Anointing of the Sick: The sacrament of the healing is available at any time to all who are seriously ill, hospitalized or preparing for surgery, as well as those of advanced age. Please contact the parish office to make arrangements for the priest to administer the sacrament. If it is an emergency, please call Ext 14. Parish Registration: Is requested of all individual persons and families who worship regularly with us on Sundays and who intend to participate in the life of our parish with their time, talents, and treasures. Matrimony: Contact the parish office at least 6 months before the prospective date. Baptism: Baptism Preparation Class is held on the 2nd Monday of the month at 7:00 PM in the church. Michael Being perceived ready to receive the sacraments is an important step on the road to the Easter Sacraments. Today, we as a parish community celebrate the Rite of Sending with Rose and Sergio Cruz, and children Gianna Baird, Jocelyn Paxon and John Paxon. The community shows their support by recognizing the growth in faith and service of these catechumens and as a parish pledge to assist them for the rest of their lives. We send them forth from St. Jude to the Cathedral where they will celebrate the Rite of Election. At the Rite of Election, Bishop Serratelli accepts our Parish s recommendation that the catechumens are well on their way to following Christ and ready for Easter Sacraments. They leave our parish being called catechumen and return now know as The Elect. 3 OPPORTUNITIES FOR INCREASED SPIRITUAL GROWTH DURING OUR LENTEN SEASON GOOD FRIDAY - OBLIGATORY FAST AND ABSTINENCE Good Friday is a day of obligatory fast and abstinence. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all who are 14 years of age and older every Friday in Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Good Friday by all who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Praying the Stations of the Cross is part of the Catholic tradition of devotional prayer. To pray the Way of the Cross requires only that you meditate on the Passion of the Lord before each Station. Stations of the Cross begin Friday, February 16th at 7:00PM in the church and thereafter every Friday evening throughout Lent. WELCOME HOME TO HEALING Welcome Home is a diocesan initiative to invite all Catholics to experience the grace of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is a wonderful opportunity to set aside our sinful ways and to draw closer to our Lord. Confessions will be held every Monday during Lent, February 19th through March 26th from 7:00PM-8:30PM in every Catholic Church in the Diocese of Paterson. SILENCE THROUGHOUT LENT Just a reminder that beginning with Ash Wednesday liturgies February 14th all liturgies through Lent will conclude in silence instead of a closing song. This provides a new way to experience prayer in our lives, and respect for those around us who may wish to remain after liturgy in silent prayer. Therefore, we strive to remain silent until we exit our worship space. OPERATION RICE BOWL As part of our community's observance of Lent, we ask all families to participate in Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl, a program of prayer, fasting, learning, and giving. Please be sure to take home a Rice Bowl packet and follow this simple yet powerful Lenten practice. Packets are available in the church vestibule. Visit for more information. Sign up at PENANCE SERVICE The Lenten Penance Service at St. Jude Church will be held on Monday evening, March 19th at 7:00 PM. All are invited to experience the beauty of God s forgiveness through song, prayer, and reflection. SPECIAL LENTEN PROGRAM A Special Lenten Program will be held on urday, March 10th, A Day of Reflection with Rev. Jude Salus. The Program will begin with Morning Mass at 9:00 AM followed by a Seminar in the Parish Center and will conclude at 12:00 Noon. The cost of the Seminar is $15.00 which will include a full hot/cold breakfast. A sign up sheet will be in the Narthex of the Church. FAITH FORMATION MOVIE NIGHT th The 8 Grade St. Jude s Parish Faith Formation class invites every member of the community to join us for a movie night. This night is being offered to promote peace and unity in our community. Please come out and support our 8 th Grade Peace Project. All proceeds from snacks will go to Save The Children Charity which is an organization that ensures refugee children are growing up healthy, educated, and safe. 5 THE CHAIR OF ST. PETER Once Ash Wednesday arrives, people who are fortunate enough to be able to attend daily Mass just expect to see the priest dressed in the Lenten purple, but, on Thursday, February 22nd, the church pauses from the purple and celebrates the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter, Apostle. This feast brings to mind the mission of teacher and pastor conferred by Christ on Peter, and continued in an unbroken line down to Pope Francis. Although the feast celebrates a much deeper purpose, yes, there is a physical object known as "the Chair of St. Peter." It is housed at the Vatican, at the back of St. Peter's basilica. The term Chair of St. Peter means both the physical object--an ancient, ornamented chair--located in the apse of St. Peter's Basilica, but more importantly, the spiritual authority that this chair represents. This physical chair--known as the Cathedra Petri (Latin, "Chair of Peter")--is located in the apse of St. Peter's Basilica. It is in the back of the chamber, behind the famous altar, on the far, back wall, below the stained glass image depicting the Holy Spirit as a dove. This ancient chair has been repaired and ornamented over time. The Catholic Encyclopedia states of the original chair: The seat is about one foot ten inches above the ground, and two feet eleven and seven-eighths inches wide; the sides are two feet one and one-half inches deep; the height of the back up to the tympanum is three feet five and one-third inches; the entire height of the chair is four feet seven and one-eighth inches. The Encyclopedia goes on to state that there is no reason to believe that this piece of furniture is not the chair in which St. Peter, himself, sat. However, Pope Benedict was more reserved in offering such acclamation to the object. The word cathedra means the established seat of the Bishop, placed in the mother church of a diocese, and thus the term used for the church of the bishop - the cathedral - where the chair of his office is located. The first reading of the day exhorts not only ordained ministers, but all of us in leadership roles to shepherd the flock of Christ. Even the responsorial psalm is from the theme of the day, focusing on the relationship between God as the ultimate shepherd of our souls and each of us as the individual members of his flock. The gospel is the passage from which Christ states Thou are Peter and upon this rock. We have been instructed, that the pope is infallible (free from making a mistake) any time he speaks ex cathedra. This was declared by the First Vatican Council in So, does that mean the pope needs to wind his way to the ancient chair if he is to make such a decision? No, of course not. Although the pope's infallible pronouncements are called ex cathedra (Latin, "from the chair") statements, he does not have to be sitting in the physical chair (which is rather high off the ground in any case). He simply has to use the fullness of his authority as the successor of Peter, with the power of the Holy Spirit, to definitively establish a teaching on a particular matter pertaining to faith or morals. These declarations are referred to figuratively, as him speaking "from the chair" of St. Peter. There are only two incidents of the pope using this authority. Both declarations are about Mary: Her Immaculate Conception (declared by Pope Pius IX in 1854 and grandfathered in after the First Vatican Council s declaration of papal infallibility in 1870) and her bodily Assumption into heaven (declared by Pope Pius XII in 1950). While declaring someone a Saint (the act of canonization) is a declared fact, unchallenged once declared by the pope, it is not considered ex cathedra as this is not a matter of dogma of faith and morals.
