2 BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass: part four As we are about to begin our look at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, it is important to remember two important facts. First, when the priest offers the Mass he does so in the person of Jesus Christ. What does this mean? It means that when you see a priest celebrate (offer) the Mass, it is Jesus himself once again offering this unending sacrifice. Secondly, when the Sacred Scriptures (readings) are proclaimed (read), it is God Himself who is speaking to His people and Christ, present in His Word, proclaiming the Gospel. These two facts show us how intimately involved God is in the Mass. The Mass is divided into two major parts. The first is called the Liturgy of the Word (First Reading, Psalm, Second Reading, Alleluia, Gospel, Homily, Creed and Petitions) and the second, The Liturgy of the Eucharist (Offering of the gifts, Offertory Prayer, Preface, Eucharistic Prayer, Our Father, Rite of Peace, Holy Communion, and Prayer after Communion). There are also two smaller parts: the Introductory Rites (Hymn, Greeting, Penitential Act, Kyrie, Gloria and Opening Prayer) and the Concluding Rites (Priests Greeting, Dismissal, Kissing of the Altar, and Hymn). What time is the Mass supposed to begin? Now, you might think that this is a trick question. Every Church has posted times of when the Mass is to start. Yet, if the priest were to start the Mass at the posted time he would be violating the first rubric (rule) of the Mass. You see, the first rubric that the priest is told to follow states: When the people are gathered, the Priest approaches the altar with the ministers while the Entrance Chant is sung. Notice again what the rubric states. It does not state: when some of the people are gathered, or even, when most of the people are gathered. The presumption is that all of the people are gathered. In every parish, if we were to faithfully follow this rubric, the priest would not begin the Mass until about twenty-five to thirty minutes after the scheduled start time. If the priest was to wait until every one got there, in other words - start the Mass late, people would complain loudly. Yet, many people don't mind coming late even though the Mass is the supreme act of worship of God by the Church. PAGE TWO True Compassion and Caring at the End of Life: The Life and Legacy of Rose Hawthorne The Blessed Sacrament Respect Life Committee will sponsor a talk, True Compassion and Caring at the End of Life: The Life and Legacy of Rose Hawthorne by Sr. Mary Joseph O.P. of the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne. The talk will take place on Wednesday, November 16th at 7:30 PM in the Blessed Sacrament School Auditorium, with refreshments to follow. Rose Hawthorne was the daughter of author Nathaniel Hawthorne and a convert to Catholicism. She became a wife and mother, and after her husband s death, founded the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne to care for the sick and dying. The Church declared Rose Hawthorne a Servant of God in 2003; and the cause for her canonization is officially under way. At a time when euthanasia advocates are pushing for the legalization of physician- assisted suicide, the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne stand in stark contrast to those who would kill, rather than care for patients in the last stages of life s journey. Please join us for this story of her courageous love and to learn more, on the reasons to oppose physician-assisted suicide. French Mass The next Mass, to be celebrated in the French language, will be held next Sunday, November 6th, at 1:30pm. First Friday - November 4th Our sense of worship informs the way we think about God and the way we act towards Him. To help us worship God, in the way He should be worshiped, next Friday, at 3pm and every First Friday, of the month, we will have prayers in Honor of the Divine Mercy and Benediction, at the conclusion of these prayers. Three o clock is the Hour of Divine Mercy, as told to Saint Faustina by Jesus, and recorded in her diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul. We will pray the Chaplet and Litany of Divine Mercy.
