3 BAPTISMS Altar Frontal and all hangings are white. EXCEPTION: REGARDING BAPTISM ON PENTECOST Pentecost is now a designated baptism time. Pentecost takes precedence over baptism so RED, not white Altar Hangings will be used for baptisms that take place on Pentecost. 1. Bring the font stand from the back of the church and place it in the area near the center shelf, with the baptismal bowl in place. Remove the lid on Sunday morning. 2. On the baptismal shelf place: a. Small linen Credence Cloth with shells embroidered on it. b. Towel for each person to be baptized. These also have embroidered shells on them. c. Silver Ewer with warm water (Fill with warm water just before the service starts). d. Silver shell. Check with the Priest as some Priest use their hand and not the shell. e. Large Chrism container from the Aumbry (in robing room) the container is marked with SC (Sacred Chrism).* Check with the Priest as he may not want to use the Large Chrism container may only use the Votive Candle Holder. f. Pour a small amount of SC into a Votive Candle Holder and place beside the large Chrism container. g. A Baptismal Candle for each person to be baptized. (They are stored in individual boxes with the other candles. Take them out of the box. 3. The Pascal Candle should be placed at the aisle (to the right of shelf when facing Nave (back of Church). The Altar Guild is always responsible for lighting prior to the Service. 4. The hangings are white. 5. Reserve the first two pews on the pulpit side of the church for the immediate family and godparents. Reserved pew markers are in the top drawer in the robing room. 6. Use the white ropes to reserve the first two pews directly behind the baptismal font for other family members and friends. The white ropes are in the Electrical Closet in the back of the church (the same place the red ropes are stored). Notes: After the service the holy water remaining in the silver baptismal bowl should be poured down the Piscina. The silver shell should also be rinsed in the Piscina. If any Chrism Oil is left in the small candle holder after the service, it should be poured back into the Large Chrism container The linens should all be rinsed in the Piscina as they have touched either holy water or the sacred Chrism. 4 BAPTISMS Additional Information: *Oil of Chrism is a mixture of olive oil and balsam and is rubbed on the crown of the head. It is a sign of sealing with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. St. Alban s Chrism is kept in a glass cruet and marked SC for Sanctum Chrism. The oil is kept in the robing room Aumbry. The oils used for anointing are specially blessed for this purpose by the Bishop at the Chrism Mass on Maundy Thursday, so called because one of the oils used is called Chrism. 7 FUNERALS AND MEMORIAL SERVICES In General: The Altar Guild member(s) who will attend the funeral or memorial service can be of major assistance to the family and the clergy. Notes: The Altar Guild should check to be sure the responsible person has turned on the AC and the narthex, organ and church lights. The Questions and Answers regarding the details of the funeral or memorial service are at the end of this section. This is the form that hopefully the secretary or the clergy will fill in for Altar Guild preparation. 1. Altar Frontal and all hangings are white (even in Lent should such a service be held at that time.) 2. Only two flower arrangements to fit the silver vases behind the Altar are permitted unless a request is made to the Priest for an arrangement in front of the cross. Extra flowers should be placed in the Narthex. The flowers should go with the casket to the cemetery. The family will let you know if this is not the case. a. If the funeral is on Saturday, the family can use the regular Sunday Altar flowers (delivered on Friday) or they may order their own flowers. b. If the regular Sunday Altar flowers are used, they will remain on the Altar. c. If the family orders their own flowers and it is a Saturday service check to see if the flowers are to be used on Sunday. d. If the Altar flowers are to be taken to the reception the Altar Guild and the family will decide how to handle the altar flowers for the reception. The Altar Guild would be the ones actually removing the flowers from the silver vases and placing them in vases provided by the family. There are extra vases in the closet by the elevator in case the family forgets. e. If the service is on a weekday the family will need to make arrangements for their disposal. f. Additional flowers will be put in the Narthex and the family can either arrange for their use at the reception or dispose of as they wish. g. If the family orders their own flowers, we ask them to order them from Pink Posey Florist ( ) as they are familiar with the size of our flower vases but any florist who makes the two arrangements to fit the silver vases may be used. 3. Altar Candles should be checked to make sure that they are full enough to last through the service and changed if necessary. Note: If there will not be a Eucharist, the Altar Candles ARE NOT used. Remove them from the Altar and put them in the Sacristy. 4. Light the candles on the table behind the Altar. Use new candles. 5. The Pascal Candle is placed (when facing Altar) on the Gospel side (left side) of the casket or cremains table when there are cremains. If there are no cremains or only a picture on the October 2013 Section III Page 1 of 5 Revised February 2016

