1 HOW TO PRAY THE ROSARY The Rosary is a Scripture-based prayer. It begins with the Apostles' Creed, which summarizes the great mysteries of the Catholic faith. The Our Father, which introduces each mystery, is from the Gospels. The first part of the Hail Mary is the angel's words announcing Christ's birth and Elizabeth's greeting to Mary. St. Pius V officially added the second part of the Hail Mary. The Mysteries of the Rosary center on the events of Christ's life. There are four sets of Mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and added by Pope John Paul II in 2002 the Luminous. The repetition in the Rosary is meant to lead one into restful and contemplative prayer related to each Mystery. The gentle repetition of the words helps us to enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ's spirit dwells. The Rosary can be said privately or with a group. The Five Joyful Mysteries are traditionally prayed on the Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays of Advent: 1. The Annunciation 2. The Visitation 3. The Nativity 4. The Presentation in the Temple 5. The Finding in the Temple The Five Sorrowful Mysteries are traditionally prayed on the Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays of Lent: 1. The Agony in the Garden 2. The Scourging at the Pillar 3. The Crowning with Thorns 4. The Carrying of the Cross 5. The Crucifixion and Death The Five Glorious Mysteries are traditionally prayed on the Wednesday and Sundays outside of Lent and Advent: 1. The Resurrection 2. The Ascension 3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit 4. The Assumption 5. The Coronation of Mary The Five Luminous Mysteries are traditionally prayed on Thursdays: 1. The Baptism of Christ in the Jordan 2. The Wedding Feast at Cana 3. Jesus' Proclamation of the Coming of the Kingdom of God 4. The Transfiguration 5. The Institution of the Eucharist

2 Praying the Rosary Familiarize yourself and/or your group with the prayers of the rosary. 1. Make the Sign of the Cross. 2. Holding the Crucifix, say the Apostles' Creed. 3. On the first bead, say an Our Father. 4. Say three Hail Mary s on each of the next three beads. 5. Say the Glory Be 6. For each of the five decades, announce the Mystery (perhaps followed by a brief reading from Scripture) then say the Our Father. 7. While fingering each of the ten beads of the decade, next say ten Hail Mary s while meditating on the Mystery. Then say a Glory Be. (After finishing each decade, some say the following prayer requested by the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of your mercy.) 8. After saying the five decades, say the Hail, Holy Queen, followed by this dialogue and prayer: V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: O God, whose Only Begotten Son, by his life, Death, and Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord 9. 3 Mary s Yes "Admire all God s works in the world, but be ready to fix your eyes on the things destined never to pass away. (John Paul II, VC 106) I was walking down Fifth Avenue recently, and I couldn t help but notice the stunningly gorgeous tulips staring at me. In an effort to make the concrete jungle in NYC beautiful, cherry and apple blossom trees line city blocks, lilacs drip down stone walls, patches of flower gardens are strewn down the islands of busy streets, and the aisles of sidewalks seem like the perfect place for carefully tended blooms. As I relished in the beauty of the tulips, I harkened back to a time when I saw a man get out of his black, tinted window SUV at a red light on Park Avenue and take pictures of sprightly red tulips before hopping back into his car as the light turned green. Everyone is captivated by beauty. As I delighted, however, my gaze turned to a few tulips near their end. I was tempted to feel sad as the flowers were flailing wide open with their petals just about dropping off. How fleeting is the glory of these delicate blooms! My sorrow at the perishing tulip changed when I realized how unreservedly they lived out their very existence to bear fruit while emitting a sweet fragrance and manifesting their beauty, a reflection of their Creator. Each of us is called to live with this reckless abandon, complete surrender to give without counting the cost, poured out like a libation. Perhaps, a dramatic spiritualization of this tulip However, when we live our lives with such unbounded generosity, totally given, in imitation of Christ Jesus Himself and with Him, only then do our lives bear fruit. And in this authentic and sincere gift of self, one discovers her deepest identity and manifests her beauty. In religious consecration, one seeks to make this perfect offering of love, this gift of self through the profession of religious vows. The religious offers herself (or himself) as a holocaust oblation to be wholly consumed. Given in this way, her love is spousal and redemptive. Any type of self-preservation or holding back thwarts the gift. This free and total giving bears fruit and spreads a fragrance that rises to heaven. Often we are afraid to give in a magnanimous way, to love without thinking of what we may miss out on. We are sometimes afraid of giving ourselves completely to Christ to transform our love. We may fear that we will lose our identity, gifts, talents, and all that makes life so good and beautiful. We cling to the things of this world, grasping for dear life. However, when this reckless, free fiat is given under the impulse of the Holy Spirit,

