5 Focus on Religious Freedom From Catholics For Freedom of Religion Punished for Religious Beliefs in the Military - Part 2 In 2017, USAF Colonel Michael Madrid's law firm demanded that the Air Force rescind Col. Madrid's punishment and attempt to destroy his career or face further legal action. Col. Madrid is a decorated Air Force veteran, former Naval aviator, and a flight surgeon who has served the military for 26 years and is a Christian with traditional beliefs about marriage. In 2014, an Airman who was court-martialed and found guilty of serious misconduct, accused Col. Madrid of making derogatory comments about homosexuality. Col. Madrid denied this charge and submitted to a thorough Air Force investigation which found the allegations unsubstantiated, was cleared of all charges, and the investigation was closed. However, two years later, without any new evidence or new investigation, a new commander, Maj. Gen. McCoy, decided that Madrid had lied in 2014 when he denied making derogatory comments. As a result, he placed a Letter of Admonishment in Col. Madrid's stellar permanent record that now guarantees he will never be promoted to Brigadier General. "Colonel Madrid is the latest victim of extreme political correctness...," said First Liberty Institute. "We are concerned that Maj. Gen. McCoy judged and punished Madrid because he became aware of his traditional religious views. If so, that not only harms the military, it is illegal." 10 Job s cry of hopelessness stands in marked contrast to the hope of those who put their trust in Jesus who heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds. We would have to be living the life of a hermit to close our eyes to the pain and misery of life about us. Our hearts would be of stone not to be moved by a friend s marriage on the rocks, a neighbor s child with a nervous breakdown and the suffering and heartbreak which is the common lot of so many in daily life. The grim pictures on TV of war, famine and children dying of starvation are calculated to shake even the faith of a saint. No wonder many people are forced to the conclusion that it is a punishment from God or that there is no God at all. There is no understanding why good-living people are asked to suffer and carry such heavy crosses. Nothing threatens our confidence in a caring God more than the sight of suffering. The Book of Job is an attempt to come to grips with the problem of human suffering in a brutally direct way. Job, a goodliving religious man is put to the test by God. He is stripped of his wife, family and all his possessions, and is finally struck down with ill health. He is so overcome that he feels there is nothing to live for but misery. For all his deliberations as to why he has to suffer or why God has put his hand down so heavily upon him, Job doesn t come up with any convincing answer to the meaning of his present distress. The truth is that there is no easy answer. Job was not the first person, nor the last, to be baffled by the problem of suffering. Illness and death can be the most trying and important times of our life. Often we neglect God until we are struck down in such a crisis with ill health and have inactivity thrust upon us. When we rise above our despair we go to him looking for his healing grace. We are driven to trust him totally, for there is no other way to face suffering than to realize that it must be part of God s mysterious plan. Sickness forces us to put aside the feverish activity of daily living and focus instead on the home which is offered us by our heavenly Father. There are the occasions which are especially critical, when we have to face up to the hopes and disappointments of life. There is no point in thinking what we might do if our circumstances were different. In the gospel passage Jesus comes to Simon s mother-in-law, stretches out his hand and cures her. Christ gives us no answer about suffering nor does he try to explain why people have to suffer but he showed us the importance of turning suffering into joy. By identifying himself with the sick and the dying even to dying himself on the Cross, Jesus clearly revealed that suffering is part of God s mysterious plan. It all depends on how we shoulder our cross, for, by uniting our trials with Christ s we can enjoy his victory. Whatever happens to us, all things will work together for those who love God and share in the passion of Christ. The gospel does not guarantee our freedom from suffering but gives us the assurance that God is with us however great our suffering may be.

15 Have you ever considered becoming an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion? Purpose: This ministry exists to assist the priests of the parish in the distribution of Communion. Many members of this ministry also take Communion to the homebound, so that our homebound parishioners may partake of Holy Communion at least once a week. Activities/Responsibilities: Eucharistic Ministers serve at Mass on Sundays, Weekday Mass and Holy Days of Obligation through out the year. Background: With the shortage of priests, the laity is needed to assist where possible in the mission of the Church. One of the Corporal Works of Mercy (to visit the sick) is borne out by making Holy Communion available by those unable to attend Mass. By taking them communion, sharing some of the scripture readings and or homily for that Sunday, giving them a copy of the church bulletin, and engaging in small talk and listening to their concerns, they are connected to the parish community even though they cannot be present physically. Requirements: Training for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion is required for all those who are interested. The pastor (Fr. Seán) will send a letter to the Bishop on behalf of those interested and they will then attend a Diocesan Training Session. Upon successful completion, they will be commissioned and begin their service/ministry to St. Joseph s parish. The minimum age for Eucharistic Ministers is 18. Commitment: Most Ministers commit to a two-year term of service, renewable at the discretion of the Pastor. 16 Have you ever considered becoming a Lector? Purpose: Lectors proclaim the Good News of Salvation to the parish community, striving to present it as a friend of St. Paul s in Corinth in biblical times might have done; as a letter from a very special friend, about a topic very important to all. Activities: Each lector proclaims about once every 2-3 weeks on Sundays, Weekday Mass and Holy Days of Obligation. Lectors prepare themselves to proclaim the scriptures by meditating on the readings during the week prior to their assignment. This meditation is facilitated by using the workbook provided to all lectors. The workbook contains the readings, historical and contextual notes, tips on proclaiming the passage, and a pronunciation guide for difficult biblical words. Background: The scriptures recount the relationship between God and His people through many centuries. The three readings and the Psalms proclaimed at Mass are selected by the church to present a common theme, message, or lesson. Since the Lector proclaims not just any word, but the Word of God, it is essential that they develop the skills required to communicate God s message competently. The ministry of the lector calls for a person to grow in a warm and loving knowledge of Scripture, the living word of God. Responsibilities: Completion of Diocesan Training Session; training and preparation of the readings for your assigned Mass; acquainting oneself with the Prayer of the Faithful/Pulpit Announcements when you arrive for your scheduled assignment. Commitment: To qualify, a lector must be a member of the parish, at least a high school junior (11 th grade), and have public reading skills. A 3-year commitment is requested to coincide with the 3-year lectionary cycle developed by the Church. Participants are required to attend a training workshop held once each year (See below). Lectors whose commitments limit them to a particular Mass are accommodated; others are rotated through each of the weekend masses.
