2 How to Make A Holy Hour Try dividing the Holy Hour into four 15 minute periods, each with its own purpose. Take sufficient time to really visualize the purpose in each period. Do not proceed till you have made that particular purpose clear and definite. 1) For that first 15 minute period: dedicate it to adoration, that is, the realization of who is present in the Holy Eucharist. Think of the marvel of this great reality: Christ, the God-Man, is truly present in his divinity as well as his humanity, body and soul. 2) A suggestion for the second 15 minutes: devote the time to thoughts and prayers of thanksgiving to God as you grasp the wonder of who is present, and all that he has done. See what God has done for you. Now let words of thanksgiving rise up in your soul, or just simply give thanks to God for his presence here in such a remarkable way. 3) Dedicate the next 15 minutes of the Holy Hour to atonement. Why atonement? A look into one's own conscience and the conscience of the world gives the answer. You might wish to express your sorrow for your own sins, as well as for the evil that is in the world. But remember that in Christ we find hope, for He has conquered and redeemed the world. 4) A suggestion for the last 15 minutes. Dedicate this to petition. First of all, ask Jesus here present in the Holy Eucharist for the grace he wants most for you at this time of your life. Pray for each member of your family, your friends, people of your neighborhood and parish, for all mankind. Pray for conversions for those who are away from the Church and the Sacraments. Pray for the sick and lonely, the discouraged, our youth, the unborn, our country, its leaders. Pray for our Holy Father, and for all priests, religious and lay ministers. Entrust all your concerns to the Lord who loves you. Commit yourself to living in that love. VOCATIONS PRAYER BY CARDINAL SÉAN O MALLEY Prayer to Mary, Mother of the Divine Shepherd Holy Mother of the Good Shepherd, turn your motherly care to our Diocese. Intercede for us to the Lord of the Harvest to send more laborers to the harvest. Inspire vocations in our time. Let the word of your Son Be made flesh anew in the lives of persons anxious to proclaim the Good News of everlasting life. Draw them near to the heart of your Son so that they can understand the beauty and the joy that awaits them when the Lord Jesus calls them to be his witnesses. Amen. A PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Father in heaven, you sent us your only Son to redeem us and to build your kingdom on earth. Please give us the wisdom and strength we need to follow His call. Grant to the faithful a spirit of generosity, that Church vocations may flourish. Bless our priests with holiness and courage, that they may lead your people to Christ. Help all sisters and brothers to fulfill their sacred promises and sobe effective signs of your kingdom. Lord, invite more men and women to your service. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. PRAYER OF ST. FAUSTINA I adore You, Lord and Creator, hidden in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I adore You for all the works of Your hands, that reveal to me so much wisdom, goodness and mercy, O Lord. You have spread so much beauty over the earth and it tells me about Your beauty, even though these beautiful things are but a faint reflection of You, incomprehensible Beauty. And although You have hidden Yourself and concealed your beauty, my eye, enlightened by faith, reaches You and my soul recognizes its Creator, its Highest Good, and my heart is completely immersed in prayer of adoration. Amen. My Lord Jesus Christ, for the love which You bear to men, You remain night and day in this Sacrament full of compassion and of love, awaiting, calling, and welcoming all who come to visit You. I believe that You are present in the Sacrament of the Altar: I adore You from the abyss of my nothingness, and I thank You for all the graces which You have bestowed upon me and in particular for having given me Yourself in this Sacrament, for having given me your holy Mother Mary for my advocate, and for having called me to visit You in this chapel. 19

5 It is getting late and death approaches. I fear the darkness, the temptations, the dryness, the cross, the sorrows. O how I need You, my Jesus, in this night of exile! Stay with me tonight, Jesus, in life with all its dangers, I need You. Let me recognize You as Your disciples did at the breaking of bread, so that the Eucharistic Communion be the light which disperses the darkness, the force which sustains me, the unique joy of my heart. Stay with me, Lord, because at the hour of my death, I want to remain united to You, if not by Communion, at least by grace and love. Stay with me, Jesus, I do not ask for divine consolation, because I do not merit it, but, the gift of Your Presence, oh yes, I ask this of You! Stay with me, Lord, for it is You alone I look for. Your Love, Your Grace, Your Will, Your Heart, Your Spirit, because I love You and ask no other reward but to love You more and more. With a firm love, I will love You with all my heart while on earth and continue to love You perfectly during all eternity. THE DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET This devotion was given to Saint Faustina Kowalska, a Sister of Our Lady of Mercy in a series of visions of Jesus in the 1930 s. 1. Begin at the Cross with the Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 2. Pray each of the following prayers in succession on the 3 beads above the Cross. OUR FATHER, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. 3

6 HAIL MARY, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of death. Amen. The Apostle's Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Sprit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. 3. Then on the large Our Father Bead pray the following: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. 4. On the 10 smaller Hail Mary Beads pray the following: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. (Repeat step 3 and 4 for all five decades) 5. Conclude by praying the following prayer three times: Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. ST. PADRE PIO S PRAYER AFTER HOLY COMMUNION Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have You present so that I do not forget You. You know how easily I abandon You. Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak and I need Your strength, that I may not fall so often. Stay with me, Lord, for You are my life, and without You, I am without fervor. Stay with me, Lord, for You are my light, and without You, I am in darkness. Stay with me, Lord, to show me Your will. Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear Your voice and follow You. Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love You very much, and always be in Your company. Stay with me, Lord, if You wish me to be faithful to You. Stay with me, Lord, for as poor as my soul is, I wish it to be a place of consolation for You, a nest of Love. Stay with me, Jesus, for it is getting late and the day is coming to a close, and life passes, death, judgement, eternity approaches. 7 God's hosts to save me From snares of the devil, From temptations of vices, From everyone who desires me ill, Afar and anear, alone or in a multitude. I summon today all these powers between me and evil, Against every cruel merciless power that opposes my body and soul, Against incantations of false prophets, Against black laws of pagandom, Against false laws of heretics, Against craft of idolatry, Against spells of witches and smiths and wizards, Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul. Christ shield me today: Against poison, against burning, Against drowning, against wounding, So that there may come to me abundance of reward. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. V Behold the handmaid of the Lord: R Be it done unto me according to Thy word. Hail Mary... V And the Word was made Flesh: R And dwelt among us. Hail Mary... V Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, R that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. V Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen. THE MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. 8 THE MAGNIFICAT OF MARY My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. For He has looked with favor on his lowly servant. JOSEPH O blessed Joseph, faithful guardian of my Redeemer, Jesus Christ, protector of thy chaste spouse, the virgin Mother of God, I choose thee this day to be my special patron and advocate and I firmly resolve to honor thee all the days of my life. Therefore I humbly beseech thee to receive me as thy client, to instruct me in every doubt, to comfort me in every affliction, to obtain for me and for all the knowledge and love of the Heart of Jesus, and finally to defend and protect me at the hour of my death. PATRICK S BREASTPLATE I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, Through the belief in the Threeness, Through confession of the Oneness Of the Creator of Creation. I arise today Through the strength of Christ's birth with his baptism, Through the strength of his crucifixion with his burial, Through the strength of his resurrection with his ascension, Through the strength of his descent for the judgment of Doom. 9 PRAYER OF ST. JOHN OF DAMASCUS Hold dominion over my heart, O Lord: Keep it as your inheritance. Make your dwelling in me, Along with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Widen in me the cords of your tabernacle, Even the operations of your Most Holy Spirit. For you are my God, and I will praise you, together with the Eternal Father, And our quickening Spirit, Now, henceforth and forever. Amen. PRAYER OF ST. GREGORY NAZIANZUS O all-transcendent God what other name describes Thee? What words can sing Thy praises? No word at all denotes Thee. What mind can probe Thy secret? No mind at all can grasp Thee. Alone beyond the power of speech, all men can speak of springs from Thee. Alone beyond the power of thought, all men can think of stems from Thee. All things proclaim Thee - things that can speak, things that cannot. All things revere Thee - things that have reason, things that have none. The whole world's longing and pain mingle about Thee. All things breathe Thee a prayer, a silent hymn of Thy own composing. All that exists Thee uphold, all things in concert move to Thy orders. Thou art the end of all that is, Thou art one, Thou art all; Thou art none of the things that are, Thou art not a part and not the whole. All names are at Thy disposal; how shall I name Thee, the only unnamable? What mind's affinities with heaven can pierce the veils above the clouds? Mercy, all-transcendent God, what other name describes Thee? THE ROSARY The Rosary has been a source of strength and hope for Catholic Christians throughout the ages, and is a prayer through which we can enter into the Mysteries of the Life of Christ. Opening Prayers (The sign of the Cross is made with the Cross of the Rosary) In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (The Creed is prayed on the Cross) The Apostle's Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Rosary Proper The Rosary is a prayer of meditation on the Life of Christ presented as a series of Mysteries. There are 4 sets of 5 Mysteries each: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and Luminous. (We meditate on each mystery by praying a decade. ) One Our Father (large bead), 10 Hail Marys (small beads) 1 Glory Be (on the chain before the next large bead) (It is also traditional to pray the Fatima Prayer at the end of each decade). The Fatima Prayer: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy. Amen. THE JESUS PRAYER Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. PRAYER OF ST. JOHN CHYSOSTOM O Lord, my God, I am not worthy that you should come into my soul, but I am glad that you have come to me because in your loving kindness you desire to dwell in me. You ask me to open the door of my soul, which you alone have created, so that you may enter into it with your loving kindness and dispel the darkness of my mind. I believe that you will do this for you did not turn away Mary Magdalene when she approached you in tears. Neither did you withhold forgiveness from the tax collector who repented of his sins or from the good thief who asked to be received into your kingdom. Indeed, you numbered as your friends all who came to you with repentant hearts. O God, you alone are blessed always, now, and forever. Amen. PRAYER OF ST. DMITRI OF ROSTOV Come, our Light, and illumine our darkness. Come, our Life, and raise us from death. Come, our Physician, and heal our wounds. Come, Flame of Divine Love, and burn up our sins. Come, our King, and sit upon the throne of our hearts and reign there. For You alone are my King and my Lord. Amen. PRAYER OF ST. 12 Concluding Prayers (After the completion of five mysteries 5 decades, the following is customarily prayed on the medal that connects the circlet of beads to the Cross) The Hail Holy Queen: Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. V Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. R That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. The Rosary Prayer: V Let us pray, R O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation. Grant, we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord.
