1 Anglican Roman Catholic Diocese of Archdiocese Qu Appelle of Regina Anglican Roman Catholic Covenant Implementation Committee From the ARCCIC Co-Chairs Advent 2014 Dear friends, We have replaced our previous letter from the co-chairs with a newsletter, which we hope you will find informative and helpful, as together we live the covenant between Anglicans and Roman Catholics in southern Saskatchewan. In this newsletter, we provide our annual update of corresponding parishes and clergy in the Diocese of Qu Appelle and the Archdiocese of Regina. We encourage parishes to make contact with each other, exchange delegations at Sunday Eucharists, and undertake joint activities. Examples are given elsewhere in the newsletter. In 2015, we expect to arrange a workshop on First Nations ministry and to repeat the popular workshop for readers/lectors. The 2015 joint Prayer Service is planned for the afternoon of Pentecost Sunday, May 24. Details will be sent to parishes well in advance. We wish you every blessing in this Advent season of (Canon) Michael Jackson Susan Klein ARCCIC members: Susan Klein, Archdiocese of Regina; the Rev. Canon Michael Jackson, St. Paul s Cathedral; Father Rick Krofchek, St. Joseph, Moose Jaw; Susan Rollins, All Saints (Anglican), Lumsden; the Rev. Canon Catherine Harper, St. Michael s Retreat Centre; and the Rev. Dr. John Meehan, Campion College. "May they be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they be one in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me." 2 ARCCIC NEWSLETTER ANG/RC COVENANT IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE Dec 2014 Diocese of Qu Appelle Archdiocese of Regina On January 23, 2011, in St. Paul s Cathedral, Regina, Bishop Gregory Kerr-Wilson and Archbishop Daniel Bohan signed the Covenant between the Diocese of Qu Appelle and the Archdiocese of Regina, assisted by Deacon Susan Page and Deacon Joe Lang. Qu Appelle-Regina Covenant on International Website The covenant between the Archdiocese of Regina and the Diocese of Qu Appelle can now be found on the website of the International Anglican-Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission (IARCCUM). Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby launched the website during his June 16, 2014, visit to Pope Francis in Rome. See: Robert Hardwick was ordained bishop for the Diocese of Qu Appelle on March 2, 2013, in a ceremony at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Regina another example of the covenant in action. Bishop Hardwick was the preacher at the third annual joint prayer service, also held at Holy Trinity, on May 19, Let s do as much as we can together 2
3 Two Bishops of Saskatoon: on May 9, 2014, Most Rev. Donald Bolen, Roman Catholic Bishop of Saskatoon (right), was made an honorary fellow of the Anglican University College of Emmanuel and St. Chad, Saskatoon. Here he is seen with his Anglican counterpart, Right Rev. David Irving. Bishop Bolen was prime architect of the 2011 covenant between the Archdiocese of Regina and the Diocese of Qu Appelle and was preacher at the second joint prayer service, held in 2012 at St. Paul s Cathedral. The 2014 joint Prayer Service on Pentecost Sunday, June 8, at St. Paul s Cathedral: from left to right, S Susan Klein, ARCCIC co-chair; Rev. Dr. John Meehan and Fr. Rick Krofchek, ARCCIC members; and Archbishop Emeritus James Weisgerber, preacher at the service. Let us know what/how you are doing. We will place your article into the newsletter. Please include photos. 4 . Ecumenical Bible school a success Regina - All Saints Anglican and St. Martin s Roman Catholic parishes host a vacation bible school for children. Rev. Trish McCarthy and Alison Sander evolved a plan to invite Cross Talk Ministries to present the program. Rev. Trish says one of the ecumenical ideas is that you do what you can do together. Alison says We all believe in the same God, the same Jesus Christ and make it fun. The school attracted 16 children. For the full story see enical-summer-bible-vacation-school The May 10 th, 2014 workshop entitled Faith, What it is and how to share it was co-hosted by the RC Archdiocese of Regina Ecumenical Commission and the Anglican Roman Catholic Covenant Implementation Committee. It was held at Holy Rosary Cathedral, Regina. Keynote presenter Anglican Archdeacon Kim Salo spoke to us about core Christian beliefs, that we have the same faith as the apostles, telling us that the world needs what we have. He also talked about the meaning of covenant binding us together, to God, for the sake of the other, and in doing so, finding a new identity more fully than in doing something alone. He was speaking of our individual covenant with God, but I think his words could just as easily describe the Anglican Roman Catholic covenant. The other presenters Brett Salkeld, Pierre O Reilly and Michelle Braden, spoke on being examples, authentic, sacrificial, spiritual, a loving community. All of these attributes apply to our covenant as well as we step out in faith, one toward the other. 4
5 Deacons Deacons are, with bishops and priests, one of the three historic orders of ordained ministers, going back to the first centuries of the Christian Church. The diaconate is primarily a ministry of service. Deacons assist priests in their parishes, do outreach, enable lay ministry, and have specific roles in liturgies. During the mediaeval period, however, the diaconate became a period of preparation for the priesthood, and to this day those to be ordained priests spend a year or a few months in what is called the transitional diaconate. Since the late twentieth century both the Roman Catholic and the Anglican Churches have restored the vocational diaconate as a permanent form of ordained ministry, usually non-stipendiary, that is, for people who earn their living outside the Church. The Anglican Communion was very much influenced by the Second Vatican Council and the restoration of the permanent diaconate in the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Paul VI. The Diocese of Qu Appelle has been ordaining vocational deacons since the 1970s. In 2014, there were eight deacons: Arleen Champion in Moose Jaw, Luanne Hrywkiw in Yorkton, Nancy Brunt in Kamsack and Jack Robson in Nokomis, and in three parishes in Regina, Michael Jackson and Winna Martin at St. Paul s Cathedral, Susan Page at St. Luke, and Rita Brann at St. Philip. The Roman Catholic dioceses in Saskatchewan have only recently begun diaconal programs. At present, there are two deacons in the Archdiocese of Regina Barry Wood at Holy Rosary Cathedral and Joe Lang at Resurrection Parish, Regina. In 2013, Archbishop Daniel Bohan announced that the archdiocese would begin a program of formation of permanent deacons. It began in the fall of 2014, under the direction of Dr. Brett Salkeld, archdiocesan theologian and ecumenical officer. We re really excited. We ve got 10 great guys who really want to serve, he said, taking the 40 weekends course over four years. Anglican deacon and ARCCIC co-chair Canon Michael Jackson gave an Anglican perspective on the diaconate on October 5 to the candidates and their spouses. The course is being held at St. Michael s Retreat & Ministries, Lumsden. To read more, see the Archdiocese of Regina website: Archbishop Daniel Bohan gave a homily at the First Diaconate Formation Mass. A study on the Anglican diaconate by Canon Michael Jackson, which includes references to the Roman Catholic experience in Saskatchewan, can be found on the Diocese of Qu Appelle website: click on Ministry, then Diaconate. 5

Michael Sinclair, at the 10:30 Solemn Eucharist marking the cathedral s patronal festival. Preacher is ARCCIC member Rev. Dr. John Meehan, SJ, President of Campion College.
