No. 150 november 2016 Dear Rev. Fathers / Sisters / Brothers / Lay Faithful, 1. ALL SAINTS DAY The Feast of All Saints is celebrated all over the Catholic world on 1 st November with great solemnity. On this day the Church rejoices over all the canonized and beatified saints as well as the multitude of those who are in heaven enjoying the beatific vision. We must follow in His footsteps and conform ourselves to His image seeking the will of the Father in all things. We must devote ourselves, with all our being, to the glory of God and service of our neighbour. In this way, the holiness of the People of God will grow into an abundant harvest of good, as is admirably shown by the life of so many saints in Church history (LG, 40). The Church recalls our brothers and sisters of all nations and tribes standing before the throne and in sight of the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands, proclaiming Him who redeemed them in His Blood. The Feast of All Saints inspires us with great hope. I exhort all of you, dear Fathers, to celebrate this solemnity with jubilation so that through the powerful intercession of all saints, we may be found worthy to join them in the heavenly Jerusalem. Saints inspire us and give the message that all of us are called to be saints and we can be one if we desire. They tell us that our life on earth is a journey towards heaven and we need to march forward following Christ to reach our eternal destination. Let us pray that through their intercession God may give us the grace to die to ourselves and live our daily martyrdom willingly accepting all the challenges of our life in a Christian spirit of love and sacrifice. 17
2. RAJYOTSAVA DAY The Rajyotsava Day is the state festival of Karnataka and is observed on November 1st every year. The day is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Karnataka as the state was formed on this day. The Rajyotsava Day is marked as a government holiday in the state of Karnataka. In 1950, India became republic and different provinces were formed in the country on the basis of language spoken in the particular region and this gave birth to the state of Mysore including various places in south India, which were earlier ruled by the kings. Finally after the prolonged discussion over the issue, in the year 1973 the State of all Kannada speaking people was renamed as Karnataka on 1 st November. The credit for this landmark decision owes to the Late Devaraj Urs, the then Chief Minister of our State; and every year the November 1 st is celebrated as Kannada Rajyotsava or Karnataka Rajyotsava meaning State festival of Karnataka. The Rajyotsava Day is celebrated with great joy and vigor all over the State of Karnataka. The State Government gives Rajyotsava awards on this day, which are awarded to those people for their contributions in the development of Karnataka. The colourful procession is also accompanied by stunning performances of the folk artists in the fields of drama, dance and classical music. On the Karnataka Rajyotsava Day, let us offer special prayers for the State, its leaders and all people that all may enjoy peace, equality, justice and prosperity in our State. 3. ALL SOULS DAY The Church remembers and prays for all the faithful departed on 2 nd November. Requiem Masses are offered for the faithful departed who are in the state of purification. Naturally, Christians offer special prayers on this day for their departed family members, relatives and friends. There are two Plenary Indulgences attached to the All Souls Day, one for visiting a church and another for visiting a cemetery. Praying for the dead is a Christian 18
obligation for which the Church devotes the month of November. While addressing the crowds in St Peter s Square on , Pope Francis called for prayers for the departed, including those no one remembers. He said: We remember the victims of war and violence, the many little ones of the world crushed by hunger and poverty. We remember the anonymous ones who rest in common graves. We remember our brothers and sisters killed because they are Christians and those who sacrificed their lives to serve others. We especially entrust to the Lord those who have left us last year. Church tradition has always urged prayer for the dead, in particular by offering the celebration of the Eucharist for them: it is the best spiritual help that we can give to their souls, particularly to the most abandoned ones, he added. Let us encourage our people to pray for the dear departed so that those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith may obtain remission of their sins and be admitted