The writg akathists contues day as part general composition an akolouthia, especially Slavic tradition, although not all are widely known nor translated beyond origal language. Most newer akathists are pastiche, that is, a generic form imitatg origal 6th century akathist which a particular sat's name is serted STEWARDSHIP: A Way Of Life From: Beg In Communion (III) All thgs are for your sakes, that grace, havg spread through many, may cause thanksgivg abound glory God. (2 Cor. 4:15) In this fal part Beg Communion I would like concentrate on communion as it relates Dive Liturgy. As persons communion, we come Dive Liturgy with gratitude for what God has given us. All that we have is a gift from God, ALL, not just some! We sometimes fall misconception that WE are responsible for what we have and what we have become. As persons communion, we know that God has given us everythg and we come praise Him gratitude for His gifts. Durg Dive Liturgy, we brg our gifts be fered Christ. Origally first fruits harvest were brought, oil, we, wheat, bread, fruits. What was not fered durg Liturgy was distributed poor, needy, widows and orphans. We approach chalice not as an dividual but as body Christ; we are communion with God and each member body Christ. As members body Christ and you made a covenant with God at your baptism become a member body Christ, you are committed journey Theosis, tal communion with God, as well as helpg ors on that journey fd ir 3

4 hypostatic prciple, ir personhood. We are all a constant state becomg: We are not yet what we shall be (1 John 3: 2). When not usg gifts that God has given us we fall out communion with God and each or. We put our salvation at risk as well as those who we do not assist. We fall back self-centeredness and beg rely on our rational md resolve all issues our lives fallg a deep sense loneless and alienation that marks modern human begs as stated by Fr. Stephen Freeman, Glory God for All Thgs. As Paul stated Galatians 2: 20, It is no longer I who live, but Christ me. Can you say that all honesty? When you can make that statement, you will be communion with God and with body Christ. You will be a good steward freely and lovgly givg your gifts gratitude for what God has given you! LIVING ORTHODOXY 4 To assist faithful makg most this holy season, additional resources have been added our Diocesan Website. The Ladder Dive Ascent Icon (excerpt from ) Jesus Christ s teachg is overwhelmg its simplicity. Rar than give us burdens, He tells us take up only one thg: our cross. Instead demandg many sacrifices, He desires from us only one thg: our lives. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and gospel will save it. (Mk 8: 34-36) Because such words are overwhelmg ir directness, Jesus Christ ordaed Apostles and teachers help guide us livg this simple God-centered life; much Epistles Bible are given over this subject. Jesus Christ did not sp appotg such people lead us after death Apostle John, and so addition Holy Scriptures re are many or treatises tended humbly guide us through snares and pitfalls this world and ward Salvation. One best known and well-loved is The Ladder Dive Ascent, written by St. John ~600 A.D. St John was abbot a monastery Sai, well known for his wisdom, but also a lover solitude; it was with much sistence from his fellow-monks that he fally wrote down his pearls wisdom a piece which was known as Ladder. There are numerous articles about this work, and how it spread throughout Orthodox monasteries world, and a number m are given lks below. The Icon Ladder developed wilderness regions Egypt, from monasteries that would have, and still do, have readgs from work all through. The ladder icon usually has 30 rungs, number chapters St John s work. Upon ladder are people at various stages ascent. At first glance those on ladder may seem similar, all beg bearded men, but this must be seen context. The Dive Ladder was prcipally a work written for monastics, and it is only relatively recently that greater numbers nonmonastics have become familiar with se writgs. As such, most older icons Ladder reflect prciple audience image monks and so show only men, and only bearded men at that. The icon does, however, show men differg ages, and usually cludes at least one man vested as a bishop. Moreover, no specific person is beg depicted, but stead a general type person. The implicit suggestion is that all Christians who struggle ward and desire Salvation are represented on Ladder Dive Ascent. The Ladder is shown cuttg through Icon, ascendg from botm left, p right, and separatg Heavenly from worldly. Around about Ladder are numerous pitchblack demons which are besettg those on ladders with arrows, spears, and chas. These are physical manifestations sful thoughts and temptations which beset us as we walk narrow path, or narrow ascent, ward Salvation. Some those beset with passions are shown fallg, and those that do are swallowed up by Hades, represented as a dark head; it is also sometimes shown as a monster s head, as Icons Last Judgment. To left, upper portion, misterg angels are shown tercedg for those on Ladder, and ready receive m when y reach Heaven. In some icons y are shown swoopg crown those who reach summit. In p-right is Jesus Christ

5 Himself, open-armed, receive all; those on Ladder, at every stage, have ir eyes fixed upon Christ. The only ones who don t, are those who are already fallg, though it is terestg note that all wher ascendg or fallg hold ir hands same pious, prayerful manner. In later icons, Hades is shown botm right, but older, Sai Icon it is not clear that Hades is beg shown all its lurid detail. It is likely that those botm-right are merely observg scene, and vitg us do same. In some Icons Church is explicitly shown at botm Ladder, usually with St John (shown with a halo) gesturg way those who have yet beg ir climb.
