484 Hamilton St. Regina, SK S4R 2A7 (306) eadmcanada.com NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER 2017 #183 Jesus told St. Faustina, Souls perish in spite of My bitter Passion. I am giving them the last hope of salvation; that is, the Feast of My Mercy. If they will not adore My mercy, they will perish for all eternity. Secretary of My mercy, write, tell souls about this great mercy of mine, because the awful day, the day of My justice is near. (Diary, 965). All Saints Day, November 1 st All Souls Day, November 2 nd,
Dear Apostles of Divine Mercy, With the month of November approaching, we are called once again to remember the great multitude of saints in heaven, who can help us, and the souls in Purgatory who are waiting for redemption through our prayers. On November 26, we will be ending the 100 Anniversary Year of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal. We should take some time to ponder this grace we received and reflect on our deeper relationship with Our Blessed Mother. This month s newsletter is entitled Adoration, Salvation For This Age! Adoration What is this all about? Adorers who are these people and what does this mean? It means that we spend time and are attached to the Adorable Person of our Lord living in the Eucharist. If we belong to the Son, we also belong to His Mother. The devotion to the Eucharist is growing, as the Holy Eucharist has become a means of salvation for this age. Jesus spoke to St. Faustina, these words, My daughter, look at My merciful Heart. As I fixed my gaze on the Most Sacred Heart, the same rays of light, as are represented in the image as blood and water, came forth from it, and I understood how great is the Lord s mercy (Diary 177). We may question: Where and when will we find true happiness? St. Faustina points us in the right direction as she stated fixed my gaze on His Most Sacred Heart. This is where the answer lies, as we sit before the Lord in Adoration. Our Lord did not conceal the Mercy of God, but revealed it through the Incarnation, through His hidden and public life. He emphasized it in His teachings, and above all, He presented it to us vividly through the mystery of the Redemption, by His death on the Cross for the sins of the whole world. If we keep our eyes on Jesus, we will be capable of serving Him and our neighbor at the same time. Be merciful, therefore, even as your Father is Merciful (Luke 6:36). He commands us, that we should be merciful, because our salvation depends on this. As All Saints Day and All Souls Day approach, we should take special time to pray for the church militant, that is the living members on earth, the church triumphant, they are the saints in heaven who can hear us and pray for us, and the church suffering, which are the souls in purgatory expiating their sins. Let us pray that Mother Mary and the Saints would invigorate us and give us courage to be good faithful Christians. by Shirley Oleskiw, EADM, Director Page 2
OUR EADM CENTRE Mary s Garden has been prepared for winter with angels and lights for the months of October and November. We celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7 by reciting the Litany and Rosary, and celebrated Mass on October 13, the 100 Anniversary of Fatima. With the statues of Our Lady of Fatima in our Chapel, which touched the International Pilgrim Virgin, many took advantage of the special grace available here at the Chapel. Daily Adoration of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament continues here in our Chapel. We thank our faithful Adorers, who have come faithfully to pray here at the Chapel. In these difficult uncertain times, we need to spend more time with our Lord in Adoration. This is Heaven on earth. Why do so many people ignore adoration and run from it with many excuses? If we want salvation we must stay connected through adoration and receiving Him in the Eucharist as often as possible. Let us pray that more people will sign-up to become Adorers As we prepare for the Second Coming of Christ, we need to know what Jesus expects for us. In her writing in the Diary, St. Faustina tells us how Jesus instructed her and us about His mercy and how we should pray and live. We continue to encourage our members to study the Diary to learn about her interior life of prayer and adoration. She was canonized a Saint in the year 2000, yet very few people know about her. The 52 page booklet, The Miracles at EADM, is available for $7.00 plus $3.00 for postage. The pilgrimage to Guadalupe for January10-17, 2018 has been filled. Final payments are due by November 10, Mass will be held on Thursday, November 1 with 6:30 pm. Page 3
Page 4 Adoration, Salvation For This Age! We can spend some time trying to focus on how we can hear God and do His Will. God speaks to us in internal ways, especially when we are in a state of Adoration. He can come to us through our thoughts, in our hearts, and through our weaknesses. It is very important to take the time to listen to what Jesus is telling us at that moment. We live in a very busy world, with lots of noise, so sometimes we may find it very difficult to quiet our minds. Prayer can begin the silent conversation with Jesus. We can ponder and place our life under Mary s protection. As we are bound to Jesus, we should also have recourse to His Mother. Jesus is King in the Eucharist, and He wishes us to serve. Therefore for some twenty years after His death and resurrection, He left us His Mother. She became the first adorer, and our model. What a beautiful life! When we reflect upon the Lord s love for His Blessed Mother, we are lost in wonder that He consented to separate from her in body, and allowed Himself to be