Evening of Renewal Concert We are pleased to welcome renowned singer-songwriter Rory Cooney to St. Jude. On Friday, April 17, 2015 Cooney will present an Evening of Renewal Concert open to the public. On the morning of Saturday, April 18, he will facilitate a Change Our Hearts - Day of Reflection workshop for anyone in the diocese involved in music ministry. Save the Dates! Composer of a dozen recorded collections of liturgical music and published by Oregon Catholic Press, World Library Publications, and GIA Publications, Cooney s works are anthologized in most Catholic hymnals and missalettes utilized in prayer and praise across the United States, including those devoted to youth ministry. His works include Mass of St. Aidan, part of the World Library collection of Christ the Icon, which won the 2006 United Catholic Music & Video Association (UCMVA) Unity Award for Best Liturgical Song. He is the 2014 recipient of the Pastoral Musician of the Year award from the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. Rory Cooney has been the director of liturgy and music ministries at St. Anne Catholic Community in Barrington, Illinois, since 1994, previously serving for 11 years at St. Jerome Catholic Community in Phoenix, Arizona. His published compositions span a 35 year career of songwriting. He is married to musician Therese Donohoo. 2 FROM THE TEE BOX A Few Thoughts from Our Pastor Dear Friends: From the Tee Box! March 7-8, 2015 The Third Sunday of Lent As with many weeks of the year, please allow me to offer a quick recap of some of the happenings in our parish and then a brief reflection on this weekend s Gospel. (I am thankful to Fr. Mike for celebrating all of our Masses this weekend, as I am away for a little 4 day vacation.) First, we had another great turn-out this past Tuesday for evening Mass and our guest speaker, Dr. Tina Holland. My thanks once again to Dr. Holland for sharing her faith story with us. Second, we also continue to prepare for our annual parish fair. I know that we are so grateful to our entire fair committee and Charmaine (our Director of Ministries) for their hard work! And lastly, I had the privilege of facilitating a workshop last Saturday for a group of adults from throughout our diocese on the topic of boundaries when using social media in youth ministry. I look forward to sharing some of our conversation with you here in our parish. This weekend we come to a scene in John s Gospel with which I am sure we are all quite familiar. It is commonly referred to as the cleansing of the temple. People automatically think that the main reason Jesus was angry was due to the fact that the money changing was taking place in the temple. Surely, this was part of the cause for his anger, but there was also a deeper, underlying reason. Since pilgrims would travel a great distance to the temple, it was common to make certain provisions available for sale to them: food, water, and so on. This was a common practice. The real issue was that some of the money changers were cheating the pilgrims, shorting them on their change, if you will. Innocent, sincere people were being taken advantage of, and this was one of the reasons for Jesus anger. Can you really blame him? So, what could this say to us about our life together today? Well, to use the common image, we are all on a journey together pilgrims of faith. And as we go about our traveling, we are called to remember that we are all in this together. Along the way, we are called to greet and treat one another with compassion and honesty. Today more than ever, perhaps, we need to be reminded of this reality. Pope John Paul II, many years ago at the celebration of World Youth Day at Manila in the Philippines, made the statement that, as with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we are called to be traveling companions with one another, especially with our children. Perhaps consider how this Lenten season can be a time in which we let go of our petty differences and embrace one another more faithfully as friends on the journey. Sincerely, Fr. 3 Calling All Home Cooks!! Our home cooking booth has been a great success the past three years and we are again looking for some of St. Jude s Finest Chefs to help us with this year s fair on March 20-22, All Parishioners, especially those aspiring chefs, are encouraged to join us by preparing your favorite family recipes to share with friends and fellow Parishioners in our Home Cookin Booth. All meals should be prepared in advance of the fair weekend, packaged, frozen and delivered to the Home Cookin Booth located directly outside the school cafeteria on Friday March 20 th. Meals should be packaged in serving sized por ons, (i.e. 2, 4, 6 servings per container) and in containers that you are willing to part with (plas c or paper freezer containers, foil pans, etc.). 4 Fair Book Store The 2015 St. Jude Fair is this month and our book store needs your gently used books, cd s, dvd s and puzzles. Please save your donations for us. 5 All Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of St. Jude parish are invited to a Scout Recognition Service on Sunday, March 15 th at the 11:30 a.m. Mass. This is our annual special service featuring scouts as lectors, mass greeters, altar servers, gift bearers, flag bearers and usher assistants. All scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms and are requested to gather in the parish hall at 11:00 to prepare for the procession into Mass to reserved seating.
