1 Exodus The Tabernacle ~ Part 6 Various Passages Here we are again at the tabernacle. Now that the camel breeder s convention is over, I hope your accommodations have been a little better. The Inner Veil Verses Introduction: Last week we discussed the Tabernacle s coverings. We began our study of the structure proper by reviewing the illustrations to be found in its foundation, the one hundred silver sockets. So once again it is probably appropriate to reiterate the primary messages found in this study of the Wilderness Tabernacle. They are the elements of the gospel; that Christ is incarnate, that He is sinless, and that His death and resurrection are absolutely necessary for people to be saved. We have seen the shed blood of Christ flowing through out the Tabernacle and into all of Scripture. So now let s move on to examine the rest of the Tent of Meeting. 2. The Structure: b. The Boards: We pick up the study by looking at the boards that made up the walls of the Tabernacle. These were made of Acacia, or Shittim wood, just like the brazen altar. The incorruptible wood speaks of the incorruptible humanity, that is, the sinless perfection, of Jesus as a man. Unlike the brazen altar though, the boards are overlaid not with bronze, but with gold. The gold speaks of Christ s deity. Here then we find the dual nature of Christ clearly spelled out. He is both man and God. The aspects of deity and humanity are distinct, but they couldn t be separated without major damage to one or the other. And of course, this is what all cults and religions who reject the incarnation do. They either deny His deity, like Judaism, Islam, etc. or His humanity like Deepak Chopra, and Edgar Cayce who talk about the Christ consciousness.

2 As with brass, gold is also refined by fire, the fire of judgment perfection. Remember, as we previously pointed out, Jesus was perfected in the sense of being completed through His carrying out the work the Father had set before Him, His death and resurrection on the cross. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, It is finished, and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (John 19:30 ESV). As we said last week, it was on the cross that God judged Christ, that is, our sins He was carrying. He was punished in our stead. He suffered judgment so we wouldn t. It is when effort is made to separate the two aspects of the Lord s nature, deity and humanity, that we end up with apostasy of one form or another. The dual nature of Christ also points out that he preexisted His Incarnation. Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made (John 8:58; 1:1, 3 ESV). c. The Bars: There are 15 bars of wood covered with gold. Five bars are on each side and the back. Three of these are extended in length going through the middle in rings from end to end on each side and the back. Twelve short bars are broken down into groups of four, again on each side and the back. The long bars were the beginning and ending of the tabernacle as Jesus is the beginning and the ending of our relationship with the Lord. The beginning; Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (1 Peter 1:3 ESV) and the ending; The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels (Revelation 3:5 ESV). The long boards held the structure together. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together (Col. 1:17 ESV). d. The Pillars: There are three sets of pillars supporting the structure. Sixty surround the building, twenty on each side and ten at each end. They were topped in silver and set in brass sockets. There were five at the eastern end of the Holy Place and four between the Holy and Most Holy Place. At the eastern end the capitals were of gold and the sockets brass. On these hung the Door. He also made a screen for the entrance of the tent, of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, embroidered with needlework, and its five pillars with their hooks. He overlaid their capitals, and their fillets were of gold, but their five bases were of bronze (Exodus 36:37 38 ESV). ) 416 (

3 Between the Holy and Most Holy Places the pillars had no capitals, or tops. They were cut off. The pillars were covered with gold and set in silver sockets. Some see the three sets as speaking of Jesus as He spoke of Himself Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6 ESV). The five pillars in the door are often taken as speaking of the attributes of Christ as identified in His names found in Isaiah. his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6 ESV). Can you see what the problem with this interpretation? The best understanding of the verse takes Wonderful Counselor as one paired name, in which case we have only four names, not five. This is what happens when one overextends the approach to typology analysis. The four pillars having no capitals, that is cut off, can safely be seen as relating to the fact that Christ was cut off, so that we can have access to the Most Holy Place. It is His death that gives us ready access to God. By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth (Isaiah 53:8 9 ESV). The Vail tied to these pillars is a picture of Christ s death as the basis for entry into the Most Holy Place/The Holy of Holies. e. Pins and Cords: The structure of the Tabernacle is secured in place by pins of brass and cords of linen. The pins were pushed into the ground and the cords were passed over the badger skins. The Hebrew word pin can also translated nail as defined in the Key Dictionary of Hebrew Bible ; But Jael, Heber's wife, picked up a tent peg (nail) (Judges 4:21 ESV); and stake Behold Zion, the city of our appointed feasts! Your eyes will see Jerusalem, an untroubled habitation, an immovable tent, whose stakes will never be plucked up, nor will any of its cords be broken. Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes (Isaiah 33:20; 54:2 ESV) Christ is called in Scripture the peg, nail, stake, depending on the translation of the Lord. And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. And I will fasten him like a ) 417 (

