1 NEWSLETTER THE ACTING DEAN WRITES... Normally we look forward to the month to come, but a backward glance is necessary to celebrate the wonderful crop of deacons and priests whose ordinations we celebrated at the start of July. It was truly encouraging to see their commitment and to know that next year the numbers will be even greater. Canon Mark continues this theme on page 4. This was followed a week later by the first Stonemasons Festival. Eighteen masons from institutions around the country came together to demonstrate their craft and engage in friendly competition. The sculptures created over the weekend on the theme of From Romanesque to Grotesque were auctioned to fund the next festival in 2018, for which there was much enthusiasm. Congratulations to our apprentice Alex Waddell, who won third prize for his mad monk. You can find out more about the festival on pages 6 & 7. August is a month for the Cathedral to take a breather between the festivities of July and the beginning of the choral year in September. We are very grateful that our visiting choirs use their own holidays to adorn our worship in the interim. Not only is the standard of singing high but the choir members are always happy to chat about their own cultures and perceptions of the UK. While things may be less frenetic, a lot is still happening behind the scenes. Sadly we are losing another chapel, St Alphege s, as work has to be done under the floor in connection with the south transept works. Details of revised service locations are on page 5. 2 CANON ROLY CONTINUES... assured that the Project Board is acutely aware of the frustration and disappointment which can result from pressures of space and is working hard to move things forward as quickly and smoothly as possible. It is a great compensation that the Epiphany Chapel is now being re-lit, and most effectively, thanks to the Government grant we received from the World War I Fund. The Chapel is home to our regular 12 o clock Book of Common Prayer Eucharist. Those who now find it difficult to attend the BCP service at 8am on Sunday make this their regular worship. We have tried to hold this service with the north transept still open for visitors, but the noise of conversation has interrupted and strained the worship. After some experimentation we have decided that the best solution is to close the transept for an hour while the service takes place. Visitors who have come to see the Bible should be able to work around this fairly short closure. Worship must be given the priority in a living church. Over the summer we are offering further opportunities for visiting on Friday and Saturday evenings between 7 and 9pm, with last admission at 8.30pm. This is a splendid time of day to see the setting sun on the glass and to experience the tranquillity of the building (we are not allowing group tours). We are holding no major exhibition this year, but saving it for 2017 when we mark the bicentenary of Jane Austen s death. However, we do have an interesting display by the Gideons, 5-18 August, which includes testimony from those whose lives have been changed by reading the Scriptures - in the past the Gideons have been kind enough to provide several Bibles for our visitors, placed in the Epiphany Chapel as it happens. There is some summer fun to be had also. There are three Outdoor Cinema events between 4th and 6th August. Being a movie fan I know Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Dirty Dancing (a title that bears little relation to the romance that it is), but the musical Labyrinth is a new one on me. It stars David Bowie as a bad goblin, which may be a draw for some! The seating provided ranges from a blanket to director s chair. Finally, may I draw your attention to the Bible Marathon? This is a cover-to-cover reading of the whole Bible taking place in the Cathedral and Wessex Centre over a period of about 75 hours, from Wednesday 7th to Saturday 10th September. By next month it may be too late to sign up; please do so now via canonspa@winchester-cathedral.org.uk. The event is beginning to shape up nicely. At 10am on 7th the marathon will be opened by some celebrity broadcasters. Friday morning is the turn of the Pilgrims School senior boys and Friday night is carried by Christ Church s youth group Download. Somehow or other we shall get the whole Bible read and I have no doubt that great blessing will result from this collaborative spiritual endeavour. Completing the reading is paramount, but adults who take part are invited to give 30 either through sponsorship or by donation, and children 10. This will go to the appeal. Those who can t participate but would like to support the efforts of those who can are welcome to donate directly to the Appeal. As we are now down to the last 900k, we can all feel our efforts are significant in whittling the total down to zero. Canon Roly 2

