March 17, 2013 LONG LIVE THE POPE I must admit that as I write this morning (Wednesday) I am somewhat distracted. Like almost everybody else in the world I am busy watching the smokestack at the Vatican and hoping to see that wonderful white smoke billowing into the Roman sky. As much as I would like the new pope to be elected as soon as possible, I m sort of hoping that it will be tomorrow and not today. The reason is that I am going to Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead to hear confessions precisely at the time there could be the joyful announcement of the election of the Successor of St. Peter. The drama, the anticipation and the excitement all has me hooked. The moment the white smoke appears and the bells of the Vatican begin to ring out the joyous news, I always get a tremendous feeling of pride and happiness in being a Catholic and a priest. You will probably be equally excited as you witness the appearance of the new pope. When you and I see him for the first time as Supreme Roman Pontiff, we will not be seeing Cardinal So and So, but we will be seeing Peter. Those of you who read this column with any regularity know that I am critical of the media and often think that as an institution the media has a decided bias against the Catholic Church. From what I can see and read, the Church is, for all practical purposes, the only religious organization at which they have aimed their continual barbs and criticisms. The only other group that seems to suffer (and very infrequently at that) is the Church of Scientology. Other religions seem off limits or certainly do not have the same interest as does Catholicism. If your religion is not Catholic, you pretty much get a pass from the media. I think it is fair to say that some of the criticism and sensationalism stems from the fact that the Church is so large and centralized. It is also unfortunately true that many of the criticisms of the Church are the result of the failures and sins of the hierarchy, clergy and laity. The Church is made up of imperfect people. The beliefs of the Church, of course, are largely antithetical to the liberal agenda of the media. Nevertheless, the social teaching of the Catholic Church is progressive and is rooted in the dignity of the human person. The media generally has no problem with our social teaching except when it comes to issues of sexuality and human life. (continued)

Having said all that, however, in my opinion I honestly believe that in this special week of the history of the Church, we owe the media a tremendous debt of gratitude. The television networks have taken us to Rome and the commentators and reporters seem genuinely excited about what is to happen. You know the way I feel: Whether people are Catholic or not, everybody seems to know that the Pope is the Vicar of Jesus Christ on earth. They may disagree with his teachings and that of the Catholic Church. Nevertheless, in a certain way, they respect the Church for being unyielding in its fidelity to the message of Jesus. The respect may be grudging, but is respect. You have to give credit for that. So mark this down: This week Father McDonald praised the media in no uncertain terms. Several hours have elapsed since I began writing and now, thanks be to God, We have a Pope! Pope Francis is a Jesuit, an Argentinean and a man of deep faith and humility. May Our Lord and Our Blessed Mother watch over him and of the Church of which he is now the Shepherd. I am so happy! Long Live the Pope! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald On a personal note I want to thank you for your generous and enthusiastic response to my appeal for pledges to the Catholic Ministries of our Diocese. More than $21,000 has been pledged just last weekend. An additional $3,000 was given in one time gifts. Even before I spoke during Mass you had already contributed $63,000 to the CMA. This means that our new pledge total is about $84,000. In the name of all the people who need our help and the exceptional ministries of our Diocese, I express my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for your goodness to Christ and His Church. As we rejoice in the election of our Holy Father Francis, we have yet another cause for joy. Last Saturday at Amityville Sister Mary Pat Neylon was elected the Prioress of the Dominican Sisters. Sister has lived in our parish for some 16 years and has served as a lector at Mass. She has a long and distinguished history as a Dominican and will now have the opportunity to build up her Congregation as the Sisters continue their mission to preach by their lives the unsearchable riches of Christ. Congratulations to Sister Mary Pat and the Dominicans!

I honor of our new Pope we will sing the following as the Offeratory song at all Masses this weekend.