left in the Eucharist, to be adored by her and by us as well. What a privilege! She suffered so much while He was on earth, and yet He wanted her as His first adorer, to teach the Apostles, like unto children still in the cradle, a mother who needed to educate them, a model whom they could copy, and thus He left us His own Mother. As generations have passed, we too have recourse to this great gift of Himself, that He had left behind. Mary s whole life was adoration! While He was in her womb, she already adored Him. Mary s adoration was more pleasing to Him than that of all the Angels. Do you think for one moment that Jesus is not pleased with our adoration? We must always adore our Eucharistic Jesus, but we must vary our adoration as the Blessed Mother did hers. We need to recall all the mysteries of time and religion that are connected with the Eucharist, so that we do not fall into a routine. If our love is not nourished by a new form of devotion, a new thought, we will become tepid in prayer and adoration. We should for this reason commemorate all the mysteries in the Eucharist. Jesus is our friend, so we need to remember and share all His goodness, His love, and the graces that He has for us. Let us Pray! O Mary! teach us the life of adoration! Teach us to see, as you did, all the mysteries and all the graces in the Eucharist! by Shirley Oleskiw
Other Ways God Speaks to Us! Some of the external ways that God speaks to us is through His Church, His Word, through circumstances and others, through wise council, and lastly, through our pain and suffering. Through His Church God speaks in powerful ways. The Church is the voice of the unborn and the poor; it provides moral direction for society. Many think the Bible alone is the source of Truth, but even in Scripture itself we read that the Church is the church of the living God, the pillar and the bulwark of the truth (1 Tim 3:15). The teachings of the Church are found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a norm of truth and holiness. The Word of God is inspired wisdom for all ages. It guides us and describes the relationship that we, His people, are to have with Him. Through His Word, God inspires and enlightens us, and also comforts us, heals us, warns and assures us, and sends us out. God speaks to us through circumstances, or God-incidences. It may be a long overdue hug, a phone call that was a prayer answered, or God giving you an answer through the words of another. In Rom 8:28 we read that, We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him. He speaks to us through the wise council of holy people and spiritual friends. We are social beings; we are not an island. People need the Lord and each other. He wants to give us anointed leadership. The role of pain and suffering in our lives, is also a means by which God speaks to us. Our crosses provide a powerful way that God speaks to us. It is through the broken vessel of our lives, the sadness, loneliness, despair, and rejections that enable our hearts to hear Him. Broken hearts are the vehicle of grace. Paul says that we hold the treasure of grace in clay pots, which can be molded in any fashion. We can be beautiful on the outside, yet underneath, we have many problems and are hurting badly. Yet, it is through us that the Rays of Mercy shine out to others. We are like broken glass, radiating the Rays of Mercy and refracting the light into the beautiful colors of the rainbow. You see, our wounds are our glory. They remind us of our fragility, our desperate needs, and our humanness. by Shirley Oleskiw Patience Patience is adjusting your time to God s time. Page 5
Come to Me in Adoration and in the Eucharist Jesus, You are our Saviour, as we joyfully come to adore You in the Holy Eucharist. St. Faustina had great love for Jesus in the Eucharist. She prayed, Jesus-Eucharist, Immortal God, Who dwell in my heart without cease. When I possess You, death itself can do me no harm. Love tells me that I will see You at life s end. Jesus-Eucharist, life of my soul, You have raised me up to the eternal spheres, and this, by Your agony and death midst terrible tortures (Diary, 1393). Jesus instituted the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, at the Last Supper, offering Himself through His passion, death and resurrection, for our salvation. In prayerful contemplation, we can focus our attention on Jesus during His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. Here He suffered terribly for love of us, choosing to obey the Father s will to complete His sacrifice unto death on the Cross. We need to meditate on the words of Jesus, so that we can get an idea as to how much our salvation cost Him. He asked Peter, James and John to watch and pray with Him: Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and He said to His disciples, Sit here while I go over there and pray. He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to feel sorrow and distress. Then He said to them, My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and watch with Me....When He returned to His disciples He found them asleep. He said to Peter, Could you not watch one hour with Me?...Withdrawing a second time, He prayed again, My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without My drinking it, Your will be done! (Mt 36,37,38,40,42). As we sit before our Lord in adoration we need to meditate on the love that Christ has for us every day. Let us pray with joy and fervent love for Jesus in the Eucharist, and that we may be able to spend time with Him. We should experience that same joy when He comes to us in Holy Communion. We should long for the moment when we cause Him to be taken from the tabernacle, and He should be able to come to us with the same delight as though it were again to Mary that He came. He will if we are pure! He expects nothing else from us but this preparation of purity. Great purity should be a priority when we receive Holy Communion, without it all other virtues are of no avail, and our soul will be a prison for Him. Cloth me, O Mary, with this purity, so that I may receive your Son worthily! by Shirley Oleskiw Page 6