3 The Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Formed Do you find yourself wondering aimlessly on the internet? Of course you know that this type of behavior can cause you all sorts of problems. Well, we have a solution for you and a place you can go and learn about our precious Roman Catholic Faith and at the same time enjoy good movies, books and audio. I know it seems like a dream but it is true. The Archdiocese has given each parish a one year subscription to a website called: Formed. You can sign up for free and begin using its content right away. All you have to do is go to the website: Once you get to that website, you put in the Parish Code: WGFJ7N (the Parish Code is case sensitive so make sure the letters are all in caps). It will ask you to register as a user just so they can keep track of what programs are popular and which are not. They also have a number of choices in Spanish. Why not take a look and see what is available. Wisdom of the Saints Saint Charles Borromeo said: If we wish to make any progress in the service of God, we must begin every day of our life with new eagerness. We must keep ourselves in the presence of God, as much as possible, and have no other view or end in all our actions but the divine honor. If a tiny spark of God s love already burns within you, do not expose it to the wind, for it may get blown out Stay quiet with God. Do not spend your time in useless chatter Do not give yourself to others so completely that you have nothing left for yourself. Behold Jesus Christ crucified, who is the only foundation of our hope; He is our Mediator and Advocate; the victim and sacrifice for our sins. He is Goodness and Patience itself; His mercy is moved by the tears of sinners and He never refuses pardon and grace to those who ask it with a truly contrite and humbled heart. PAGE THREE Music Notes for this Weekend By John Wolfe, Organist and Music Director Prelude: Praeludium in G Minor, BuxWV 149/1 by Dietrich Buxtehude ( ) Opening Hymn: number 539 All Creatures of Our God and King Anthem: Be Still and Know that I am God by Michael Larkin (b.1951) Offertory Hymn: number 664 Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling Communion Hymn: number343 I Received the Living God Closing Hymn: number 28 Blessed By Your Sacrifice Postlude: Fugue in G Minor, BuxWV 149/2 by Dietrich Buxtehude ( ) Dietrich Buxtehude was an important progenitor of the Baroque era s Stylus Phantasticus, or fantastic style, which is characterized by its wild, over-the-top exuberance and caprice. In this Praeludium and many similar free organ compositions, Buxtehude strung together discrete segments that are unified in tonality but highly contrasting in affect, lending the whole a manic unpredictability. The opening is improvisational and capricious, with a rhetorical call to attention soon proceeding to spin off dazzling flourishes above a repeating, insistent bass line. This gives way to a mournful lament in four-voice counterpoint, followed in quick succession by the third section, a rapid, fiendish dance. The composer crowns his prelude with a fugue, in which strictly controlled writing once again gives way to a free display of virtuosity. The four selfcontained units in this piece congeal into a single composition by refracting off from one another as in a hall of mirrors. Paradoxically, the diversity among elements adds rather than detracts from our sense that this is a unified and cohesive musical work. The Music for All Saint Day: Prelude: Toccata in D Minor, BWV 565 by Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Opening Hymn: For All The Saints Offertory Hymn: number726 Blessed Feast of Blessed Martyrs Communion Hymn: number 616 Shall We Gather at the River Closing Hymn: Sing with All the Saints in Glory Postlude: Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565 By Johann Sebastian Bach ( )

In Memoriam PAGE FOUR Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And may perpetual light shine upon them. The following are those who were recently buried from Blessed Sacrament Church. May God strengthen their families in this time of trial. Eileen Tardibuono What Do I Do? This is, unfortunately, a question that we are being asked more and more, in relation to a person s ashes (cremains). Over the years, it has become more popular to have a person cremated after death. The reasons for this are varied. Yet, the one troubling aspect is that sometimes after the funeral, or after the cremation, the ashes (cremains) are then placed in a closet (basement, attic or on a mantel) at home. There is no doubt that it is hard to let a loved one go, but the ashes should be buried in a cemetery. There have been occasions when we are asked what to do with the ashes that have been in a closet, or attic, for many years. Recently, a couple purchased a house, in the area, and they found a person s ashes in the basement. I am sure that the previous owners did not intend to leave their loved one behind, but it can easily happen. Ask any funeral director and they will tell you that families have their loved ones cremated and then never come back to pick them up. When I say never, I mean never. To be honest with you, I just don't understand that type of behavior. The Catholic Church teaches that those who have died should be buried with dignity, whether it is a full body or ashes. You would never think of keeping a full dead body in your home, would you? Ashes are a full dead body just in another form. Bury them. Don t Forget Don t forget to turn you clock back one hour next Saturday night, November 5th, before you go to bed. Don't be late for Church next Sunday.

Why do we pray for the dead? Look to the Second Book of Maccabees 12:39-45 and the Second Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy 1:18. There is a rich tradition, from Jesus time and in the Church today, to pray for those who have died.
