K-8 Religious Education meets Sunday mornings,10:15-11:45am, in the Parish Center October 15 and 22. No sessions will be held on Sunday, October 29 to allow for Catechist Formation. Catechist Assistants and Greeters Needed Can you give us two hours of your time a couple of Sundays a month? We need some extra adults to help with our larger classes, and to mind the front door of the parish center during Religious Education. Safe Environment training will be provided. Contact Maryann to help. Youth Ministry Service teens are invited to help with the Family Faith Formation Day on November 4. Arrive at 1pm to help with set up, help with traffic flow, learning stations, snacks, and clean up. You ll be done at 5pm. Contact Maryann if you can help out. COMMUNION FOR THE HOMEBOUND: If you know of anyone who cannot attend church because of illness or age, and would like to have communion brought to them, please contact the parish office, so that we can arrange for a Eucharistic Minister to bring communion to them. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1971, the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship completed a survey of the presidents of the national liturgical commissions around the world. How were children doing in the liturgical reform? Probably to their surprise, the cardinals learned of special weekday Masses for children designed to teach them how to participate on Sunday, Masses with separate components for children. The decision was made quickly to develop adaptations for Masses where children were a majority of the assembly. Changes would include a simpler structure, understandable texts, a simplified Lectionary, more active participation, and most surprisingly, new Eucharistic Prayers. By 1973 the work was done, and with very specific advice from Pope Paul VI, including the need for two new Eucharistic Prayers, the Directory for Masses with Children was published on December 20, a timely Christmas gift for the children of the world. The prayers are the first to be written fresh in a modern language--not Latin, but French and German--then translated into English, Italian, and Spanish. With a sense of caution, these new prayers were approved for three years, until 1977, but it soon became apparent that they had truly been embraced. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. To ensure its success we need the help of friends and neighbors to secure items for the flea market tables, and raffle prizes, baked goods, vendors, monetary donations, as well as to volunteer to help prepare, decorate, and sell on the day of the event. Ideas? Flea Market - Your trash is someone s treasure. Especially popular are crystal and china, picture frames, table linens, collectibles, handbags, jewelry, and toys. Vendors Would you take a table to sell your handmade items or know someone who would? Rates are very reasonable. Items that are popular are artwork, jewelry, specialty food like candies, petits fours, breads, handknit goods, children s clothes, handmade toys, ceramics, scarves, anything that is unique and fun. Volunteers - Can you help decorate and set up on November 18 th? Can you bake or buy something delicious, wrap it beautifully, and donate it to the bakery table? Can you solicit local businesses for gift cards or other donations for the raffles? Can you help at one of the tables for a couple of hours on the day of the bazaar? There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 Nothing is too small. THANK YOU, THE PARISH COUNCIL COMMITTEE On Thursday, October 5, Cardinal Dolan publicly announced the Renew + Rebuild capital campaign, a $200 million archdiocesan-wide initiative that greatly benefits the parishes and ministries of the Archdiocese of New York. Forty percent of our parishes have participated in the campaign already. Due to the hard work and dedication of pastors, lay leaders, and parishioners, the campaign has raised over $116 million thus far. These funds will have a huge impact across the archdiocese, particularly for parish projects and capital needs. THANK YOU to all of the parishioners who have participated in our parish s Renew + Rebuild effort. Our success has served as an inspiration to the parishes that ran the campaign after us.

7 From From Your Your Pastor Pastor October October 15, st, 2017 Dear Parishioners: A parish means many things to its people. For some it is a community to meet and form friendships. For others, it is a platform where they can volunteer and be involved. It is a place to form memories; saying hello to children in baptism, I do to our beloved in marriage, good bye to our deceased family and friends at funerals. But for the majority of us, a parish in a place where we worship. Fundamental to that worship is music. Here at St. Monica St. Elizabeth of Hungary St. Stephen of Hungary, music isn t entertainment; the choir, the cantors, the organ and other instruments support and enable that special form of prayer which is sung worship. We are blessed here at St. Monica to have such a strong musical tradition. For 18 years the leader of that tradition has been David Schaefer. Over the years David has developed a choir and a music program that has enriched our parish and the larger Yorkville community. From Christmas Concerts to Easter celebrations, from the weekly rounds of Sunday masses, to weddings and funerals, it has been David, aided by Lora Cohan our Assistant Organist, Joe Neal our Cantor and of course David s wife, Debbi Burdett as Cantor and Wedding Coordinator, that has done so much to enable our worship. However, nothing lasts forever. Starting this weekend, David Schaefer is no longer our music director. Joe Neal of course, continues as our Cantor, and we have invited Debbi Burdett to continue in her current position. Moreover, we have asked Lora Cohan to function as interim organist. We have begun a search for a permanent Music Director and I hope to be able to present you with more information on that soon. While there will be some changes in our music, I am committed to making the transition to a new music director as smooth as possible. I know this seems sudden. Change often is. However, regarding the reasons for David s departure, as pastor I have to be respectful of David s privacy. Thank you, David, for your years of service and all you have done to build up the musical tradition of this parish. I trust that soon we will have a new Music Director and we will begin a new chapter in the worship life of our parish. I look forward to being part of that new chapter with all of you.