3 CANON SUE WRITES... This is the time of year when the Cathedral changes into holiday mode and our musicians and choristers go off for a well earned rest. Their achievements this year have been amazing; singing for the Pope in Rome as well as visiting Florence, singing carols on board the cruise ship Queen Victoria, launching a new version of the Winchester Cathedral song (available on itunes) and being wonderful ambassadors for the Cathedral wherever they have travelled. However there are some different delights to look forward to in August. Our bell ringers give their practice times on Wednesday evenings to ringers from around the diocese. This August Alton and Petersfield are practicing on 3 August, Andover district on the 10th, Portsmouth District on the 17th and Christchurch and Southampton district on the 24th before Winchester district rings on the 31st. There will also be some lovely lunchtime recitals in August. Andrew De Silva, one of our Lay Clerks, will be performing on 2 August, Callum Alger will be giving an organ recital on the 9th, Claire Jones will be playing the harp on the 16th, Nicola Hands will be playing the oboe and Cor Anglais on the 23rd and Hannah Innes will be playing the cello on the 30th. All of these recitals are at 1pm and admission will be free with a retiring collection to defray the costs. Several visiting choirs from this country and abroad will lead our worship over the summer. take the third week in August and the choir of St Francis, Welwyn garden City round off the month for us. We are very grateful to each of these groups for leading our worship throughout the summer months and enabling Choral Evensong to continue. I do hope that wherever you travel this Summer you will have safe journeys and a refreshing time, that you will see and hear things that inspire you and bring you joy, and that you will return to your home (wherever it may be) filled with gratitude, grace, and stories to tell others that will gladden their hearts. The Alleyn singers who begin our month were started in They are based in Dulwich and have sung in many different cathedrals. The university of Bristol Church choir who are taking the second week normally sing in St Paul s church Clifton; the choir of Trinity Church Boston in the USA, CHORAL SERVICES IN AUGUST Full details of what and when our visiting choirs will be singing can be found on the service list and website. The Choral Foundation returns on Saturday 10 September. 3

4 VOCATIONS AND ORDINATIONS On Sunday 3 July we witnessed sixteen people being admitted to the order of deacon here in the Cathedral. As Canon Principal of the School of Mission, responsible for the discerning of vocations and training people for ministry, it was an honour to stand alongside the Archdeacon for Mission Development, the Venerable Paul Moore, as he affirmed to the Bishop that these people have been found to be of godly life and sound learning. There is much to celebrate with these ordinations. First, we celebrate that there are sixteen deacons, more than in some other years. You may not be aware but the Church of England is hurtling towards a human resources cliff edge. Over 40% of clergy will be retiring within the next 8-10 years, and even if the number of deacons increases by 50%, overall numbers of clergy across the country will still decrease. I don t believe that God isn t calling enough people to serve in ordained ministry. I think people don t know how to respond to God s call. Jesus tells us to pray, asking the Father to send more workers into his harvest field. We have prayed that, and sixteen more joined in that work. We need to pray that the Lord of the harvest will call even more workers into ordained ministry and those called will respond in faith. Second, we celebrate that the Lord calls people from many different backgrounds. This year s deacons are mums and dads, lawyers and doctors, artists and business people, all men and women of God. Some are younger and some are older. Since arriving here I have met some people who have heard the call of God for decades, and keep putting off a response, only to find that in later life they have missed out on God s call. This is really sad. Responding to God s call is the best possible thing you can do in life. If you want help discerning God s call 4 contact our Vocations Adviser, Revd Dr Marcus Throup, on vocations@winchester.anglican.org or Third, God doesn t just call some to ordained ministry. All the baptised people of God are called to join in the mission of God. We celebrate that we couldn t stage an ordination service here without the many volunteers who offer their service, often unsung, and behind the scenes. If God is nudging you to join in any of the thirty or so volunteer ministries speak to Sarah Williams in the Cathedral office. In June the Diocesan Synod passed a whole raft of measures that enable us to train people for further lay ministries. These formational programmes will lead to participants receiving the Bishop s Commission for Mission. The first will start in the autumn with a six week programme in Pastoral Mission. If you think pastoral visiting might be something you re interested in, please do speak me. It is our honour as the mother church of the Diocese for the Cathedral to host these significant transition points in people s lives. 5 NEWS THE ST ALPHEGE CHAPEL As Canon Roly mentions on page 1, this Chapel will be closed from Monday 25 July to Sunday 25 September for building works under the floor in connection with the south transept works. Morning Prayer from Monday to Saturday will be held in the Epiphany Chapel, and the 8am Holy Communion on a Monday will be held in the Guardian Angels Chapel. The 8am Holy Communion on a Wednesday will be held in the Retroquire. THERE S A ZEBRA IN THE CATHEDRAL GIFT SHOP RIDE & STRIDE 2016 This is in aid of Hampshire and the Islands Historic Churches Trust, with half we raise coming back to the Cathedral Appeal. This year s Cathedral events will take two forms: a round-winchester-churches walk (on Saturday 10 September); and the Itchen Way over two days (Friday 9th, Cheriton to Winchester and Saturday 10th, Southampton to Winchester). You will be very welcome! No, this is not the start of the silly season, there really is! Marwell Wildlife has launched a Zany Zebras Trail (large zebra sculptures decorated by artists) through Southampton and at the wildlife park for 10 weeks. Winchester BID has sponsored an additional 25 mini plain zebras for Winchester giving them to businesses and organisation to be decorated and displayed for the same period. Children s Church was given a zebra, which one of their members, Hermione Killian-Dawson, was inspired by the Cathedral's history and beauty to paint, incorporating images from the Cathedral's icons, stained glass and mosaic floor. The recently named Zachariah will be in the Gift Shop until the end of September. STILL GETTING NOTICED..? - Saturday 24 September, 2pm 5pm Last September over 100 church communicators from around the Diocese gathered in what was then called the new Learning Centre for an afternoon to share experiences. Following on from last year s very successful event, we are again inviting church communicators to participate in an afternoon of networking and practical support for the role they undertake. Hosted by former journalist, TV presenter and now Lay Canon and Licensed Lay Minister, Debbie Thrower, the event will feature presentations from and discussions with: Craig Philbrick Currently helping UNISON with their digital engagement and a specialist in social media and campaign development for Christian charities, Luther Pendragon who provide the Diocese of Winchester with a full range of communications support, Stella Wiseman the newly appointed Marketing and Content Editor for the Diocese of Winchester, the Rev d Nicky Davies Journalist and Publications Officer for the Diocese of Exeter and Self Supporting Minister in the Diocese of Winchester. 6 THE GREAT BRITISH FLAKE OFF Visitors to the Cathedral over the weekend 8/10 July could have been forgiven for thinking they d stepped back in time as found themselves in amongst a team of 17 stonemasons competing in their centuries-old craft. By lunchtime on Sunday the results were spectacular and the event concluded with the works being judged and then auctioned. There were honours for Winchester as Ross Lovett, a former Winchester Cathedral mason, took first place and Alex Waddell, one of our current apprentice masons (pictured right) took third place for his mad monk. Joined by Tristan Delpouve from Lincoln Cathedral, who took second place, they all received prizes in the form of Gibson tool vouchers kindly sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Masons. Our Stonemasonry Festival was the first of its kind for Winchester Cathedral, bringing together cathedral masons from Winchester, Durham, Gloucester, Canterbury, Salisbury, Exeter, Lincoln and York Minster, as well as several freelance stonemasons. Central to the event was a stone carving competition, themed Romanesque to Grotesque, tapping into the medieval architectural style of the old English cathedrals as well as offering the masons scope to express a little of the weird and wonderful. On Friday each mason was presented with a 50cm square block of Bath stone, they interpreted the theme in their own unique way, and got cracking. Many of the visitors were intrigued by what they saw, often hidden up scaffolding or in dusty workshops and some even had a go, including some budding new talent! 6