The Loving Heart of Jesus Since man was called into existence out of God s merciful love and made in His image and likeness, we strive to fulfill His will as true disciples. We are dependent on our loving Father and yet have free will. We live in a flawed and imperfect world with a perfect and merciful Creator. We strive daily for virtues and graces to embrace our state in life, a prayer life and our call to holiness. The sin against the Holy Spirit is the greatest sin. It is unforgivable because man blinded by his pride decides to reject God s mercy and the salvation offered to him by the Holy Spirit (See Diary, 1742). Accepting interdependency with God is not denying our free will. Angels accepted to obey God, contemplating and praising the depths of His mercy; they drown in His mercy,... possessing in knowledge the Trinity of Persons, the oneness of Godhead (Diary, 1742). Our souls continually have a thirst for God. The Holy Spirit guides our decisions to live in His love. God has no need of us, but He decides to share His happiness with us. In all our prayers, repentance, penance and suffering, we are never alone. God is nearer than ever to the soul which is suffering (Diary, 109). Souls can come to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist to draw strength. St. Faustina prays to Jesus, the living springs of mercy, for souls thirsting for love: others to wash the wounds of their sins, and still others, exhausted by life, to draw strength (Diary, 1747). When we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, we are reminded that the Holy Spirit guides all disciples into the Truth and the existence of sin, righteousness and judgment (See Jn 16:8-13). St. Faustina admits that humility is required to know God. In humility we know the depths of our misery and recognize the immensity of the mercy of God and grow in our love for God. When the soul accepts its needs and nothingness, God grants it much light and happiness (See Diary, 56, 593). A true disciple can transcend selfishness and turn to God in penance, in prayer and in service to others. Mary was never unfaithful to the slightest inspirations of the Holy Spirit, and that she cooperated to the fullest extent with all the graces that were given her. It is only through purity and holiness that we can prevail with God. He hears only the innocent or the pardoned. by Shirley Oleskiw Page 7
Mercy of God Miracles A miracle is an extraordinary fact, perceptible to the senses, which exceeds all powers of nature and can be produced solely by God. Since God is the Author of the laws of nature, He produces something that goes beyond the laws which He established. It does not change the will of God because it was foreseen and decreed from all eternity. Miracles are a seal of God impressed on revealed truth. They are God s signature to signify that He acknowledges a certain teaching as His own. Since God is all holy, He could not put His signature and seal to a lie. Therefore, if someone teaches a doctrine, as revealed by God and performs miracles in confirmation of His doctrine, this teaching is certainly revealed. False religions can also claim the existence of miracles, but they do not have to prove their authenticity. Scripture relates many miracles wrought by the patriarchs and prophets by the Divine power. Moses led the Israelites through the Red Sea, Elijah brought down fire, and Elisha cured the sick and raised the dead. In the New Testament many miracles were performed by Jesus Himself, or the Apostles in His Name (Acts 9:34ff); The greatest number of miracles was wrought by Our Lord during His earthly life. He Himself said to the disciples of John the Baptist, Go and report to John what you have heard and seen: the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise (Matt. 11:4-5). The glorious Resurrection was the greatest miracle of Our Lord in regards to which St. Paul says: And if Christ has not risen, vain is our faith (Cor. 15:17). The continued existence and growth of the Church despite all adversities for so many ages is truly His greatest miracle since the Resurrection, with the sublime celebration of the Eucharist as a continuous and miraculous multiplication of the Angelic Bread and pouring out of graces. Our Lord continues to work miracles in His saints. His servants have performed and still perform them in the Catholic Church to this day. The infinite Mercy of God is the source of all miracles which have been performed through the intercession of St. Faustina at the Divine Mercy Shrine in Poland and now at our Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy Chapel here in Regina. On a daily basis we are shown the power of God through His humble Saint. The number of miracles that has taken place here are endless, but we know and have learned that If one trusts in God completely all for any miracle is possible. Come and experience the mercy of God for yourself. Truly God is good! by Shirley Oleskiw Page 8