to the company of saints. A plenary Indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory, is granted to the faithful who a) On one of the days from 1-8 November visit devoutly a Cemetery or who simply pray mentally for the dead; b) On All Souls Day (or else, with the permission of the local Ordinary, on the Sunday that precedes or follows, visit a Church or Chapel with devotion and there recite the Our Father and the Creed. Please refer to the ORDO 2016 on page163). I request you to explain your parishioners about the importance of this commemoration and the plenary indulgence attached to it. The importance of All Souls Day was made clear by Pope Benedict XV ( ), when he granted all priests the privilege of celebrating three Masses on All Souls Day: one in favour of any person, the second to be made applicable to all the faithful departed and the third, for the intention of the Holy Father. Praying for the Souls in Purgatory is not only an act of charity but also the Christian obligation as they are a part of the Church. Prayer for the dead is one of the greatest acts of charity we can perform. Our prayers help them during their time in Purgatory, so that they can enter the fullness of joy in heaven. Let us educate our people in our parishes and Mission Centers to pray for their departed and offer Masses for the repose of their souls.. 19
Let us also remember our deceased priests, bishops and archbishops who ministered in our Archdiocese. 4. POPE FRANCIS NAMES 17 NEW CARDINALS Pope Francis has promoted 17 Roman Catholic Prelates from around the world to the high rank of Cardinals, including 13 who are under 80 years of age and thus eligible to succeed him one day. Pope Francis, making the surprise announcement during his weekly address, said that the ceremony to elevate the prelates, known as a consistory, would be held on November 19. Their provenance from 11 nations expresses the universality of the Church that announces and witnesses to the good news of the mercy of God in every corner of the world, Pope Francis said. The new cardinal-electors, those under 80, come from Italy, the Central African Republic, Spain, the US, Brazil, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Belgium, Mauritius, Mexico and Papua New Guinea. Only one of the 13 cardinal-electors will take on a Vatican job. His Holiness said the current Vatican Ambassador in Syria, Italian Archbishop Mario Zenari, would be elevated but remain in his post to show the Church s concern for beloved and martyred Syria an allusion to the devastating civil war there. It was believed to be the first time in recent history a Vatican Ambassador, known as a Nuncio, would have the rank of Cardinal. The Central African Republic, Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Lesotho will have a cardinal for the first time, underscoring Francis conviction that the Church is a global institution that should become increasingly less Euro-centric. 5. POPE FRANCIS ON SUNDAY CANONIZED SEVEN NEW SAINTS Pope Francis on Sunday 23 rd October canonized seven new Saints including Argentina s gaucho priest Jose Gabriel del Rosario Brochero known as Cura Brochero, the Argentinian who made it his mission to take the Gospel message of salvation to the peripheries, was proclaimed a Saint together with six others in a Mass in St. Peter s Square. 20
During his homily the Pope said saints are men and women who enter fully into the mystery of prayer. Men and women who struggle with prayer, letting the Holy Spirit pray and struggle in them. The others to be canonized were two Italians, two from France, a Spaniard and a young Mexican martyr, José Sanchez del Rio who died during the Cristero struggle upholding his faith. Some 80,000 people filled St. Peter s Square for the occasion, including many flag-waving Argentinians who had made the journey to Rome to see Brochero elevated to sainthood. Argentine President Mauricio Macri and his family were present at the ceremony. 