Those wishing to be anointed should sit in any front pew with relatives or friends seated behind them in the second row. Fast and Abstinence for Vocations: Please offer prayers and your fast and abstinence sacrifice for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. This month we ask that you pray especially for: Joseph Heschmeyer, 2nd Year Theology, Pontifical North American College, Rome, and Quoc-Viet Nguyen, 2nd Year Theology, Mundelein Seminary. Donations of clothing help those in need Catholic Charities is in need of trendy and gently used clothing that children can be proud to wear to school this year (age range 3 to 16). This is a stressful time of year for many of the families that Catholic Charities serves and we want them to feel good about getting their children off to school. We are particularly in need of jeans, shorts, shirts, dresses, etc. Shoes, back packs, and lunch boxes would also be helpful. Thank you for supporting Catholic Charities and living out the call to mercy by helping to clothe the naked. VIRTUS Training The Archdiocese requires all adults who work and/or volunteer around children to complete VIRTUS training. You can attend a VIRTUS session anywhere in the Archdiocese. Several parishes have session scheduled for the beginning of August. St. Ann will be hosting a VIRTUS training session August 30 th, from 6-9 pm. Please visit virtusonline.org to register. Find out more details and register here: Saint Corner: St. John Vianney Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney, known as John in English, was born May 8, 1786 in Dardilly, France and was baptized the same day. He was the fourth of six children born to Matthieu and Marie Vianney. John was raised in a Catholic home and the family often helped the poor. n 1790, when the anticlerical Terror phase of the French Revolution forced priests to work in secrecy or face execution, young Vianney believed the priests were heroes. He joined his heroes as a priest August 12, 1815 in the Couvent des Minimes de Grenoble. His first Mass was celebrated the next day. Fr. John Vianney was appointed parish priest of the Ars parish. When he began his priestly duties, Fr. Vianney realized many were either ignorant or indifferent to religion as a result of the French Revolution. Many danced and drank on Sundays or worked in their fields. He preached against such behavior, and spent hours a day in the confessional. St. John Vianney would often say: "Private prayer is like straw scattered here and there: If you set it on fire, it makes a lot of little flames. But gather these straws into a bundle and light them, and you get a mighty fire, rising like a column into the sky; public prayer is like that." Page 6 St. Ann Catholic Church
