3 2 Follow me to the Nave The word Nave comes from a Latin word navis which means ship. Do you think the Nave looks like a ship? What can you hear in the Nave? Look around you, below your feet and above your head. What words would you use to describe York Minster? Can you find a medieval golden dragon, soaring above your head? What do you think this dragon might have been used for? The dragon is one of the Minster mysteries! We don t know what it was used for. We think it might have been a lever to lift a heavy font cover. Like this AMAZING FACT The Nave is as large as a full sized football pitch!
4 3 Can you find the famous 5 Sisters window? Can you spot these patterns in the window? Design another pattern here, or copy one from the window. AMAZING FACT The patterns in the window are influenced by Islamic designs.
5 Follow me 4 to the Chapter House Welcome to the Chapter House. This is my home! How does the Chapter House make you feel? Happy Thoughtful Excited Cold Anything else? Sad Cheerful Warm Peaceful Look at all the stone seats around the edge of the Chapter House. These are where the Canons sit (the people who manage York Minster). Together they form a committee called the Chapter. The Chapter House is their meeting room. It is over 700 years old! Can you find the Dean s seat? Go and sit in it. The Dean is in charge of the Chapter of York. Touch the different types of stone around the Chapter House. One is a type of limestone called magnesian limestone (the lighter stone) and the other is a different kind of limestone called Purbeck marble (the darker stone). Can you tell the difference? What do they feel like? Can you find me hiding amongst all of the faces in the Chapter House?
6 5 Can you find this monument in the north quire aisle? Monuments tell us a lot about people in the past. They tell us what was important to them during their life and also about what they looked like, and what kind of clothes they might have worn. This monument is to Sir Henry Belassis and his wife. Can you fill in the missing person? Which famous queen does the lady in this monument remind you of? Who do you think the people at the bottom of the monument might be? Follow me to the quire Can you spot a huge golden eagle? It is used to hold the Bible. AMAZING FACT This eagle is not in fact made from gold; it is made from brass and weighs a massive 1.5 tonnes. That s the same weight as a fully grown hippopotamus!
7 6 See if you can find these great chests in the south quire aisle. These chests were used to store copes (capes) for special occasions. How many wolf heads can you find decorating the top? I found...can you add the design onto the top of the chest? Follow me to Archbishop Thomson s monument in the south transept Who is missing from this photograph of Archbishop Thomson s monument? Can you sketch him in? The dog at the bottom of Archbishop Thomson s monument is called Scamp. He was the Archbishop s faithful friend. Do you have a faithful friend? How might you thank them?