6. CHILDREN S DAY On 14 th November we will be celebrating the Children s Day. Though the schools hold the celebrations, I wish that the Parish Priests encourage them to attend the Holy Mass in the morning celebrated at a convenient time for them and offer special prayers for the children. The children need special attention in the parish as they are the hope of the parish as well as the nation. Please organise some special programmes for them on that day or on the following Sunday. As children and youth are the future leaders of the Church and nation, special attention has to be given to their spiritual, intellectual and social formation. Jesus welcomed the children saying Let the children come to me, for such is the Kingdom of heaven. Do not forbid them from me (Mt.19:14). Hence let us also keep the children close to Jesus and the church that He may bless them. 7. SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING (20 th November) When Pius XI instituted this feast it was with the intention of affirming and celebrating the sovereignty of Jesus Christ and the power that the Father had conferred on Him because of His victory over evil, sin and suffering through His Death and Resurrection. The historical context of that time was the rapid rise of Communism and Fascism in major parts of the world which were swaying the minds of people, especially the youth, brainwashing them with unchristian and anti-christian ideologies and preparing them to be cannon fodder in the wars that were even then being relentlessly prepared 21
for. The Pope wished to draw the attention of humanity to the truth that the only real power is the power of love, compassion, mercy and justice, incarnated by Christ who said: My Kingdom is not of this world. Situation of the world today and particularly in our country is not too different from what it was then. We are witnessing today with increasing trepidation the rise of Fascist forces that perpetuate lies, divide people and seek to impose obscurantist beliefs and ideologies on the people, especially the youth. In this deeply disturbing situation we are called upon to proclaim that only truth, love, brotherhood and justice are important and that in Christ Jesus we can find our true peace and happiness. The Closing Day of The Liturgical Year and The Year of Mercy. While requesting the Parish Priests to organize a befitting liturgical service on the occasion of the Closing Day of The Liturgical Year and The Year of Mercy in the Parishes, I request the Deans to organize the Eucharistic Procession at the Deanery level. Please encourage as many people as possible from your Parishes and Missions Units to participate in this Procession to make a public manifestation of our faith in Jesus ever present with us in the Most Holy Eucharist. 8. CLOSING OF THE JUBILEE DOORS AND THE YEAR OF MERCY The 2016 Jubilee was first announced by Pope Francis on March 13, It was declared in the Pope s April 2015 Papal Bull of Indiction, Misericordiae Vultus ( The Face of Mercy ). It is the 27 th Holy Year in history, following the ordinary 2000 Jubilee during St. John Paul II s Papacy. The Year of Mercy is an invitation an invitation to love, kindness, and unbounded generosity. Pope Francis is offered us the opportunity to encounter the incredible mercy of God, and encountering mercy means encountering God. It also transforms our lives, our relationships, our work, and our ability to embrace and experience God s eternal presence within and around us. During the Year of Mercy, as directed by the Holy Father, the Diocesan Cathedral Doors and the other Doors of the Shrines that were designated by 22
the local Ordinaries were solemnly opened worldwide on 13 th December, And the pilgrims entered through these Holy Doors during the past months experienced the Mercy of God and obtained Plenary Indulgence. On Sunday, November 13, 2016 Closing of the Holy Doors in the Basilicas of Rome and in the Dioceses of the world. In our Archdiocese, The Three Jubilee Doors will be closed on the following dates: 1. St. Francis Xavier s Cathedral on Saturday 6 th November 2016 at 5.00 p.m. followed by the Holy Mass. 2. St. Mary s Shrine Basilica, Shivajinagar on Saturday 12 th November 2016 at 5.00 p.m. followed by the Holy Mass. 3. Infant Jesus Shrine Parish on Thursday 10 th November 2016 at 5.00 p.m. followed by the Holy Mass. On Sunday, November 20, 2016 Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Closing of the Holy Door of St. Peter s Basilica and the conclusion of the Jubilee of Mercy. In our Archdiocese, The Jubilee Year of Mercy will be closed on 20 th November, 2016 in all our Parishes. The Archdiocesan Liturgical Committee has prepared a Special Liturgy for the occasion, and it is attached to this month s Circular. 9. ST. CECILIA: PATRON SAINT OF MUSICIANS November 22 nd is the Feast day of St. Cecilia, one of the most revered of the early Virgin Martyrs of Rome, as evidenced by her name appearing in the Roman Canon of the Mass. She lived during the Roman Empire in the 3rd century and was born to a wealthy Roman family. She vowed her virginity to Christ, but her parents married her off anyway. She then converted her husband to the Christian faith, and he in turn respected her virginity and 23