Intellectual Faith and Living Faith Work to Become Holy with St. Faustina There is a vast difference between an intellectual faith and a living faith. Catholics are taught that the consecrated Host is the Body of Christ. We hear this at every Mass. The problem is we can t see Jesus, we only see the Host, which is the hidden Jesus, and requires faith. If we believe that the consecrated Host is the Body of Christ and the wine has become the Blood of Christ we have an intellectual faith, knowing that it is so. We need to ask Jesus, beg Him to let us feel His presence, to let us believe that He is alive in the Host, that He is a living Person who has feelings and who thinks about us. This is living faith. Jesus told St. Faustina, When I steeped myself in prayer, I was transported in spirit to the Chapel, where I saw the Lord Jesus, exposed in the Monstrance. In place of the Monstrance I saw the glorious face of the Lord, and He said to me, "What you see in reality, these souls see through faith. Oh, how pleasing to Me is their great faith! You see, although there appears to be no trace of life in Me, in reality it is present in its fullness in each and every Host. But for Me to be able to act upon the soul, the soul must have faith. O how pleasing to Me is living faith! (Diary, 1420). At each Holy Communion let us strive to maintain our living faith, praying to Jesus, talking to Him, telling Him how much we love Him. It is so easy to slip back to just an intellectual faith. In Saint Faustina s spiritual life, the fruits born from the reception of the Eucharist were proportionate to her efforts and preparation before every Holy Communion. Let us do what Saint Faustina did to increase her faith, she contemplated the mystery of Jesus sacrifice made present in the Eucharist and this led her to assume a sacrificial attitude, that of offering herself in union with Jesus for the salvation of souls. She would decide before Mass began what short exclamatory prayer she would say to Jesus when she received Him in the Eucharist. For instance: Jesus, I love You, or My Lord and My God. Also, upon receiving the Eucharist, we can practice pondering Jesus dwelling in us to deepen our sensitivity to His presence. We can rejoice that Jesus, our God, is in us, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity (CCC, 1374) for 10 minutes or so, after we have consumed Him in the consecrated Host. It is similar to when the Blessed Virgin Mary carried Jesus in her womb. He is really in us, living in us. Let us talk to Him and try to be aware of His messages to us. Saint Faustina upon receiving the Eucharist, said, Jesus, Host, whom I have this very moment received into my heart, through this union with You I offer myself to the heavenly Father as a sacrificial host, abandoning myself totally and completely to the most merciful and holy will of my God (Diary, 1264). Let us follow the example that Saint Faustina left for us. by Shirley Oleskiw Page 9
St. Faustina and the Eucharist St. Faustina was not only the apostle but also the secretary of God s Mercy. That is why she recorded in her Diary the importance of the Holy Eucharist and the importance of receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. She had such a devotion to the Eucharist that she added to her name of the Blessed Sacrament. She knew that her existence was based on receiving the Eucharist. Jesus told St. Faustina: Eternal life must begin already here on earth through Holy Communion. Each Holy Communion makes you more capable of communing with God throughout eternity (Diary, 1811). Despite her failing health, she offered her suffering and sacrifices for Jesus, for reparation of sinners and to save souls. In the last months of her life she was very ill, and her adoration took the form of verse, of rhyme and rhythm. Below are some of her expressions of her own inner harmony: My heart is drawn there where My God is hidden, Where He dwells with us day and night, Clothed in the white Host; He governs the whole world, He communes with souls. My heart is drawn there where my God is hiding, Where His love is immolated. But My heart senses that the living water is here; It is my living God, though a veil hides Him (Diary, 1591). Here are more verses with the same theme God concealed in the Eucharist. O You who are hidden, Body, Soul and Divinity, Under the fragile form of bread, You are my life from Whom springs an abundance of graces And for me, You surpass the delights of heaven. When You unite Yourself with me in communion, O God, I then feel my unspeakable greatness, A greatness which flows from You, O Lord, I humbly confess, And despite my misery, with Your help, I can become a saint (Diary, 1718). Her Diary becomes a dialogue, in which the words of Jesus thread through her own prayerful utterances. God speaks to us through them, and St. Faustina is the interpreter of His love. by Shirley Oleskiw Page 10
Let Us Love God I Am the Lord, thy God...showing Mercy unto many thousands, to them that love me, and keep My Commandments (Deut.5:10) Our love for God is one of the chief motives which prompts Him to bestow His mercy on us. While our trust leads us to the foot of the mountain of God s mercy, love discovers its peak and brings back from it tokens of infinite Mercy for our souls. Our love of God is a heavenly fire which shapes our every virtue, imparting to them a value with which eternal life is merited. It is the first and greatest commandment in which all others are contained. We are created to love God, and for this reason alone He endowed us with intellect and will. Love of God, then, is our start, our means and our final end. Does a father expect his children to be hard-hearted? Does God not require from us, His intelligent creatures, a tender tribute of love? Love is not only the essence, but also the summary of our perfection and the queen of all virtues: Love God, says St. Augustine, and do whatever you will. The object of love is that