8 FUNERALS AND MEMORIAL SERVICES cremains table, the Pascal Candle is placed on the Gospel side of the Altar. This is the same position as it is for Easter (inside the Altar rail). Please check with the Priest. a. The Altar Guild is always responsible for lighting this candle prior to the service even if there is a procession. b. Check the oil in the candle and replace if necessary. 6. Torches should be hanging behind the Altar if there is a casket. Note: If there will not be a Eucharist the torches are not used. Also, if there is no casket or cremains the torches are not used and are left in the Sacristy. Check with the Priest. 7. If there are cremains or only a picture, the Back Table is brought to the front of the church and placed just outside the Altar rail. The torches are hung on the back table. a. CHECK with Fr. Jeff each time if no communion, he may not want the torches. b. If a family member or an usher will be carrying the cruet of wine and the ciborium to the Altar see 12 a. and b. 8. The Pall for the casket and covers for the table and the cremains are hanging on the rods in the Sacristy. There is a new, special credence cloth for the back table to be used under the cremains. It is in the bottom drawer in the robing room where the other white Altar hangings are kept. 9. The Gospel Book and the Bible are used for the service even if there is no casket or cremains. The Altar Guild member should place the Gospel Book on the Gospel side of the Altar (left side when facing the Altar). 10. If there is Communion, the set up will be the same as for a Sunday Service. Use the Ciborium for the wafers. If it is a very small funeral with communion use the breadbox. 11. The Credence Table is set with all the communion elements (same as a Sunday service) If the wine and wafers are not going to be carried up to the Altar they are also set on the Credence Table. a. If the back table is used for the cremains and a family member or usher is going to carry the cruet of wine and ciborium to the Altar, put them on the side shelf in the back of the church (next to where the back table usually sits). b. There is a small cloth that fits this shelf. It is rolled up and kept in the drawer with the baptismal linen. 12. Reserve the first two pews on the Gospel side (left side when facing Altar) for the family. Reserved pew markers are in the top drawer in the robing room. a. Depending on the number of family members attending it may be necessary to reserve more than the first two pews (check with the Priest or the secretary). i. If additional pews need to be reserved, use the red ropes that are hanging in the electrical closet in the back of the church (these are the red ropes we use for the Choir on Sunday) to reserve the first two pews on the lectern side. b. Put tissues in the pews reserved for the family. October 2013 Section III Page 2 of 5 Revised February 2016

9 FUNERALS AND MEMORIAL SERVICES 13. Prior to the service the attending Altar Guild Member will light all candles and torches if an acolyte is not present. a. The candle on the left side (facing the Altar nearest the pulpit) is the gospel candle and NEVER stands alone. Therefore, it should never be lighted first or left lighted by itself.. So we light from right to left, and extinguish from left to right. b. Use new candles. 14. If there is a casket, place the Pall on the back pew. Please make sure that it is pressed if necessary. a. The Altar Guild is responsible for covering casket. The feet in a casket face the altar so the off center cross on the cover is at the head end, facing congregation and the cross is over the heart. Please check with the funeral director to be sure which way the casket is coming in (head first?) so that we know which way to put the pall on. b. If there are flowers on the casket the Altar Guild is responsible for removing them while the casket is in the Narthex and covering it with the Pall. Flowers are not permitted on the casket during the service. c. After the service the Altar Guild is responsible for removal of the Pall in the Narthex and replacing it with the flowers. d. The casket should be positioned approximately 6 inches back from the altar rail so that the crucifer, priest, and LEMS can move around it during the procession and at the passing of the peace. 15. The bowl from the new font (Fr. Jeff prefers this font) that is used for baptism, the aspergillum and the small glass pitcher will be set on the counter in the Sacristy (see picture). On the day of the service, Fr. Jeff will bless water in this bowl and in the small glass pitcher prior to start of service. Fill the aspergillum with the water from the pitcher and pour any water left in the pitcher into the bowl from the new font. (The aspergillum is kept in the silver bowl when not being used). The glass pitcher is kept in a small box that is in the silver bowl or next to it. a. The bowl with the remainder of the water will be placed into the baptismal font stand at the back of the church for those who wish to bless themselves as they come into the Nave. b. Fr. Jeff or the Altar Guild member will put the aspergillum behind the cremains that have been placed on the table and covered with the pall. c. If there is a casket, the aspergillum is placed on the credence table with the communion elements. NOTE: Check with the Priest as this is subject to change. 16. Set out Sanctus bells and bell book they may or may not be used. 17. If interment is in the Memorial Grove, take the Memorial Grove shovel (see picture below).to the Memorial Grove and place the shovel next to where the ashes will be buried. The shovel is kept in the Robing Room next to the processional crosses. October 2013 Section III Page 3 of 5 Revised February 2016

