It s a blessing that we would all like to ask for again for the long cultural, artistic and scientific work that, in recent years, this Christian Community has carried out, with the responsible cooperation of many convinced and serene believers, including, in a very close way, Professor Antonino Zichichi and his staff. Without Professor Zichichi s commitment we would not have been able to accomplish in this Basilica the artworks that have given and give voice to the Great Alliance between Reason, Faith and Science. May the grace of God s love in Christ today, in this significant and extraordinary event, strengthen the pulsating beat of our hearts and of our journey in the Church. I would now like to call here to give an important message, a Hero of Russia, Deputy Chairman of the Duma, Professor Chilingarov. 43

4 139 Academician Chilingarov is a Hero of Russia for his expedition to the North Pole in a nuclear submarine. This is the man who stepped on the North Pole. And he took part with the Presidents Medvedev and Putin in the inauguration ceremony of the Patriarch of All Rus, Kirill I, in the beautiful Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, in Moscow, destroyed in Soviet times and rebuilt by democratic Russia which has fully recovered its Christian roots. 45

CHILINGAROV I would like to express my heartfelt thanks, I m happy to participate in this Solemn Celebration of the 445th anniversary of the birth of Galileo Galilei. The Patriarch of Russia, Kirill I, blessed me when I told him that I would be here to participate in this Celebration in honour of Galileo Galilei. Today we celebrate the 445th anniversary of the birth of Galileo Galilei, a Man of Faith and the Father of Modern Science. I am very honoured to participate in this Celebration. I would like to thank very much Professor Zichichi who invited me to attend this Solemn Ceremony. Thank you very much Professor Zichichi for organizing a wonderful Exhibition dedicated to Galileo Galilei. 47

8 143 In this Exhibition there are the great scientific achievements of Galileo Galilei and many sentences, so many, in which the Father of Modern Science bears witness of his Faith in God. We absolutely want to bring this Exhibition to Russia. I will speak to the Patriarch of All Rus, Kirill I, in order for this Exhibition to come to the beautiful Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. I believe this Solemn Mass is a very important occasion to bring together all peoples in the name of Galileo Galilei who, by discovering Science, has given us a new source of hope for the triumph in the world of a Great Alliance between Reason, Faith and Science. My respectful greetings and thanks to Pope Benedict XVI, His Eminence Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, His Excellency Monsignor Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, and to the hierarchies of the Catholic Church for this Solemn Mass in the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli e Martiri in Rome.
