3 March 18, 2018 MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR T he litany of Saint Joseph recognizes his many roles in God s plan of salvation: Illustrious descendant of David, light of the patriarchs, spouse of the Mother of God, model of the working person, guardian of virgins, consoler of the afflicted, hope of the sick, patron of the dying, terror of demons, protector of the Holy Church. One way for us to be closer to St. Joseph is to think about his example of faith, hope and love. Saint Joseph was a truly humble man so he was able to remain steadfast in his faith through every trial. Whether it was the unexpected pregnancy of Mary, the persecution of King Herod, or the loss of the child Jesus in the Jerusalem temple, Joseph knew how to see God in everything that happened. Saint Joseph s hope grew as he awaited the fulfillment of God s promises of Redemption. This no doubt came into play as he saw the child Jesus grow into manhood. Joseph sensed the unfolding of the mission of Jesus as the Messiah. Saint Joseph had a very sincere love for Jesus and Mary and it became deeper every day. Fr Fernandez writes that no one will ever love them as he loved them. Joseph demonstrated his love for Jesus and Mary in his family life, in his prayer and in the ordinary events of his working day. Pope Paul VI in 1969 spoke about the importance of the sanctification of daily life, the sanctification which each person must acquire according to his or her own state, and one which can be promoted according to a model (St Joseph) who is accessible to all people: St Joseph is the model of those humble ones that Christianity raises up to great destinies.. He is the proof that in order to be a good and genuine follower of Jesus there s no need of great things it is enough to have the common, simple and humble virtues but they need to be true and authentic Let us remember how God worked in the life of St Joseph. God will work in us too as we seek to cooperate with Him as Joseph did: O blessed Joseph, happy man whose privilege it was, not only to see and hear that God who many a king has longed to see, yet saw not, longed to hear, yet heard not; but also to carry him in your arms and kiss him, to clothe him and watch over him! Pray for us, blessed Joseph (Roman missal, Prayers before Mass) This Lent, Development and Peace Caritas Canada, launched its 51 st annual Share Lent campaign entitled Together for Peace. Since the organization s founding in 1967, money donated annually by Catholics in Canada during Share Lent provides essential support to the poorest populations of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Development and Peace supports 173 partners and 194 projects in 46 countries around the world. Consider making Share Lent a part of your family s Lenten journey. Perhaps you can give up some desserts at family meals and then use the money that is saved along with prayer towards part of your Share Lent contribution. The Share Lent collection will be taken up after communion at all Sunday Masses this weekend. But you can still contribute next Sunday as well to Share Lent. Pope Francis recently celebrated his 5 th year of serving as Pope. Please keep him in your prayers that God will continue to bless his health and his ministry. Our Cathedral parish has been working with the Canadian government to sponsor one of the refugees from Syria. She is a single woman who is the sister of one of our parishioners. We just received news that she will be arriving in Vancouver on April 4 th. We are looking for accommodation for her: a modest room to rent with the use of a kitchen and bathroom. Please call the parish office if you know of such a room opportunity. On the 5 th Sunday of Lent the practice of many Catholic churches is to cover the statues. This is not meant to make them look strange but to build up the sense of drama as we approach Holy Week. This can lead us to ponder more deeply the work and graces of Jesus. Fr. Galvon 3

4 March 18, 2018 C AT H E D R A L N E W S A R C H D I O C E S E N E W S Cardinal Tagle in Vancouver, March 19 Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, the Archbishop of Manila, will celebrate Mass at Holy Rosary Cathedral on Monday, March 19 at 12:30 pm (in lieu of the usual 12:10 Mass). Later that evening, he will give a public address at Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. The evening will begin with an opening performance at 6 pm followed by an opening address by Archbishop Miller and a talk by Cardinal Tagle. Tickets are still available through Ticketmaster. Pues Cristo Jesu s es uno, pero puede ser considerado y lo es realmente como apretada gavilla, por cuanto contiene en sí a todos los creyentes, con una unio n preferentemente espiritual. De lo contrario, co mo por ejemplo hubiera podido escribir san Pablo: Nos ha resucitado con Cristo Jesu s y nos ha sentado en el cielo con e l? Siendo e l uno de nosotros, comulgamos con e l en un mismo cuerpo y, mediante la carne, hemos conseguido la unio n con e l.
