1 SEASON OF ADVENT Advent has a twofold nature: It prepares us for Christmas, when we recall Christ s first coming among us, and it is also a time when we look forward to his second coming at the end of the ages. Advent is a season of joyful expectation. (See GNLY, no. 39.) During Advent, each Sunday s Gospel reading has a specific focus. The Old Testament readings, especially those taken from Isaiah, are prophecies about the Messiah and messianic times. The selections from the writings of the Apostles present exhortations and instructions on different themes of this season.

2 72 advent - week 1 NOVEMBER 26 Saturday violet Evening prayer: following Sunday, Volume I, page 137. Night Prayer: beginning tonight, the final anthem may be Loving mother (Alma Redemptoris). NOTES 1. Until next Advent, readings for Mass are taken from Year B (Sundays and solemnities) and Series II (weekdays) of the Lectionary. 2. Blue vestments are not approved for use at any time in Canada. To differentiate the Advent season from Lent, some parishes use blue-shaded (violet) vestments during Advent and red-shaded (purple) vestments in Lent. 3. Prayer of the Faithful: Sample petitions for Advent are given in the Roman Missal, page Solemn Blessing: A special form of the solemn blessing is provided in the Roman Missal for optional use in Advent (no. 1, page 651). 5. In CBW III, the seasonal and Sunday psalms are given in nos ; see liturgical index, no In the Sunday Lectionary, see no , page 44. Advent wreath: For a form for blessing an Advent wreath, see Blessings and Prayers for Home and Family, pp Weddings: See pastoral note 22f. 8. Penance celebration: A carefully prepared penitential service will help the people of God to prepare their welcome for the Lord. It may also serve as preparation for the celebration of (individual) Reconciliation at a later time. While this service may be celebrated any time during Advent, it is recommended during the days before Christmas, demonstrating the community s desire to welcome the Lord with purified

3 november hearts. It is preferable to celebrate penitential services on weekdays rather than on Sundays. Many helps for preparing a suitable celebration are given in Penance Celebrations (1981, CCCB, Ottawa). 9.