4 nothing is lost. Everything is new, deeper and rich with meaning and love and joy. We can make acts of generosity in our everyday lives in all that is entrusted to us. The little fiats prepare us and pave the way for great ones, leading us to our ultimate vocation. In the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict, I say to you, dear young people: Do not be afraid of Christ! He takes nothing away, and he gives you everything. When we give ourselves to him, we receive a hundredfold in return. Yes, open, open wide the doors to Christ and you will find true life. May the beauty and cosmic splendor of your yes rise up as fragrance to the Father and may the graces of this Easter season continue to take root in your hearts and bear great fruit. 6 Mary Undoer of Knots A favorite devotion of Pope Francis. I had discovered this devotion a few years before, and it quickly became one of my own favorites. The first time I prayer it was as a novena for a difficult knot in a relationship. After my nine days of prayer, I was amazed and grateful for how easily the knot of miscommunication was resolved. Learning that Pope Francis was instrumental in spreading this devotion from its native Germany to Argentina and now to the entire word solidified my fondness both for him and for this approach to prayer. Unlike devotions that are rooted in Marian apparitions such as Lourdes and Fatima, this one springs out of Mary s intercession in a troubled marriage. Faith Unties the Knot. While the illustration that normally accompanies the devotion shows Mary Untying the knots in the white wedding sash, I prefer to think in terms of a necklace chain. If you ve ever owned a necklace made of fine chain links, you know how easily it can knot and tangle. And you know how incredibly difficult it can be to try and pick apart those tangles. This is the image that sticks in my mind when I think about Mary Undoer of Knots. Sometimes the knots and tangles in our lives become so ensnarled that we begin to think it s hopeless even to try undoing them. The idea that we can bring these problems to Mary, asking her to carefully pick them apart and make the chain of our lives fit to wear again is one of the most comforting aspects of this devotion. Pope Francis has talked about this devotion and how Mary s faith unties the knot of sin. This idea alludes to Mary s role in salvation history. St. Irenaeus, writing in the second century put it this way; The knot of Eve s disobedience was untied by the obedience of Mary. What the virgin Eve bound by her unbelief, the Virgin Mary loosened by her faith. We too, can be bound by our own disobedience, Pope Francis explained. When we do not follow God s will for our lives, a kind of knot is created deep within us. These knots take away our peace and serenity. They are dangerous, since many knots can form a tangle which gets more and more painful and difficult to undo. What knot in your life is creating pain for you? Turn over your problem to Mary. 7 Mary Undoer of Knots Novena We all have some knots in our lives and Mary can untie them! The devotion to Mary, Undoer of Knots has become more popular ever since Pope Francis encouraged the devotion in Argentina, and then spoke about it during his first year as pontiff. by her faith. The theology of the devotion actually goes back to the second century. Saint Irenaeus wrote that, The knot of Eve s disobedience was untied by the obedience of Mary; what the virgin Eve bound by her unbelief, the Virgin Mary loosened Mary s faith unties the knot of sin! So we will pray that the Blessed Virgin Mary will intercede for us all, to untie the knots of sin in our lives so that we may be purified and ever closer to God.

