NEW YEAR S EVE 2017 IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH AND UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER 2104 Bob Billings Parkway Lawrence, KS immanuellawrence.org immanuellutheran@ilcandusc.org 1
INTRODUCTION At the turn of the year we meditate on endings and beginnings, knowing that all the world's time begins and ends in God. We watch and keep vigil for the coming of God's justice. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC GATHERING HYMN Hymn 899 Across the Sky the Shades of Night, stanzas 1-4 Stand, as you are able. INVOCATION P: Blessed be the Holy One of Israel, the Word made flesh, the Power of the Most High, one God, now and forever. CONFESSION P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. P: Gathered in the name of Jesus, let us confess our sin against God and our neighbor. Silence is kept for reflection. P: Gracious God, C: in Christ Jesus you come among us as light shining in darkness. We confess our failure to welcome this light. Forgive us and renew our hope, so that we may live in the light of your grace, and welcome the truth of Christ the Lord. Amen. P: I bring you good news of great joy for all the people: To you is born a Savior, Christ the Lord. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. HYMN VERSE Hymn 899 Across the Sky the Shades of Night, stanza 5 2
Then, gracious God, in years to come, we pray your hand may guide us, and, onward through our journey home, your mercy walk beside us until at last our ransomed life is safe from peril, toil, and strife when heav n itself shall hide us. Words: James Hamilton, Public domain. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Eternal God, you have placed us in a world of space and time, and through the events of our lives you bless us with your love. Grant that in the new year we may know your presence, see your love at work, and live in the light of the event that gives us joy for-ever the coming of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Sit FIRST READING Jeremiah 24:1-7 P: A reading from Jeremiah. The LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed before the temple of the LORD. This was after King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon had taken into exile from Jerusalem King Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim of Judah, together with the officials of Judah, the artisans, and the smiths, and had brought them to Babylon. One basket had very good figs, like first-ripe figs, but the other basket had very bad figs, so bad that they could not be eaten. And the LORD said to me, What do you see, Jeremiah? I said, Figs, the good figs very good, and the bad figs very bad, so bad that they cannot be eaten. Then the word of the LORD came to me: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so I will regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I have sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans. I will set my eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up, and not tear them down; I will plant them, and not pluck them up. I will give them a heart to know that I am the LORD; and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart. P: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. PSALMODY Psalm 102:24-28 P: O my God, I say, do not take me away C: at the mid-point of my life, P: you whose years endure C: throughout all generations. P: Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth, C: and the heavens are the work of your hands. P: They will perish, but you endure; C: they will all wear out like a garment. P: You change them like clothing, C: and they pass away; P: but you are the same, C: and your years have no end. P: The children of your servants shall live secure; C: their offspring shall be established in your presence. 3
P: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; C: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. SECOND READING 1 Peter 1:22-25 P: A reading from First Peter. Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. For All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord endures forever. That word is the good news that was announced to you. P: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand, as you are able. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION P: Alleluia. O God, you have been our refuge C: from one generation to another. Alleluia. (Psalm 90:1) GOSPEL Luke 13:6-9 P: The holy gospel according to Luke. C: Glory to you, O Lord. Then [Jesus] told this parable: A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil? He replied, Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down. P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sit SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY Hymn 733 O God, Our Help in Ages Past GATHERING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY RECEIVING OF OFFERINGS GATHERING OF ATTENDANCE SHEETS (All members, visitors, and guests are asked to sign the red Record of Fellowship and return it to the end of the row.) HYMN 4
Hymn 738 Lord of All Hopefulness Stand, as you are able. THANKSGIVING FOR THE WORD P: Praise and thanks to you, holy God, for by your Word you made all things: you spoke light into darkness, called forth beauty from chaos, and brought life into being. For your Word of life, O God, C: we give you thanks and praise. P: By your Word you called your people Israel to tell of your wonderful gifts: freedom from captivity, water on the desert journey, a pathway home from exile, wisdom for life with you. For your Word of life, O God, C: we give you thanks and praise. P: Through Jesus, your Word made flesh, you speak to us and call us to witness: forgiveness through the cross, life to those entombed by death, the way of your self-giving love. For your Word of life, O God, C: we give you thanks and praise. P: Send your Spirit of truth, O God; rekindle your gifts within us: renew our faith, increase our hope, and deepen our love, for the sake of a world in need. Faithful to your Word, O God, draw near to all who call on you; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory forever. LORD'S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. 5
BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. SENDING HYMN Hymn 390 Let Us All with Gladsome Voice DISMISSAL P: Go forth into the world to serve God with gladness; be of good courage; hold fast to that which is good; render to no one evil for evil; strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak; help the afflicted; honor all people; love and serve God, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. C: Thanks be to God. POST-SERVICE MUSIC ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: From Sundays and Seasons.com. Copyright 2015 Augsburg Fortress. All rights reserved.
