2 Notes about Our Music for Advent, Christmas, and Winter Ordinary Time During Advent, the Gloria is not sung except on feasts such as Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Instruments that are appropriate for the Sacred Liturgy (such as flute, oboe, strings, and sometimes trumpet) are welcome to play parts on hymns - with the following provision during Advent: During the penitential season of Advent, the Church allows musical instruments to support the singing, but not to be played as solos. Because Advent is also characterized by joy and hope, we will express its character by continuing to have organ preludes and postludes, and organ/instrumental accompaniment. However, we will not continue our customary instrumental interludes at the Offertory and Communion. Instead we will prepare additional hymns or motets to be sung by one or more singers or the full choir until the offertory procession, incensing, and Communion procession are finished. Here are a few possible hymns, depending on how much time needs to be filled: #497 Creator of the Stars of Night ~20 seconds each verse #652 O Come, O Come Emmanuel ~40 seconds each verse #735 Rorate Caeli ~60 seconds each verse #428 Alma Redemptoris Mater ~60 seconds #442 Ave Maris Stella ~20 seconds each verse #681 or #682 or #683 O Salutaris ~25-30 seconds each verse Occasionally the singing may be finished early, inviting us to yield to a sacred silence, appropriate to Advent. We can enjoy this time of less instrumentation during Advent as an opportunity to sing more of the Church s treasury of chant. At Christmas we will return to fuller use of instrumentation, including instrumental interludes and solos, and this will continue through Ordinary Time. Reminder: If you are scheduled to sing or play a solo from your personal repertory, please submit your music at least two weeks in advance (earlier if possible) for coordination. We have several holy day Masses this season with combined choirs. We hope for all our singers to take part in singing on these holy days. Here are the plans: December 8 6pm Schola, please sing this Mass if you can. All Basilica singers are welcome. 11 Sacred Music News: Winter Dear Musicians of the Basilica, As we enter the new Church year, our musical contribution will set the tone of the celebration of the high seasons of Advent and Christmas at the Basilica. Below is an update on our music ministry and upcoming events. Christmas Caroling! As we did last year, we would like for parish groups to go caroling during the final days of Advent, and hand out flyers inviting people to our Christmas Masses. We have put together Christmas carol booklets for various Basilica groups to use. Our choirs will plan time(s) to go out and carol, but all parishioners are welcome to do this. Please coordinate with Maria to get the booklets and flyers if you would like to participate. Our adult choirs are planning to go caroling at the Chattanooga Convention Center on Saturday, December 23 at 1pm, and our Jubilate Deo Youth Schola are planning to sing at Alexian Village on Wednesday, December 20 at 3pm. Spread the good news of the Incarnation! Share the beauty of the Basilica by singing together for others! Winter Piano Recital Saturday, December 9 at 2:00 pm Students of our St. Cecilia Classroom will give their Winter Piano Recital at 2am on Sat., December 9in Varallo Parish Hall. All parishioners are invited. Busy Schedules Ahead, and Practice Times With many holy days to be celebrated in the coming weeks, as well as our own personal commitments, managing schedules will be a challenge. We will try to keep cantor/soloist practice connected to the times we will already be meeting for choir rehearsal, Mass, etc., instead of scheduling extra individual sessions. Here are reminders of our usual practice times: For the 5:30 Saturday Vigil Mass, cantor practice begins between 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm to allow enough time to practice. Practice after 5:00 pm in the church should be done quietly, as confessions are being heard. For the 9:00 Sunday Mass, the rehearsal for choir, cantor, and instrumentalists begins at 8:00 am on Sunday. There are also Tuesday evening choir rehearsals scheduled by Debi Crabtree. Regular practice for cantors and vocal/instrumental soloists for the 11:30 Mass and other Masses sung by the Gloria Dei Schola is at 6:15 pm on Thursdays (or 15 minutes before the scheduled choir rehearsal). Instrumentalists, please bring your instruments to choir practice if we will be rehearsing something you are playing on. Please submit any solo music you are doing as soon as possible (at least two weeks ahead of time) to allow sufficient time for Andrea or others to prepare it before rehearsing with you, to ensure you have approval, and so that we can include the information in the bulletin or program.