17 Our Lady of Guadalupe - Guadalupe, Mexico (1531) Patroness of the Americas Feast Day in the USA - December 12th The opening of the New World brought with it both fortuneseekers and religious preachers desiring to convert the native populations to the Christian faith. One of the converts was a poor Aztec Indian named Juan Diego. On one of his trips to the chapel, Juan was walking through the Tepeyac hill country in central Mexico. Near Tepeyac Hill he encountered a beautiful woman surrounded by a ball of light as bright as the sun. Speaking in his native tongue, the beautiful lady identified herself: "My dear little son, I love you. I desire you to know who I am. I am the ever-virgin Mary, Mother of the true God who gives life and maintains its existence. He created all things. He is in all places. He is Lord of Heaven and Earth. I desire a church in this place where your people may experience my compassion. All those who sincerely ask my help in their work and in their sorrows will know my Mother's Heart in this place. Here I will see their tears; I will console them and they will be at peace. So run now to Tenochtitlan and tell the Bishop all that you have seen and heard." Juan, age 57, and who had never been to Tenochtitlan, nonetheless immediately responded to Mary's request. He went to the palace of the Bishop-elect Fray Juan de Zumarraga and requested to meet immediately with the bishop. The bishop's servants, who were suspicious of the rural peasant, kept him waiting for hours. The bishop-elect told Juan that he would consider the request of the Lady and told him he could visit him again if he so desired. Juan was disappointed by the bishop's response and felt himself unworthy to persuade someone as important as a bishop. He returned to the hill where he had first met Mary and found her there waiting for him. Imploring her to send someone else, she responded: "My little son, there are many I could send. But you are the one I have chosen." She then told him to return the next day to the bishop and repeat the request. On Sunday, after again waiting for hours, Juan met with the bishop who, on re-hearing his story, asked him to ask the Lady to provide a sign as a proof of who she was. Juan

18 dutifully returned to the hill and told Mary, who was again waiting for him there, of the bishop's request. Mary responded: "My little son, am I not your Mother? Do not fear. The Bishop shall have his sign. Come back to this place tomorrow. Only peace, my little son." Unfortunately, Juan was not able to return to the hill the next day. His uncle had become mortally ill and Juan stayed with him to care for him. After two days, with his uncle near death, Juan left his side to find a priest. Juan had to pass Tepeyac Hill to get to the priest. As he was passing, he found Mary waiting for him. She spoke: "Do not be distressed, my littlest son. Am I not here with you who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Your uncle will not die at this time. There is no reason for you to engage a priest, for his health is restored at this moment. He is quite well. Go to the top of the hill and cut the flowers that are growing there. Bring them then to me." While it was freezing on the hillside, Juan obeyed Mary's instructions and went to the top of the hill where he found a full bloom of Castilian roses. Removing his tilma, a poncho-like cape made of cactus fiber, he cut the roses and carried them back to Mary. She rearranged the roses and told him: "My little son, this is the sign I am sending to the Bishop. Tell him that with this sign I request his greatest efforts to complete the church I desire in this place. Show these flowers to no one else but the Bishop. You are my trusted ambassador. This time the Bishop will believe all you tell him." At the palace, Juan once again came before the bishop and several of his advisors. He told the bishop his story and opened the tilma letting the flowers fall out. But it wasn't the beautiful roses that caused the bishop and his advisors to fall to their knees; for there, on the tilma, was a picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary precisely as Juan had described her. The next day, after showing the Tilma at the Cathedral, Juan took the bishop to the spot where he first met Mary. He then returned to his village where he met his uncle who was completely cured. His uncle told him he had met a young woman, surrounded by a soft light, who told him that she had just sent his nephew to Tenochtitlan with a picture of herself. She told his uncle: "Call me and call my image Santa Maria de Guadalupe". It's believed that the word Guadalupe was actually a Spanish mis-translation of the local Aztec dialect. The word that Mary probably used was Coatlallope which means "one who treads on snakes"! Within six years of this apparition, six million Aztecs had