converted his brother. St. Cecilia responded by converting hundreds of people and burying her husband. This and her refusal to worship false gods resulted in her being arrested. According to legend, St. Cecilia was not martyred easily. They first attempted to suffocate her but it did not affect her. Then they attempted to behead her but they were again unsuccessful. She instead bled to death for three days as she continued to preach and people collected her blood in sponges and napkins. The story of Saint Cecilia is one of courage, evangelization, and love of God in the midst of persecution and strife. The Statue the Martyrdom of St. Cecilia is located under the main altar of the Basilica of St. Cecilia in Rome. She is most remembered today as the patron of musicians due to this legend: While the profane music of her wedding was heard, Cecilia was singing in her heart a hymn of love of Jesus, her true spouse. St. Cecilia is typically portrayed in art, statues, rosaries, and medals with a beautiful harp. May I wish all the choir members in our Archdiocese a very happy feast of St. Cecilia. 10. THE SEASON OF ADVENT We begin the season of Advent on 27 th November. The Advent is more than a mere preparation for the Feast of Christmas. It is a season of hope, a time of conversion, an opportunity to sacrifice, share and serve the last, the least and the lost, with whom God, in the Babe of Bethlehem, chose to identify Himself by being born in a manger. Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. It is a season of prayer, fasting and penance. Let us introspect ourselves during this time of Grace and wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The liturgical readings of Advent never fail to draw us towards the eternal hope and the Saviour who will come to liberate and redeem us from the bondage that enslaves the human spirit. Unfortunately, the unceasing and almost irresistible lure of consumerism tends to turn this only season into a 24
hectic time of commercial chaos and confusion, leaving hardly any time or energy for the nourishment of the spirit. I encourage all of you to approach the holy season of Advent as a time for spiritual renewal, so that everyone s heart truly becomes the cave of Bethlehem where the Saviour was born rather than the inns of Bethlehem where there was no room for Him. 11. ESTABLISHMENT OF PARISH PASTORAL COUNCILS/ PARISH FINANCE COMMITTEE FROM 1 ST JANUARY, 2017 The term of the present Parish Pastoral Councils (PPC) and Parish Finance Committees (PFC) in the parishes of the Archdiocese will end on 31 st December, And, therefore, we should establish in each parish a new Parish Pastoral Council and Parish Finance Committee by 1 st January, I appeal to all the parish priests to establish these statutory bodies as per the norms given on page nos. 94 to 113 of the Revised Archdiocesan Pastoral Guide and make them functional from 1 st January, The term of new PPCs and PFCs that are to be established will be for 2 years and will end on The Parish Priests are expected to establish the PPCs and PFCs in their parishes by the 15 th December, 2016, and to send the names to the Archbishop for approval. 12. DIRECTIVES FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE LITURGY The CCBI has published Directives for the Celebration of the Liturgy containing directives for the celebration of the Latin-Rite Liturgy in India. The 27 th Plenary Assembly of the CCBI which was held in 2015 deliberated on the theme Liturgy and Life. The members of the Assembly requested the Liturgical Commission to prepare Directives for the Celebration of the Liturgy for liturgical renewal in the Church in India. The CCBI Commission for Liturgy headed by Archbishop Dominic Jala and Rev. Dr. Ayres Fernandes prepared the Liturgical Directives. It was released by Oswald Cardinal Gracias, President of the CCBI and FABC during the 75 th Executive Committee Meeting of the CCBI on 20 th September 2016 at St John s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore. We welcome these directives as a gift to the Church in India that raises the beauty and dignity of Liturgy in the Church. A copy of 25
the above book is given to all the priests during the recollection day. Those who have not taken the copy, please collect it from my secretary. A directory such as this is very beneficial to every one of us. It can certainly help us to get to know each other, to communicate easily with each other in the Archdiocese. It can also help us to build among us a family atmosphere. And to fulfill this purpose, I recommend everyone in our Archdiocese to possess a copy of this valuable Archdiocesan Directory.
