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, An older vocation, he had attended Creighton University, Omaha, NE, and worked at his father s bank in Massena before joining the C.Ss.R. A parish priest all his active life, he pioneered in work for African Americans in St. Louis, MO. He was a man for the poor. Died of cancer. 29 years professed; 24 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Glenview, IL. DECEMBER The Foundation of the Holy Redeemer was canonically established at Bayou Gardens, Lacombe, LA. It had begun on September 16, Situated in the part of Lacombe called Bayou Gardens, it was purchased from Richard Leche, former Governor of Louisiana, to serve as a minor seminary for the New Orleans Vice-Province. Classes began on September 12, Byron Krieger was the first superior and Albert Babin was the first director of the minor seminary. It ceased as minor seminary in 1980 and its name changed to Holy Redeemer Mission Center, serving mostly as a youth retreat center. The foundation was closed on July 12, 1994.

8 1963 BROTHER FREDERICK EHINGER died at the age of 77 at Holy Redeemer, Oakland, CA. Born in Springfield, IL, July 11, 1886; professed at Kansas City, MO, February 15, He spent most of his years as a Redemptorist in the Oakland Vice-Province. He could very aptly be called Mr. Holy Redeemer College as he built, repaired, and kept the college in Oakland going from the first day of its existence; he spent thirty-eight years there. A man of many talents, his spiritual life reflected a man at peace with his God. 55 years professed. Buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, in the Sacred Heart Section, Hayward, CA. (Near Oakland) 1996 REV. JAMES STEPHEN KELLY died at the age of 85 while stationed at St. Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. Born in Detroit, MI, December 17, 1910; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1932; ordained at Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, He studied at The Catholic University in Washington before teaching English and German at Kirkwood, MO. He served as a mission preacher, retreat director, and pastor. He inaugurated St. Gerard Parish in Kirkwood, MO, serving twice as pastor there. He was superior for a term at Edgerton, WI. He spent his last twenty active years at Liguori Mission House, Liguori, MO, mainly promoting the Liguorian magazine. He was a dedicated man with a strong personality which often served him well in organization and promotion work, but at times put him at odds with confreres. A prayerful person, he resignedly bore several years of suffering and hospitalizations before his death. 64 years professed; 59 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO. DECEMBER The Picture of Our Mother of Perpetual Help was ordered by Pope Pius IX to be transferred by the Augustinians to our Church on Via Merulana, Rome ST. GERARD MAJELLA is solemnly canonized by St. Pius X in Rome Christian Darley was named the first Redemptorist to be commissioned chaplain in World War I CLERICAL STUDENT WILLIAM DOOLAN died at the age of 21 at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Born in Stone Bank, WI, June 17, 1920; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, He lost his life in Lac La Belle attempting to save his companions who had fallen through the ice; they survived. 5 months professed. Moved in 1988 to St. Catherine s Parish Cemetery, Mapleton, WI CLERICAL STUDENT LEO DILLENBECK died at the age of 21 at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc WI. Born in Grand Rapids, MI, June 21, 1920; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, He followed his brother, Frederick, into the Congregation. He drowned at Lac La Belle when he tried to save Frater Doolan. 5 months professed. Originally buried in the cemetery at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Moved in 1988 to the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO REV. PHILIP AGGELER died at the age of 60 at Holy Redeemer, Oakland, CA. Born May 22, 1915 in Pilot Grove, MO; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1936; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, He taught for a short time at Oakland, CA, and then was on the mission band, serving mostly in California. He was pastor at Whittier, CA, where he oversaw the building of the new church, and pastor at Portland, OR, where he oversaw the construction of the gymnasium. He gave retreats out of Palisades Retreat House, WA, and Picture Rocks, AZ, and finally ended his days as a mission preacher out of Oakland, CA. 39 years professed; 35 years ordained. Buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, the Sacred Heart Section, Hayward, CA. (Near Oakland) DECEMBER MOST REV. GEORGE PHIMPHISAN was ordained bishop at Udon Thani, Thailand. He was appointed bishop by the Holy See on October 18, He succeeded Bishop Clarence Duhart, C.Ss.R., who had resigned the See. DECEMBER MOST REV. NICHOLAS MANSIONE died at the age of 82 at Pagani. Born at Polla, Salerno, Italy, August 1, 1741; professed in 1758; ordained in He was the fourth superior general and rector major ( ). DECEMBER REV. JAMES COLL died at the age of 57 at Holy Redeemer Parish, Detroit, MI. Born in Gearytown, PA, May 5, 1884; professed at Kansas City, MO, August 15, 1909; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc,