10 FUNERALS AND MEMORIAL SERVICES a. If it will be a private interment, be sure extra service leaflets are left on the table in the Narthex for the interment. 18. Place a glass of water where Fr. Jeff sits, for any other clergy assisting and at the pulpit. 19. Straighten up Narthex remove clutter and easels with large announcements. 20. In the Narthex, move the Guest Book stand in front of the bookcase closest to the bulletin table (see picture on last page of the funeral section). 21. Put a wicker basket on the shelf of the Guest Book table located in the Narthex for cards or donations. 22. Check the family room (located at the top of the stairs to the left). Open the door to air out the room, check the box of tissues and place a pitcher of water and some glasses on the table. If possible, place a plant in the room (see pictures). a. If needed the library can be used for the overflow. 23. Check that the microphone is on. If not, the key is located in the top left hand side of the drawer in the robing room. a. Unlock the door to the PA system and flip the RED switch on the bottom left hand side when facing the PA system to on. A red light should come on. If it does not, PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ANY OTHER SWITCH ON THE PA SYSTEM. Fr. Jeff said if the red light does not come on there is something wrong with the system and technical assistance is needed. Touching other switches can create more problems. b. Leave the key in the door the appropriate people will know the PA system is on. REMIND THE PRIEST TO USE MICROPHONES OUTSIDE IN THE MEMORIAL GROVE 24. Doors the Family uses to enter the church (doors by the entrance to the Sacristy) Fr. Jeff didn't want them left open so if we opened them just before the family came through or as they were coming through, it would show respect for the family if we/ushers held them open. If the Altar Guild opens them that would definitely require that we have two Altar Guild members there. a. Check with Father Jeff if he or the Altar Guild will lead the family through the cloak room doors to their reserved pews. 25. Before the service open the side door for wheel chairs as it is closer to the handicapped pews. 26. If there are not any Ushers or Greeters, the Altar Guild will perform these duties. October 2013 Section III Page 4 of 5 Revised February 2016

11 FUNERALS AND MEMORIAL SERVICES 27. Ask the Ushers to check with wheelchair users and individuals with disabilities if they would prefer having communion brought to them in the pew. Additional Information: Oil of Intinction/Oil of Unction (aka Last Rites - i.e. final anointing). There is no balsam in this oil. This is one and the same oil. It is olive oil that has been blessed. Oil of Intinction is administered to the sick. Oil of Intinction is specifically intended for healing the sick. By which God s grace is given for the healing of spirit, mind, and body. When it is used to anoint a person near death, it is the Oil of Unction (often called Extreme Unction. Unction can be done with oil or simply by laying on of hands. The oil is kept in a small glass cruet and marked OI and is stored in the robing room Aumbrey. A priest may bless this oil if none is available that has been blessed by the Bishop. The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick or a person near death is administered for the following purposes: the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church; the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure, in a Christian manner, the sufferings of illness or old age; the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of penance; the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul; the preparation for passing over to eternal life. An aspergillum (less commonly, aspergilium or aspergil) is a liturgical implement used to sprinkle holy water. It comes in two common forms: a brush that is dipped in the water and shaken, and a perforated ball at the end of a short handle. Some have sponges or internal reservoirs that dispense holy water when shaken, while others must periodically be dipped in an aspersorium (holy water bucket, known to art historians as a situla). The aspergillum at St. Alban s is a perforated ball with a reservoir in the handle. An aspergillum is used in the Rite of Baptism and during the Easter Season. In addition, a priest will use the aspergillum to bless the candles during candlemas services and the palms during Palm Sunday Mass. If a coffin or ashes are present, the priest will sprinkle holy water on the coffin or the urn. The aspergillum can be used in other manners where sprinkling of holy water is appropriate, as in a house blessing, in which the priest might bless the entry to the home. The name derives from the Latin verb aspergere 'to sprinkle'. Note: At present, St. Alban s only uses the aspergillum at funerals. October 2013 Section III Page 5 of 5 Revised February 2016

47 THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY St. Alban s Altar Guild Manual The Epiphany is sometimes called Twelfth Day because it comes twelve days after Christmas, on January sixth (the first Sunday after Epiphany). The feast celebrates the manifestation of God in the form of human flesh through Jesus Christ, his Son. The word epiphany means manifestation or revelation" and is commonly linked in Western Christianity with the visit of the wise men (Magi) to the Christ child Through the Magi, Christ revealed himself to the gentiles. The following statement is from A Dictionary of the Episcopal Church.. Epiphany commemorates the manifestation of Christ by a star to the Gentiles. In Eastern Christianity, Epiphany puts emphasis on the baptism of Jesus by John, with Christ revealing himself to the world as God's own Son. 194 BISHOP S VISIT WITH THE HOLY EUCHARIST, BAPTISM AND CONFIRMATION The Rt. Rev. Shannon Johnston visited St. Alban s on June 214, A special 2:00 pm Holy Eucharist with Holy Baptism, Confirmation, and Reception was performed by the Bishop. Altar Frontal and all hangings are white. Setting: Silver Regular Sunday Eucharist Setting with Bread and Wine on Back Table (use the regular cruets) See Section III, Tab A Baptism for reference. Note: For this service there is a special set-up. The Bishop may or may not want a chair that would be set in front of the Altar. The Priest will decide on how he wants the set up for this service and if a specific chair will be used. Fr. Jeff supplied the chair in In 2015 the Bishop did not want a chair and instead used the Bishop s seat. White tablecloths were used to cover the small tables used for the baptismal elements and the books for the individuals being confirmed or received. There is a small white box in the top middle drawer in the Sacristy with the pins used to wrap the tables. Pictures of the special set-up for this service are attached You will need the answers to the following questions when setting for this service: How many individuals will be baptized, how many will be confirmed and how many will be received? This information will help determine how many pews will need to be reserved. Approximately how many people will be receiving communion? Note: Be sure the person assisting the Bishop knows that the glass of water for the Bishop is on the lower shelf of the back (flower) table (left hand side when facing the Altar).
