THE THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT HOLY EUCHARIST December 17, :00 A.M. Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church reaching out through worship, prayer, and action to bring the reconciling peace of Christ to one another and this world. We invite you to join as an active participant in the worship of God. This service is based on the Order for the Holy Eucharist: Rite Two in the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). For ease of use, this leaflet contains the congregational portions of the liturgy and service music. HYMNAL refers to the blue book: The Hymnal ORGAN VOLUNTARY Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above Jeanne Demessieux All stand as able at the sound of the tower bell. HYMN (sung by all) On Jordan's bank HYMNAL 76 THE OPENING ACCLAMATION (BCP p. 355) Presiding Priest Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. COLLECT FOR PURITY Presiding Priest and People Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. TRISAGION (sung by all) after Alexander Archangelsky arr. by Richard Proulx Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Presiding Priest The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presiding Priest Let us pray. Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD THE FIRST READING (seated) Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 READER: A Reading from the Book of Isaiah The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. For I the Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. People Thanks be to God. Silence is marked by the ringing of a bell. THE RESPONSE (remain seated) Psalm 126 Cantor: Choir: All: 1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of / Zion, * then were we like \ those who dream. 2 Then was our mouth filled with / laughter, * and our tongue with \ shouts of joy. 3 Then they said among the / nations, * The Lord has done great \ things for them. 4 The Lord has done great / things for us, * and we are \ glad indeed. 5 Restore our fortunes, / O Lord, * like the watercourses of \ the Negev. 6 Those who / sowed with tears * will reap with \ songs of joy. Tone 2-2 -

THE SECOND READING I Thessalonians 5:16-24 READER: A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil. May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. People Thanks be to God. Silence is marked by the ringing of a bell. ALLELUIA VERSE (standing as able) Choir, then all and after the verse: Dent Davidson/Gabriel Fauré Cantor: The Spirit of the Lord is up/on me; * he has anointed me to preach good \ tidings to the poor. THE GOSPEL John 1:6-8, The Priest or Deacon reads the Gospel, first saying The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, I am not the Messiah. And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? He said, I am not. Are you the prophet? He answered, No. Then they said to him, Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? He said, I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet? John answered them, I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal. This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing. The Gospel of the Lord People Praise to you, Lord Christ. THE SERMON (seated) Silence is marked by the ringing of a bell. Karen Haig - 3 -

THE NICENE CREED (standing as able) Presiding Priest and People We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary; and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The people pray responsively In peace, we pray to you, Lord God. Silence For all people in their daily life and work; For our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who feel alone. For the just and proper use of your creation; For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression. For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble; For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy. For the peace and unity of the Church of God; For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth. For Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Gregory, our Bishop; Karen, our Rector; Dan, our Deacon; and Nancy, Judith and Patricia, our Assisting Priests; all who minister in Christ, and for all the holy people of God. For all who serve God in his Church. For the world and its leaders, especially Donald our President, Jay our Governor, our nation and its people. Lord, hear our prayer. For all those who go in harm s way to serve, both here at home and in lands far away, and for their families and loved ones who also serve as they wait for the time of reunion. For the time of peace on earth. For grace to welcome into our fellowship our sisters and brothers in Christ who are visiting, remembering that in welcoming strangers we may welcome angels unaware. For all to be gracious in hospitality

PRESENTATION ANTHEM (standing as able) Presiding Priest All things come from you, O Lord, People And of your own have we given you. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (Eucharistic Prayer B, BCP p. 367) The people remain standing. People Presiding Priest People Presiding Priest People The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Franz Schubert (continued on page 8) - 7 -

Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A The Presiding Priest continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Presiding Priest and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; The Presiding continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The Presiding Priest breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. ACCLAMATION AFTER THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Franz Schubert (continued on page 10) - 9 -

Thanks to all who have pledged for 2018! We are especially grateful to those who have increased their pledges in response to our 2018 budgetary needs. If you have not yet submitted your pledge, please prayerfully consider your 2018 financial contribution and make your pledge as soon as possible in December. We need to complete our 2018 Stewardship Campaign so that we can provide the Vestry the 2018 pledge income report. The budget that Vestry creates is based solely on pledged funds, not on plate offerings. For the Vestry to prepare the 2018 budget, they need a clear understanding of what our 2018 pledge income will be. Each individual pledge is vital for our parish to sustain itself and to do God s work in the world, and every single pledge matters. Stewardship packets were mailed to parishioners in October. If you did not receive one or misplaced yours, please pick one up in the church narthex or contact the church office. Please fill out the pledge form and return it to the office (by putting it in the plate on Sunday, by sending it in the mail or by hand delivering it to the office). You can also pledge online; the link is on the church s homepage at If you have questions, please feel free to contact Julie Houck (Bookkeeper), 206/ , jhouck@stbbi.org, Randy Krause (Stewardship Chair), 360/ , rklk@comcast.net or Reverend Karen (Rector), 206/ , revkaren@stbbi.org. The death of a beloved friend or family member, a divorce or job loss, an illness or frightening diagnosis or myriad other personal struggles can make this time of year particularly tender. The prominence of our culture s seasonal joy may be an unwelcome reminder of the void or heartache in our own lives. At St. Barnabas, we offer a special worship service A Quiet Christmas Holy Eucharist - for those who find themselves sad, grieving, or in need of any sort of healing during this Christmas season. This year, our Quiet Christmas service will be held on Thursday evening, December 21st at 7pm in the church. It will be led by our new rector, the Rev. Karen Haig. This service is open to everyone, and is especially meaningful for those who are experiencing loss. For more information, please contact Karen at revkaren@stbbi.org. KINGSTON FAMILY UPDATE Donna and Ric Cederwall have been helping a family in Kingston that receives food from the Kingston Food Bank. Here s an updated note from Donna & Ric: Angela s son, Tony, has gone from remedial studies to working at his 9 th grade level. Tony has worked very hard to accomplish his task and we are all so happy for his well-earned effort. To help Anthony stay up with his school work, we purchased the family a laptop, Microsoft Office for Students, with printer, supplies and extended warranty. The cost of doing this was $660 (we shopped to get a low price for a reliable system). To date, $195 has been received for this. We appreciate your help with donations

