We wait for PEACE that will end war and everything that leads to war: anger, revenge, hatred, greed and prejudice. December 12: In the Bleak Mid-winter - The Birth of our Saviour WHITE GIFT UPDATE This year s White Gift response has been wonderful, with just about every gift tag taken from the tree over the past two weeks. The White Gifts will be delivered this Saturday, December 16th. So, if you have not yet brought in your White Gift purchase, please drop it off at the Church this coming week. Thank You! DECORATING THE CHURCH Your help is needed on December 15th starting at 10 am. If you can spare an hour or two (or more) please come to the church on Friday the 15th to join a team of church mice who will be decorating the church, chapel and the hall in preparation for the Christmas season. CHURCH ENVELOPES FOR 2018 AND THE ADVENT/CHRISTMAS LETTERS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PICK-UP TAIZÉ THURSDAYS IN ADVENT Please join us in the Cathedral Thursday, December 14 at 5:30pm -- and at the same time on the following Thursday in Advent -- for a simple and meditative prayer period in the style of Taizé. Through the use of repeated phrases, music, silence, scripture, a short witness, and intercessory prayers, participants will be invited to stillness and to listen for the voice of God. 4 Second Sunday of Advent Collect Almighty God, who sent your servant John the Baptist to prepare your people to welcome the Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of your truth, to turn our disobedient hearts to you, that when the Christ shall come again to be our judge, we may stand with confidence before his glory; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Epistle 2 Peter 3:8-15a But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord s patience means salvation

5 Gospel Mark 1: 1-8 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way a voice of one calling in the wilderness, prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message: After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.