good in which we find delight. The object of the theological virtue of love is God as the greatest Good. Goodness is the infinite perfection of His nature, embracing any existing perfection in the highest degree. God, as Goodness, may either be considered as good for us, from whose Mercy we receive gifts and graces, or as Good in Himself, worthy of the highest love and delight, regardless of whether we consider Him to be such or not. In the former case this love is desire and in the latter it is benevolence. In the latter case, we love God, not because He shows Mercy towards us, but because He Himself is Goodness, Truth and Beauty. Such love is perfect love. On the other hand, loving God on account of His benefits, though it is a foundation for the theological virtue of hope, is imperfect love. However, this imperfect love which arises from meditating on and understanding the benefits of the infinite Mercy of God tends to perfect love, which is love of God purely and simply because He is Good. (Cont d on page 12) Page 11
Pray for Simplicity and Humility Jesus said to Saint Faustina, Sister, let simplicity and humility be the characteristic traits of your soul. Go through life like a little child, always trusting, always full of simplicity and humility, content with everything, happy in every circumstance. There, where others fear, you will pass calmly along, thanks to this simplicity and humility. Remember this, Sister, for your whole life: as waters flow from the mountains down into the valleys, so, too, do God's graces flow only into humble souls. (Diary, 55) Humiliation is my daily food. I understand that the bride must herself share in everything that is the groom's; and so His cloak of mockery must cover me, too. Poppies on Remembrance Day One of the most asked questions is: why poppies? The answer is simple: poppies only flower in rooted up soil. Their seeds can lie on the ground for years and years, and only when someone roots up the ground, they will sprout. There was enough rooted up soil on the battlefield of the Western Front; the whole front consisted of churned up soil. So in May 1915, when McCrae wrote his poem, a r o u n d h i m p o p p i e s blossomed like no one had ever seen before. In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies grow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, loved, and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders fields. Page 12
All Saints Day, November 1 On this day all the Saints of the Church, known and unknown are honoured. Under the doctrine of the Communion of Saints it states, (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1475), the Saints in heaven can intercede for us on earth and also for the suffering souls in purgatory. In the Diary Saint Faustina told us that her mission would continue after her death and that she would not forget us (Diary, 281, 1582). Jesus told her to distribute graces as you will, to whom you will, and when you will (Diary 31). Let us pray to her and ask her intercession. All Souls Day, November 2, Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed All Souls Day falls on November 2 and is an important Feast Day. We, as members of the militant church here on earth, can help the suffering souls in purgatory. They must rely on others. They cannot help themselves, or pray for themselves as their time to earn merit is over. We can pray for them and offer Masses on their behalf. From the beginning the Church has honoured the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead (CCC 1032). Jesus said to Saint Faustina when dictating the Novena to the Divine Mercy, the Eighth Day: Today bring to Me the souls who are in the prison of Purgatory, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice (Diary, 1226) by Shirley Oleskiw Page 13
Why Pray to the Saints? The saints in heaven can act as our mediators and help us here on earth. Special devotions to particular saints can bring us closer to God. The Catechism of the Catholic teaches, In the Communion of Saints, a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things. In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits others, well beyond the harm that the sin of one could cause others. Thus recourse to the Communion of Saints lets the contrite sinner be more promptly and efficaciously purified of the punishments for sin. CCC #1475,). Memorial of the Presentation of Mary November 21 is the Memorial of the Presentation of Mary. This feast originated in the year 543. It is associated with an event recounted not in the New Testament, but in the apocryphal Infancy Narrative of James. Mary s parents, Joachim and Anne, who had been childless, received a heavenly message that they would bear a child. In thanksgiving for the gift of their daughter, they brought her to the Temple in Jerusalem to offer her to God in fulfillment of a vow. They left her there to serve God. The "Liturgy of the Hours," for November 21 on the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, states: "we celebrate that dedication of herself which Mary made to God from her very childhood under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit who filled her with grace at her Immaculate Conception." Mary is Mother of Christ, Mother of the Church and our Mother. We can call on her for help. Because of Mary s singular cooperation with the action of the Holy Spirit, the Church loves to pray in communion with the Virgin Mary, to magnify with her the great things the Lord has done for her, and to entrust supplications and praises to her (CCC 963, 2682 The Feast entered the Western Calendar in Today the feast celebrates the recognition of Mary as a temple where God lives.