Currently the family has enough towels and kitchen articles donated by so many of you. We still need more chests and mattresses. Most important is a king mattress set for the parents. Angela and Anthony sleep in the basement. Their mattress sits on the cement floor. Angela said it is very cold in that area of the house. Their clothes are folded on the floor and there is no closet to hang anything. They share the area with the freezer and washer/dryer. If you have an area rug you may not want anymore, that could help warm up the space. The mattress set would be huge. For their clothes, a chest and possibly a mobile closet with a cover would be much appreciated. As mentioned before, this is all a work in progress and I believe at this point we have all made a huge difference for Angela s family. Thank you from our hearts to yours for helping with these requests. If you have any questions, please contact Donna and Ric at , or by at donna_cederwall@msn.com or ric@stanfordalumni.org EUCHARISTIC MINISTER LICENSE RENEWAL If you are a eucharistic minister for St. Barnabas, please check your license and let Kathy in the front office know of its expiration date. BARNABAS PRAYER CHAIN is a group of people devoted and committed to prayer, especially prayer for others. The Prayer Chain will pray for anyone who requests prayer or whose name is submitted by someone else for prayers. All the members honor confidentiality and do not discuss those for whom they pray. It is not necessary to have a lot of detail or even a name to pray for someone or a situation. Unless instructed otherwise, the chain usually prays for a person or situation for about two weeks. To contact the chain or if this ministry is something you would like to be part of, contact Drucy Burnet Hodge (drucy15@msn.com or 206/ ) or Kathy Irvin, Parish Administrator (kathy@stbbi.org or 206/ ). 17 Personal Rites for Advent A Take Home Sheet for Your Refrigerator Door Pay attention. That is the Advent message. Attentiveness to the mystery of the Coming One is not easily practiced in the midst of crowded calendars and unrelenting din of December. It is important to make time for paying attention, for silence, for waiting. Here are some suggestions: 1. Attend Sunday church service on all four Sundays. Throughout Advent, the liturgies tell us more and more about the future God is making... don t miss a single chapter of the unfolding drama as we wait for God together! 2. Follow the daily readings found in the Book of Common Prayer (BCP), or on line at You may want to use the forms provided in the BCP for home prayers. Compline is a lovely way to end the day you ll find it on page Create an Advent wreath on the first Sunday of Advent. Light the Advent candle when you say your prayers and sit down to supper. Use an Advent Calendar. Talk with family or friends about the season and the feelings it brings. Listen to the promise of God in each other. 4. Meditate on the O Antiphons. You may want to do this by candlelight, or in front of a fire. 5. Break habitual patterns. Cultivate surprise. See all things as new! Take an unusual route to work or use an alternative form of transportation. Do something you have never done before, or see something you have never seen before. Take a walk, letting colors, patterns and movements surprise you. Wear your watch on the wrong wrist, or don t wear it at all. Every time you look in the wrong place for the time, pray God to make you ready for the unexpected. 6. Practice waiting. Sit or lie by a window where you can see only the sky. Wait for something to pass by a cloud, a plane, a sparrow, an angel. 7. Climb a hill and watch for the moon to rise. Watch for the sunrise after the longest night (December 21). Watch for the first star on Christmas Eve. Wait without thought. 8. Keep the prayer Maranatha, come Lord Jesus in your mind and heart. Say it in various places. Empty your mind as you pray it. Watch for signs. 9. Make at least one conscious act of being a sign of God s future to others. Look to Matthew 25: for guidelines. 10. Make room for silence and inactivity. Schedule it. Put the television in a closet. Set aside one evening and do nothing not even books or music. Turn off the lights. Stop talking. Listen. Who is knocking at the door of your heart? Waiting is really a period of learning. The longer we wait, the more we hear about Him for whom we are waiting. As the advent weeks progress, we hear more and more about the beauty and splendor of the One who is to come. There is a stark beauty about it all Advent invites us into a growing inner stillness and joy allowing us to realize that He for whom we are waiting has already arrived and speaks to us in the silence of our hearts. Just as a mother feels her growing child in her womb, and is not surprised on the day of the birth and joyfully receives the one she learned to know during her waiting, so Jesus can be born in our lives slowly and steadily and be received as the one we learned to know while waiting.
