6 Praying the Rosary with This Book At its best, art evokes wonder in the heart of the viewer. Perhaps that wonder is born of surprise, the discovery of unexpected horizons that reveal the world to be a bigger place than we previously believed. Or perhaps that wonder is born of recognition, a resonance with some truth that we have known deep in the depths of our hearts but have been unable to express; and now, here it is, moving us to exclaim: Yes, it is like this! Sacred art, if it achieves its purpose, does all of this, and something more: it makes accessible to the senses the truth and beauty of the Divine. Whether by surprise or recognition, sacred art evokes not only wonder, but awe and reverence as well, for in the art we find a window, and in the window, a glimpse of the Divine. The power of sacred art to open up new possibilities in our relationship with Christ makes it a useful aid for meditating on the mysteries of the rosary, and that is the essential purpose of The Illuminated Rosary series, of which this book, The Joyful Mysteries, is the first installment. In these pages, you will find sacred art illustrating each of the joyful mysteries of the rosary: one image for each Our Father and Hail Mary, for a total of eleven artworks per mystery. As you pray the joyful mysteries, the images will not only help you track your progress, but aid your meditation on the mysteries as well. You may find some pieces are not to your personal taste. That is natural, and maybe even a good thing; even the best sacred artwork offers only partial insight into the Divine, after all. But to get the most out of your meditation, try viewing these images sympathetically. Let the vision of the artist challenge you: Why would the artist paint the mystery in this way? What does it reveal to the artist and others who have appreciated it? Praying The Illuminated Rosary with children and teens If all of this sounds a little too high-minded, it might help to know that the idea for this book began with children in mind. We thought our youngest children might like to look at pictures of the mysteries while praying the rosary with their families. Truth be told, we would have been happy if the art did nothing more than keep them from whipping the rosary beads around, but we were delighted to find that they really attended to the 6 The Illuminated Rosary
7 pictures maybe because they make the mysteries more real than all our words ever could. Some parents have expressed concern that these images are too complex for young children. It is true that many of the pieces in these pages are highly symbolic, best appreciated with an understanding of the cultural context and intent of the artist, not to mention the religious truths being conveyed. For this reason, parents ought to have an age-appropriate discussion of the art with their children. You will find resources to begin exploring the art in this book at pbgrace.com/rosary. Having said that, our experience has been that young children find ways to appreciate even the most sophisticated art at their own level, sometimes even making observations that teach their elders to see things in a new light. Following are some practical suggestions for praying The Illuminated Rosary with children and teens: Keep it short at first, saying one decade of the rosary at a time. Start by reading the brief description of the mystery at the beginning of the decade. Talk to your children about the mystery in your own words, perhaps pointing out details in the accompanying art to flesh out the mystery. Ask your children for their intentions for the decade, or use the suggested intentions following the introduction to the mystery. Pray the decade, turning the page before beginning each Hail Mary. Invite older children (ages seven to twelve) to lead the family rosary, using this book as an aid to saying (and memorizing) the prayers, and as a help to meditating on the mysteries. After praying the rosary, you might encouraging older children and teens to reflect on the meaning of the mysteries for their lives. How might the Holy Spirit have been at work in their hearts during their prayer? However you use The Illuminated Rosary, may praying with it lead you closer to the heart of Jesus through the heart of his mother; and may your own heart be filled with awe, reverence, and wonder. Jerry Windley-Daoust Mark Daoust The Illuminated Rosary 7
8 The Canticle of Mary (Magnificat) My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed; the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, and has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever. 8 The Illuminated Rosary

I believe in God the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. 10 The Illuminated Rosary

Wise men from far away learned of Jesus s birth, and brought him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And angels appeared to some shepherds watching over their sheep. Do not be afraid, one of the angels said. I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 102 The Finding in the Temple When Jesus was twelve years old, he traveled with Mary and Joseph to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. But when it was time to return home, Jesus stayed in Jerusalem, without telling his parents. Mary and Joseph searched for three days before finding him in the Temple, listening to the teachers and asking them questions. His mother said: Child, why have you treated us like this? We have been searching for you in great anxiety! Why were you searching for me? Jesus replied. Did you not know that I must be in my Father s house? 102 Then Jesus returned to Nazareth with his parents, where he grew in wisdom; and Mary treasured these things in her heart. Intentions For our family, and families everywhere; for teachers; and for all who search for Jesus, that they may find him....
