5 Dear Church Users, This is to ask you to book in/check with the office when you are planning to come into the church to do all your wonderful activities, sacred and secular. This is always a good idea, but more imperative with the lack of Vestry facilities, as there is more likely to be overlap. For instance, Jeff may be meeting people in church rather than in the Vestry or Sacristy. During the Vestry works the church will not be open during office hours. There will also be no entry to the church via the Vestry. If you need to borrow a key, please ask the office. Christian Aid Street Collections - Would you be willing to distribute and collect envelopes in one of our parish streets between 13 th and 19th May? This work is vital to Christian Aid, which depends upon the annual street collections to help the poorest of the world's inhabitants with projects such as access to safe drinking water and the improvement of crop yields. If you can spare a couple of hours to do this, please contact Peter Mence on ; m.p.mence@btinternet.com giving some indication of the venue in which you might like to collect. Food Bank - Due to the extraordinary generous offerings of mens socks and pants the supply at the Vineyard is in a healthy position of having enough for the moment. The Food bank is now in short supply of the following: long life milk, juices, rice, cereals, fish, toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap). They do however have many tins of baked beans! Many thanks for all you have given, it is so much appreciated. Giving to St Mary s - If you wish to give money to St Mary s to help fund its running costs you can now do so by texting a donation in addition to using our established giving schemes. Whilst we do not wish to encourage people to use their mobile phones at all during the service, if you would like to donate this way as you leave the church, or whenever is convenient to you if you cannot be with us on a Sunday, please text STMY12 and the amount to be given to e.g STMY You will receive a text message thanking you and asking if you want to gift aid the donation. and contact details - If you are already on our parish list and have recently changed your contact details, or if you would like to add your name, please use the welcome card from either the pews or the back of church and pass to a sidesperson or churchwarden to ensure that our records are kept up-to-date.
6 From the Archives An occasional article in a series on a topic from the St. Mary s Archives Ted Morris & the Tower pigeons Edward (Ted) Morris wrote several letters in 1991 to Donald Simpson, the first St Mary s archivist, following his request to record as much as he could remember about alterations and repairs during his time as a bell-ringer ( ). The following item is one of many anecdotes relating to the Tower that he recalled and is a topical item as the louvres on the Tower are currently being reinforced yet again. While Assistant Tower-Keeper (in the 1930s), I was asked by the Vicar (Rev. W.P. Cole Sheane, ) to examine the inside of the roof, which no-one other than workmen had visited for years, and report to him on its state from the point of view of dirt, rubbish and pigeons droppings. The amount of the latter was horrifying because for years and years the birds had had completely free access to the Tower and the roof. The Vicar found a London firm specialising in pigeon clearance and he asked me to open up the Tower so that the operation could be undertaken. It was one dark winter evening when the man appeared, with a van, dozens of sacks and a rifle fitted with a telescopic sight and silencer, and he forbade me to follow him into the roof. There was then no electricity up the Tower stairs or in the bell chamber; he had just one powerful torch. Down below I could hear him padding about above, and his frequent muffled shots. Finally he came down with the sack of bodies which he loaded into his van. He then spent a good half hour picking off with deadly aim those pigeons that had been disturbed and were perched on and around the roof. The man told me that the dead birds would be taken to the Zoo next day for food for the animals. The Vicar swore me to secrecy as he did not wish to be confronted by bird lovers. I suppose that the exterminator s fee appeared in the accounts, somewhere or somehow perhaps from the Vicar s Discretionary Fund.