4 peg in a secure place, and he will become a throne of honor to his father s house (Isaiah 22:22 23 ESV). Christ applies this Isaiah passage to Himself in Revelation The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens (Revelation 3:7 ESV). Christ then is the one who holds the whole structure of God s salvation program together. This shows His drawing and holding power of us. led them with cords of kindness, with the bands of love, (Hosea 11:4 ESV). For the love of Christ controls us (2 Corinthians 5:14 ESV). 3. The Hangings of the Tabernacle: a. The Door: Now there are actually three entrances into the Tabernacle. The first as we have already seen is the gate to the courtyard. This speaks to Christ as the way. Only through Him can we have access to the Father. Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few (Matthew 7:13 14 ESV) and again Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6 ESV). Now we come to the second hanging, that which is the door to the structure proper. This door pictures Christ as the Truth as seen in the John 14:6 passage. This is because only by passing through Him, that is by accepting Christ can we truly know God. It is only in Christ that God can be worshiped in Truth. This speaks again to what comments we having been making regarding the cults. It is only by accepting the Christ of Scripture, that is the true Christ that we can be saved. The antichrists of the cults can not get anyone to God. Only with the proper sacrifice can one enter into the Tabernacle, into the presence of God. We must keep going back to the fact that the only proper sacrifice is Christ Himself. So Jesus again said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture (John 10:7, 9 ESV). b. The Inner Veil: Now we can proceed two ways. Having entered the Holy Place, passing through the door, we see before us the furniture, and the veil to the Most Holy Place. Now we could next examine the furniture, but instead I d like to finish looking at the hangings of the Tabernacle. Let s discuss the teachings behind the veil. And you shall make a veil of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. It shall be made with cherubim skillfully worked into it. And you shall hang it on four pillars of acacia overlaid with gold, with hooks of gold, on four bases of silver. And you ) 418 (

5 shall hang the veil from the clasps, and bring the ark of the testimony in there within the veil. And the veil shall separate for you the Holy Place from the Most Holy. You shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the Most Holy Place. And you shall set the table outside the veil, and the lampstand on the south side of the tabernacle opposite the table, and you shall put the table on the north side (Ex. 26:31 35 ESV). The inner veil is one of the most important parts of the Tabernacle. It is that which is probably most known by the non-jew, and is talked about through out Scripture. I d like to give you a number of related passages. It is the veil that is shown at the death of Christ. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split (Matthew 27:50 51 ESV) and again And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom (Mark 15:37 38 ESV) and again. while the sun s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two (Luke 23:45 ESV). The whole veil represents the Lord before His crucifixion. Men were separated from God and only once a year, on the Day of Atonement, could the High Priest pass beyond it. He sacrificed for the sins of the people, looking towards the day when Christ would make the final sacrifice for the sins of all men of all ages. The veil was woven with Cherubim which kept man away from the glory of God, just as the Cherubim guarded the entrance to the Garden of Eden. Now the most important item of the Tabernacle was not normally found in it, and that is the rent veil. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split (Matthew 27:51 ESV). As we have already seen, from the Hebrews passage, the rent veil is the picture of the broken body of Christ. It is through His pierced flesh that we have access to God. It is only by accepting His sacrifice men can enter into the Most Holy Place, the place of God s presence. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16 ESV). And of all the symbolism of the Tabernacle this is explained the most clearly as we read Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water (Hebrews 10:19 22 ESV). ) 419 (

6 The veil was approximately 4" thick and was replaced yearly. Tradition tells us that each year it was tied between a team of horses and tested, to show that it couldn t be torn. It is important to note that the veil was rent at the hour of the evening sacrifice. It was at that point our sins were paid for and the way to God was open. Christ died at the time of the sacrifice, because He was that sacrifice. Conclusion: Now we are priests. you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:5 ESV). We have Christ our High Priest. But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:11 12 ESV). And it is through His shed blood and through his body on the cross, the rent veil, that we can now enter the Holy of Holies, God s presence. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water (Hebrews 10:19 22 ESV). So let us never take for granted our opportunity to come into God s presence. Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. (Psalms 95:1 7 ESV). ) 420 (