VIVA IL PAPA Bishop William Murphy and the Roman Catholic Church of Rockville Centre join the universal Church in rejoicing in the selection of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires as Pope. We give thanks to God for the gift of Pope Francis I, the 266 th successor of Saint Peter, the Vicar of Christ on earth. We join the Church in prayer for our new Holy Father as he begins his new ministry. Bishop Murphy asks all the faithful of the Diocese to join him and his brother bishops of this local Church in offering prayers of thanksgiving to the Lord for our new Holy Father. At the Cathedral of Saint Agnes and in all the other parishes of the Diocese, Bishop Murphy and his brother priests will celebrate Masses of Thanksgiving in union with the Pope when he offers Mass at Saint Peter s Basilica to mark the beginning of his pastoral ministry as Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, Vicar of Christ and Universal Shepherd of the Catholic Church.

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA By the time you are reading this we have a new Holy Father, Francis I chosen by the Holy Spirit to guide our Church in these times of renewal. We need to pray in earnest for our Pope as he will encounter hard times trying to bring all of us into an accord. So many Catholics now want to choose some of their beliefs that are according to their likes and leave out what they do not favor; it is called Cafeteria Catholicism, choose what you like and leave out the rest without realizing that Jesus told us He was the Truth, total truth, not some truth. And while we pray for our new Holy Father, let us pray for this marvelous Church of ours and that the fallen away Catholics would return to the practice of faith. One more week and we will be in the midst of Holy Week. We have two wonderful CDs to help you to meditate on the reality of Jesus great love for humanity, manifested in His Passion and Death on the Cross. The CD: Three Days That Changed the World by Fr. Hector Perez, brings us alongside Jesus and His intense, sorrowful, physical sufferings. We will be with Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, at the foot of the Cross. The True Meaning of Easter by Archbishop Fulton Sheen, is a wonderful combination of Scripture and commentary on the Passion of Christ along with Gregorian chant which will help us to gain a deeper understanding of what Easter means for our Faith. Many of you are giving away the CDs after listening to them and as a result, many are able to share wonderful testimonies. Please, keep up the good work, and share your own stories for the good of all! Toti Conforti Lord, protect our religious freedom and give us the courage to stand firm. St. Thomas More, patron of religious freedom pray for us. Please pray daily our Religious Freedom prayer. It is desperately needed. ACTION: Attend the next parish meeting on March 18th at 7:30 PM in Msgr. Kirwin Hall STATUS: Third trimester Abortion Bill #5438 was temporarily stopped-now gaining momentum again. 12 2013 Catholic Ministries Appeal Serving God by Serving Others Church of St. Aidan 2013 Goal: $173,000 Pledged: $ 63,211 # of Gifts: 330 Total After Appeal: $ 84,000 At St. Aidan s A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP WILLIAM MURPHY Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, When Jesus gathered His disciples to celebrate the Passover supper that would foreshadow his sacrificial death, he left them a great example of service when he tied a towel about his waist and washed the feet of the Apostles: As I have done for you, you should also do. His words of action challenge each of us to Serve God by Serving Others. During the Lenten Season, Jesus is our model and guide, our inspiration and hope. He calls us to pray, fast and give alms as rewards of being His disciples. The Catholic Ministries Appeal provides the means for our Church to serve more than 600,000 in our community each year. Your sacrificial generosity enables us to fulfill our mission of proclaiming the Gospel of salvation in word and deed here on Long Island. The Appeal supports our efforts in evangelization, liturgy and worship, youth and young adult ministry, and programs for the poor and disadvantaged through Catholic Charities and our Parish Outreach programs. It helps fund religious education programs while promoting vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. This Lent, I invite you to reflect on the words of Jesus and answer His call to emulate his humble and loving service, by supporting the ministries and programs of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Thank you for your continuing generosity in supporting the good works of our Church. May God bless you with many graces during this holy season of Lent. Every day try to worship Him at Mass, use some time to read Scripture and meditate on what you are reading, attend on Friday evenings the devotion to the Stations of the Cross at our parish, and many more ways to spend time with our Savior. We shall give Him some of our time; nothing is more worthwhile than to strengthen our relationship with our Lord. And then go to our Mother and stay with her at the foot of the Cross, she will help you to draw closer to Christ.