10 WI, July 2, He was a teacher in the minor seminary and a parish priest; he was an outstanding English scholar and fine writer. 32 years professed; 27 years ordained. Buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Detroit, MI REV. EDWARD FASTNER died at the age of 70 at St. Joseph s College, Edgerton. WI. Born in St. Paul, MN, January 7, 1894; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1916; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, May 29, He was a teacher in the minor seminary and rector in various communities for sixteen years. He gave missions in English, Spanish, and German equally well. Diabetes, late in life, led to impaired eyesight and the amputation of both legs. With all these physical problems, his faith and strength remained intact and he never lost his sense of humor. 49 years professed; 44 years ordained. Originally buried in the cemetery at St. Joseph s College, Edgerton, WI. Moved to the Redemptorist Cemetery, Glenview, IL REV. WILLIAM GRANGELL died at the age of 92 while stationed at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, New Orleans, LA. Born in New Orleans, LA, December 30, 1893; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1914; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2,1919. Throughout his long and fruitful life, he served in many capacities: parish priest, superior, missionary, Provincial Consultor, and General Consultor in Rome. He served in the Oakland Vice-Province as a mission preacher for a short time. He loved people and people loved him. He summed up his life this way, I have tried to practice two virtues in the Nth degree: cheerfulness and generosity. All the others are possible with these two as foundations. His last years were spent at the health care center at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, where he died. 72 years professed; 67 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Lacombe, LA. DECEMBER REV. HENRY OENNING died at the age of 66 while stationed at St. Alphonsus Parish, Chicago, IL. Born in Chicago, IL, December 26, 1889; professed at Kansas City, MO, August 15, 1909; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, He was rector at both St. Michael s Parish and St. Alphonsus Parish, Chicago, IL. He had been a teacher and socius in the minor seminary. He was quite capable of fulfilling any work entrusted to him. He disliked ostentation of any kind; he left a message before his death, Whenever and wherever I die, it is my wish that

11 there be no flowers and no sermon of any kind at my funeral. His wishes were observed. He died in St. Elizabeth s Hospital, Chicago, IL, after a lengthy stay. 47 years professed; 42 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Glenview, IL. DECEMBER REV. DANIEL MURPHY died at the age of 41 at Holy Redeemer Parish, Detroit, MI. Born in Detroit, MI, April 25, 1897; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1922; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 12, He was a parish priest all his life. He worked for a time among the Spanish speaking in San Antonio, TX. 16 years professed; 11 years ordained. Buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, Detroit, MI REV. THOMAS CONDON died at the age of 67 at Mount St. Clement s College, DeSoto, MO. Born in Toronto, IA, February 17, 1872; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 15, 1898; ordained at DeSoto, MO, June 19, He was a parish priest all his life and rector in Detroit, MI. He served as the first superior of Livermore, CA, in 1933, but he resigned because of poor health which forced him to retire to DeSoto, MO, in years professed; 36 years ordained. Originally buried in the cemetery at Mt. St. Clement s College, DeSoto, MO. Move the the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO. DECEMBER San Giuliano, Rome was made the mother house of the Congregation and the residence of Very Rev. Francis de Paola by Pope Pius VI. San Giuliano occupied part of the site of Villa Caserta, which became the generalate of the Congregation in REV. CHRISTIAN DARLEY died at the age of 68 at St. Joseph s Parish, Denver, CO. Born in Charlottesville, VA, November 13, 1885; professed at Kansas City, MO, August 15, 1905; ordained at St. Louis, MO, June 30, He was a convert to the faith and was influenced to join the Congregation from a mission given in Denver, CO. He was in the founding community at St. Gerard s, Great Falls, MT. He was a teacher in the minor seminary and an army chaplain in World War I. He served twice as rector in Denver, CO, and was especially effective in work among young people. 48 years professed; 43 years ordained. Buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Denver, CO.

Three professed students died: Patrick Brennan of the Toronto Province, Arthur Froehlich, and John Power. DECEMBER REV. JOSEPH CHAPOTON died at the age of 50 while stationed at Holy Redeemer Parish, Portland, OR. Born in Detroit, MI, October 3, 1875; professed at Kirkwood, MO, August 22, 1895; ordained at Kansas City, MO, July 25, He was the first priest ordained from Holy Redeemer Parish in Detroit, MI. He served primarily as a parish priest and mission preacher. He introduced the Holy Name Society in Seattle WA, and pioneered in this work in the Northwest. Known for his immense well of energy, he was always considered a consummate gentleman and thoughtful confrere. He had a strong devotion to the Infant Jesus and arranged for each house of the Province to receive a replica of St. Alphonsus' Bambino Gesu. He is supposed to have mastered thirteen languages sufficiently enough to hear confessions and even preach in several of them.