7 OUR FIRST STONEMASONRY FESTIVAL A highlight for many was seeing Will Davies work on a new statue which will soon be positioned on the highest point of the south transept roof. The facial features of the statue are those of the Dean, who retired on 14 July! Will said it s a great privilege to know that our work, and this sculpture, will likely be part of the Cathedral for centuries to come. 7

8 Over the weekend 22/24 July, many members of our community joined our choir and clergy in the annual Southern Cathedrals Festival. A celebration of music, worship and fellowship with the Cathedral Choirs of Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester which, this year, was in Chichester. 11 RINGERS TRIBUTE TO HMS HAMPSHIRE Some of us will know already of the inscription on the corner of the county war memorial outside the west front of the Cathedral, recording the loss of 737 lives when HMS Hampshire sank off Orkney on 5 June 1916 (pictured below). On the l00th anniversary of this date a quarter peal was rung by a band of Hampshire ringers in commemoration. Hampshire s loss followed shortly after the Battle of Jutland that had claimed a total of 6,784 British sailors. HMS Hampshire was one of six Devonshire class armoured cruisers built for the Royal Navy in the first decade of the 20th century. Immediately after the battle, she was ordered back to Scapa Flow to carry Lord Kitchener on a diplomatic mission to Russia. Due to the gale-force conditions, her destroyer escorts were ordered back to Scapa and sailing alone in heavy seas, Hampshire struck a mine off Marwick Head, one of several laid a week earlier by a German submarine. The detonation holed the cruiser between bows and bridge, and the lifeboats were smashed against the side of the ship by the heavy seas when they were lowered. About 15 minutes after the explosion, Hampshire sank by the bow. Kitchener and his staff were lost along with all but 12 of the crew. A memorial to Kitchener was erected on the headland and this year an appeal was launched to record, there the names of all the crew who lost their lives that day. In 1916 up in the Cathedral belfry on 22 June, tower captain Wilfred Andrews recorded in his meticulously kept belfry diary, that a special service was held at Winchester Cathedral for the men who died on Hampshire, with six bells rung half-pull and stand 65 times for the death of Lord Kitchener. The quarter peal, 1296 Stedman Caters was rung by 10 ringers, including 5 of the Cathedral s own band. Colin Cook 11

She was buried in the north aisle of the Cathedral.
