4 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD reading Isaiah 61:1 4, 8 11 The spirit Lord God is upon me, because Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to oppressed, to bind up brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives, and release to prisoners; to proclaim year Lord s favor, and day vengeance our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion to give m a garland instead ashes, oil gladness instead mourning, mantle praise instead a faint spirit. They will be called oaks righteousness, planting Lord, to display his glory. They shall build up ancient ruins, y shall raise up former devastations; y shall repair ruined cities, devastations many generations. For I Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give m ir recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with m. Their descendants shall be known among nations, and ir fspring among peoples; all who see m shall acknowledge that y are a people whom Lord has blessed. I will greatly rejoice in Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clod me with garments salvation, he has covered me with robe righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all nations. Reader Hear what Spirit is saying to God s people. Assembly Thanks be to God. 4

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not light, but he came to testify to light. This is testimony given by John when Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, I am not Messiah. And y asked him, What n? Are you Elijah? He said, I am not. Are you prophet? He answered, No. Then y said to him, Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? He said, I am voice one crying out in wilderness, Make straight way Lord, as prophet Isaiah said. Now y had been sent from Pharisees. They asked him, Why n are you baptizing if you are neir Messiah, nor Elijah, nor prophet? John answered m, I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie thong his sandal. This took place in Bethany across Jordan where John was baptizing. Deacon The Gospel Lord. Assembly Praise to you, Lord Christ. sermon The Very Reverend Steven L. Thomason 6

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, only Son God, eternally begotten Far, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one Being with Far. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by power Holy Spirit he became incarnate from Virgin Mary; and was made man. On third day he rose again in accordance with scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at right hand Far. He will come again in glory to judge living and dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in Holy Spirit, Lord, giver life, who proceeds from Far and Son. With Far and Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for forgiveness sins.