19 converted to Catholicism. The tilma shows Mary as the God-bearer - she is pregnant with her Divine Son. Since the time the tilma was first impressed with a picture of the Mother of God, it has been subject to a variety of environmental hazards including smoke from fires and candles, water from floods and torrential downpours and, in 1921, a bomb which was planted by anti-clerical forces on an altar under it. There was also a cast-iron cross next to the tilma and when the bomb exploded, the cross was twisted out of shape, the marble altar rail was heavily damaged and the tilma was...untouched! Indeed, no one was injured in the Church despite the damage that occurred to a large part of the altar structure. In 1977, the tilma was examined using infrared photography and digital enhancement techniques. Unlike any painting, the tilma shows no sketching or any sign of outline drawn to permit an artist to produce a painting. Further, the very method used to create the image is still unknown. The image is inexplicable in its longevity and method of production. It can be seen today in a large cathedral built to house up to ten thousand worshipers. 20 Marian Apparitions These are the nine major approved Marian apparitions of modern times, based on their acceptance by the Church and the importance they have assumed over time. (See, for example, the article "Apparitions" in Fr. Michael Carroll's Theotokos, A Theological Encyclopedia of the Blessed Virgin Mary, p.47). The Apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico Mary appeared four times to Juan Diego in 1531 at Tepeyac hill near Mexico City. She proclaimed herself the spiritual mother of all mankind and left her miraculous image on Juan Diego's outer garment, his tilma. To this day Mexicans have a great devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Apparitions at Rue du Bac, Paris, France Mary appeared to Catherine Labouré, in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, at Rue du Bac in Paris, three times in She showed her the design of the medal of the Immaculate Conception, the "Miraculous Medal." This medal, when propagated, helped to renew devotion to Our Lady, both in France and eventually around the world. The Apparition at La Salette, France Mary appeared to two children, Maximin Giraud, aged 11, and Mélanie Calvat, aged 14, in 1846, one afternoon while they were looking after the animals high up on the mountain. She appealed for penance and an end to Sabbath breaking and blasphemy in the region. This apparition is credited with a major revival of Catholicism in the area. The Apparitions at Lourdes, France Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, aged 14, a total of eighteen times at Lourdes in southern France, at the Grotto of Massabielle. She asked for penance and prayer for the conversion of sinners, and described herself as the "the Immaculate Conception." Lourdes is most famous for the miraculous spring which has been responsible for many cures accepted by the Church. The Apparition at Pontmain, France Mary appeared in the sky over the small town of Pontmain in north-western France to a group of young children for about three hours in January 1871, as the Franco-Prussian war was threatening the area. Her message appeared on a banner under her feet, and encouraged prayer while emphasising Jesus' love and concern. The village was spared invasion. The Apparition at Knock, Ireland Mary appeared at Knock, a small village in County Mayo, Ireland in August A number

21 of villagers of diverse ages saw a silent apparition, which lasted about three hours, outside the gable end of the local church. They saw three figures, Mary, Joseph, and St John the Apostle, as well as a lamb on an altar and angels. The Apparitions at Fatima, Portugal Three children, Lucia de Santos, aged 10, and her two cousins, Francisco Marto, aged 9, and Jacinta Marto, aged 7, saw Mary six times between May and October She described herself as "Our Lady of the Rosary," while urging prayer, and particularly the rosary, as well as penance for the conversion of sinners, and the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart. The Apparitions at Beauraing, Belgium Mary appeared thirty-three times to a group of children in the winter of at Beauraing in Belgium, in a convent garden near a hawthorn tree. She described herself as "the Immaculate Virgin" and "Mother of God, Queen of Heaven," while calling for prayer for the conversion of sinners. The Apparitions at Banneux, Belgium Mary appeared eight times to Mariette Beco, aged 11, outside the family home at Banneux, a small village, in Belgium. She described herself as the "Virgin of the Poor," and promised to intercede for the poor, the sick and the suffering. Prayer for Mothers Good and Gentle God, we pray in gratitude for our mothers and for all the women of theory who have joined with you in the wonder of bringing forth new life. You who became

Give them the strength to live and to be loved in return, not perfectly, but humanly. Give them the faithful support of husband, family and friends as they care for the physical and spiritual growth of their children. Give them joy and delight in their children to sustain them through the trials of motherhood. Most of all, give them the wisdom to turn to you for help when they need it most. Call me back from the darkness to my Father's house, give me a new heart and a place at Thy side in the banquet Thou hast prepared for me. Hail, Mary, my joy, my glory, my heart and my soul!
