4 Administration Leadership Night /Pastoral Council September 12, :00PM LSJ s Kateri Hall Members of the commissions and Parish Council will conduct their first meeting of the year. Please Join Us! Outreach From the St. John s Social Justice Committee: So you think you ve never met a refugee. Think again. About 30,000 Omahans arrived here as refugees with many settling in neighborhoods near Creighton. Notice the ethnic businesses like Sudanese restaurants or the Somali taxi driver who picked you up at the airport. About 40 per cent of Creighton s custodians are refugees. St. John s is discerning whether to join the 10 Catholic churches sponsoring refugees through Lutheran Family Services. This week please reflect on the corporal work of mercy to welcome the stranger. A Prayer on Labor Day God our Creator, we are the work of your hands. Guide us in our work, that we may do it, not for self alone, but for the common good. Make us alert to injustice, ready to stand in solidarity, that there may be dignity for all in labor and in labor s reward. Grand this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Community Parish Pancake Breakfast Save the Date!! The Pancake Man is coming to St. John's on Sunday, October 8. He will serve in Kateri Hall (LSJ) from 9am to 1pm. That morning we will be collecting school supplies for the teachers in the Creighton Magis program and books for children and adults at Pine Ridge. Faith Formation - Taken from Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers Registration is now open for the St. John's Youth Religious Education Program for the upcoming academic year. Youth ages 3-14 are invited to join the program which meets on Sunday mornings from 9:00-10:15 am. Creighton students teach the classes (there are still volunteer openings for the upcoming year) and the core components of the program are religious education, faith formation, sacramental preparation and community building, which seek to educate the mind and heart in the Ignatian tradition. Sacramental preparation is offered during 2nd grade for First Reconciliation and Holy Communion and 8th grade for Confirmation. 5 Liturgy Ministry Opportunities Have you been thinking about getting involved in St. John s ministries? Now is the time! We are looking for greeters, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, liturgical assistants, altar servers, bell-ringers, and musicians. Joint Reformation Commemoration Prayer Services To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in a spirit of mutual reconciliation, repentance, and hope, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Omaha and the Nebraska Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran in America are hosting a prayer service at Kountze Memorial Lutheran (2650 Farnam) on Monday, September 11th, at 7:00 p.m. Archbishop Lucas of the Archdiocese of Omaha will preach. Mass of the Holy Spirit Join the Creighton community for the Mass of the Holy Spirit on Wednesday, Sept. 13, beginning at 11 a.m. in St. John s. This tradition in Jesuit higher learning dates to It is a time in which the campus community gathers to thank God for the gifts of creation and salvation, and to seek the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit in the coming academic year. Reflection for September 3, 2017 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped. Jeremiah 20:7 When a woman carries a baby for nine months, and then the baby dies in her arms after birth, do you think she feels betrayed by God? When parents send their children to school, and they are snatched by the hands of death before they get a chance to fall in love, finish school and have families of their own, do you think those parents feel betrayed by God? Have you ever felt as if your efforts were in vain, and questioned if you were on the right path, or if you were making a difference? Yes, I think we can all understand Jeremiah s disillusionment and anger. Although I have never used the words, you duped me, O Lord, I have often found myself saying internally, Lord, I thought you loved me! Why did you let that happen? God s ways are not our ways, and we can t always see the big picture, but somehow that doesn t bring much comfort when we are hurting. Jeremiah is so confident in his relationship with God that he doesn t hold back. Jeremiah is angry, disillusioned and blames God for his suffering, as most of us do when something bad happens in our lives, but rather than bringing the pain to God in prayer, we have the tendency to withdraw from prayer and from the church. God knows our hearts, knows our pains, but there is healing that happens when we speak our pain, feel our anguish and have our moment of crying. After that, we can get back to trusting that God ultimately won t let us fail, and if we fall, we will fall into God s arms where we would be lifted back up. Jesus said, follow me. This invitation doesn t include a promise of a pain-free, stress-free and problem-free life. This invitation is to give up something you hold precious in order to live more fully in divine light. In this week s Gospel, Peter is like all of us, just holding on to a particular idea of who Jesus Christ is, and trying to protect someone he holds dear. Following Christ will involve taking up your cross, no longer thinking of oneself, no longer being preoccupied with material things, and no longer worrying about saving just your physical body. It doesn t just involve the inevitable suffering in some form, but also includes the grace of a life journey sustained and nourished by the presence of the Lord. We must let go, trust God, pick up our cross and follow in faith. This is the condition of true discipleship. Liturgy Children's Offertory Opportunity St. John s invites all the children of the parish to participate in our Sunday Offertory. Starting September 9 th and 10 th children at the time of the collection are welcome to come forward to the altar and place either a food offering or monetary offering in a basket near the altar. The children s offertory will assist the Heart Ministry Food Pantry and hungry children in our neighborhood. Kids, don t forget your food offering.
