Introduction In the Name of the Master offers congregations a thematic approach for communicating the stories of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. To make the worship theme visible and to reinforce the message, each candle of an Advent wreath is assigned a phrase that also serves as the focus for the Words of Preparation and for a Children s Message. These include: First Sunday in Advent A Masterpiece Bears the Name of Its Creator Second Sunday in Advent Isaiah Foretells Everlasting Love Third Sunday in Advent Mary and Joseph Accept Jesus, the Savior Fourth Sunday in Advent The Angel Proclaims Christ, the Lord Christmas Eve or Christmas Day God s Son Names Us as His Own Epiphany Sunday Wise Men Honor the King of Kings Through their participation during the seasons of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, In the Name of the Master will challenge people of all ages to use a Della Robbia Wreath to explore the meanings of the many names of God s Masterpiece, Jesus. 9 Education Learning Activities Della Robbia Wreath Information Although the name Della Robbia is associated with an Italian family of ceramists and sculptors, it is also connected with any object especially Christmas wreaths which are lavishly decorated with a fruit motif. Since the Worship and Nurture sections of In the Name of the Master use a Della Robbia Wreath as the teaching tool for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany celebrations at church, home, and school, share information about the history of the Della Robbia family and offer activities that will help the learners remember the story of this famous symbol. Della Robbia Artists Della Robbia was the name of an Italian family of ceramists and sculptors who lived in Florence in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Luca Della Robbia (Florence, ), the most famous, studied the work of Ghiberti and Nanni di Banco and also learned from the achievements of Donatello. In addition to the excellent quality of his bronze, marble, and stone sculpture, Luca Della Robbia became famous for his invention of a process for making clay terra cotta reliefs and figures permanent by coating them with an enamel glaze. The glazed coating gave the colors of Della Robbia s works a degree of durability impossible for sculpture that was simply painted. Most likely, Luca Della Robbia intended his white enameled terra cotta to have the appearance of polished marble. The ease in shaping the clay compared to marble or stone, however, saved time as well as money. Luca Della Robbia originated glazed terra-cotta bas-reliefs, usually with white figures on a blue ground. Although he initially worked in white and blue, he later added glazes of many colors, especially green and yellow on a wreath of fruits and flowers around the figures. These garlands reflected the great affection and interest for things of nature during this Renaissance period. The spirit in the achievements of the studio is almost entirely Christian. Della Robbia s delicate reliefs were mostly of religious subjects; those of the Madonna and Child are especially notable. His terra-cotta pieces of art were in high demand as devotional images for churches, homes, and outdoor shrines. Luca founded a family workshop, which continued to make fine terra cotta pieces into the sixteenth century. Luca s technique was passed down to his nephew Andrea (Florence ) who specialized in the creation of narrative sculpture. Andrea s three sons, Giovanni (Florence ), Luca II ( ), and Giorlamo ( ) also became skilled terra-cotta sculptors, however, their work was inferior to that of their world-renowned father and uncle. 10 Education Della Robbia Wreaths The term Della Robbia has come to refer to any object that is decorated with fruit. Wreaths of greenery decorated with a variety of fruit have become popular Christmas decorations, extensively used in the exterior enhancements at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. These decorations bear the name of Luca Della Robbia, an Italian Renaissance artist who perfected unique glazes for clay reliefs and embellished his work with a fruit motif. 12 Resources for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany

Education Learning Activities Della Robbia Wreath Instructions Della Robbia Wreath In the Name of the Master, the thematic worship, education, and nurture resource, is based on the use of a Della Robbia wreath a circle of greenery containing a variety of fruit as the teaching tool. Instructions are provided for constructing a wreath, however many seasonal resource books contain variations on this theme. Della Robbia wreaths may also be purchased from a craft store, floral shop, or hobby center. Refer to the Resources section for additional suggestions on making or obtaining a Della Robbia wreath. Materials Apples (red and yellow), 4-6 Berries, 20 sprigs Cherries, 3 Evergreen or silk foliage, 10 sprays Floral tape, green Floral wire, 18 and 30 gauge Needle nose pliers Oranges, 3 Other artificial fruit, 6-10 Pears, 4-6 Pine cones, 4 Pomegranates, 2 Pruning shears Scissors Strawberries, 4 Wire wreath base, 8 diameter Method Create a Della Robbia wreath using bouquets of artificial fruit and silk foliage to convey the abundance and the festivity of the holiday season. Make at least ten bouquets containing one foliage spray, two springs of berries, and two fruits. Keep the back flat. Bind the wires together and clip the ends. Cover the wires with green floral tape. Bind the bouquets to the wreath form. Secure the wire to the base; then wind it around the stem. Alternate directions. Fill in with single stems of fruit or foliage. Wire the pine cones and attach them to the wreath. Resources for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany 13

Education Della Robbia Wreath Candy Centerpiece Materials Candy green spearmint leaves Candy marzipan fruit Cardboard Frosting Glue or double sided tape Knives Pencils Ribbon Scissors Method For each wreath, cut a piece of heavy cardboard into a ten-inch circle. Cut an eight-inch circle out of the center to form the shape of a wreath. Completely cover the cardboard shape with candy green spearmint leaves. If the candy is to be eaten at a later time, use frosting to secure the bottom of each leaf to the base of the wreath. If it is to be used solely as a decoration, use glue or double-sided tape as the fixative. Arrange pieces of marzipan fruit on top of the candy leaves to form an attractive design. If desired, decorate the wreath with ribbon. Della Robbia Wreath Fruit Float Materials Fruit such as canned apricot halves, drained; green grapes; maraschino cherries; strips of orange peel, curled; sliced or whole strawberries 2 1/2 cups Ginger Ale 1/2 cup lemon juice Mint leaves Pitcher Ring mold, 1 quart Method Freeze a Della Robbia ice ring to float in a bowl of holiday punch. In a one-quart pitcher, combine 2 1/2 cups Ginger Ale and 1/2 cup lemon juice. Pour two cups of the mixture into a one-quart ring mold. Freeze. 14 Resources for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany

Education Arrange items such as canned apricot halves, green grapes, maraschino cherries, strips of curled orange peel, and sliced or whole strawberries in a decorative pattern on top of the frozen ring. Add mint leaves. Carefully pour the remaining liquid over the items and freeze again. Unmold and place the ring in punch prior to serving. Resources for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany 15

Worship Overview In the Name of the Master may serve as the focus for a wide variety of seasonal worship experiences designed to make the story of faith visual and concrete. These include: decorating worship centers, lighting Advent candles, providing special holiday services, reading Scripture passages, sharing children s messages, singing carols and songs, and providing visuals. In order to use the thematic approach offered by In the Name of the Master, the person or committee coordinating the Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany programming must adapt the elements provided to best fit the individual congregation s needs. Any or all of the following components may be used to enhance the preparation for and the celebration of the birth of Christ. Components Advent Candles Various traditions abound regarding colors and displays of Advent candles. Candles for the first two and final Sundays in Advent should be purple, denoting a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifice. The third candle is pink to represent joy. The Christ Candle, lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, must be white. On the Sunday after Christmas and on Epiphany Sunday the Christ candle may be relit. Candles may be arranged in a circle as in a wreath with the Christ Candle in the center. Or, candles may be arranged in a row with two candles on either side of the white Christ Candle. Another alternative would be to arrange varying heights of candlesticks on the altar table or worship center with the Christ Candle being the highest. Candles may be lit at any appropriate time in the worship service. If the ritual is part of the children s message, the candles should be lit as part of the story. The previous week s candles may be lit at the beginning of the service or as each candle is reviewed in the children s message. Altar or Worship Center Arrangement A visual display should be created as a focal point for worship during Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. In addition to the candles and greenery, elements of the Della Robbia Wreath that correspond to the teaching tools of the children s message could be added each Sunday making visible the worship theme and reinforcing the message. In the spirit of the della Robbia family of artists, a porcelain Nativity set would also be appropriate in an arrangement. Considerations must be given to the dimensions of the sanctuary when determining size and placement of the display. Resources for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany 19

Worship Banners or Posters In addition to constructing or enhancing an Advent Wreath to represent the Della Robbia variety, the six illustrations provided may be used to create banners or posters throughout the four weeks of Advent, for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, and on Epiphany Sunday. Each visual helps to reinforce the theme for that Sunday and serves as a reminder of the elements of the Della Robbia wreath and the connection to the names associated with Jesus. These graphics may be duplicated as patterns to use to create fabric banners or reproduced as paper posters to display throughout the series. Carols Suggestions for carols are included to complement the theme and lesson for each worship experience. The essence of the week s focus will be found in those lyrics. It would be most appropriate to sing the carol after the Words of Preparation or before or after the children s message. In addition to congregational singing, the music may be included as special choral numbers of adult or children s choirs, or as instrumental or vocal performances. Children s Messages Six children s messages are included, one for each Sunday of Advent, one for the celebration of Christ s birth for use on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, and one for an observance of Epiphany. The messages may be given as a part of the morning worship service in connection with the lighting of the candles, or may be used as a part of Children s Church. A teaching tool to share with the participants is part of each message. They include: First Sunday in Advent: Della Robbia Wreath Second Sunday in Advent: Circle of Evergreen of Della Robbia Wreath Third Sunday in Advent: Apple on Della Robbia Wreath Fourth Sunday in Advent: Cherries on Della Robbia Wreath Christmas Eve or Christmas Day: Grapes on Della Robbia Wreath Epiphany Sunday: Pomegranate on Della Robbia Wreath. Additional information about Advent or a review of the meaning of each candle could be included depending on the needs of individual congregations or upon time constraints. 20 Resources for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany

Worship Illustrations In the Name of the Master contains illustrations of the elements of the Della Robbia Wreath used during the four weeks of Advent, on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, and for Epiphany Sunday. These designs may be enlarged or reduced and reproduced for use as bulletin covers and clip art. Scripture Scripture lessons for the six messages of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany are taken from the New Testament and Gospel readings of the New Revised Standard Version [NRSV] that correspond to the In the Name of the Master theme. Scripture passages correlate with, but are not based on, the lectionary readings for Years A, B, and C. Preaching Ideas Each theme may serve as a springboard for developing a message appropriate to the week s In the Name of the Master emphasis. Words of Preparation Introducing the theme of the week, the Words of Preparation should occur early in the service as a prelude to lighting the Advent candles or as a lead into the children s story. Words of Preparation may be read by an individual or by a family. Supplies To create the visual display, to light the candles, and to share the messages, the coordinator must assemble the following materials: advent wreath or candle holders; Bible; candles: 3 purple and 1 pink; 1 white; greenery; items for worship center arrangement; matches or tapers; music for carols; teaching tools for children s messages. Resources for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany 21

Worship Advance Preparation In order to prepare for the presentation of In the Name of the Master: construct an Advent Wreath in the Della Robbia style; duplicate illustrations for banners, bulletin covers, clip art, or posters; obtain items for the children s messages; practice music for selected songs; prepare Worship Center display; secure leadership for all components. Leadership Coordination of In the Name of the Master can be done by one person, or duties may be assigned to staff such as Pastors, Christian Educators, and Music Directors, or to volunteers serving on Worship Committees or Seasonal Task Forces. Whoever assumes responsibility must see that leadership is provided for: coordinating decorations; creating visual displays; leading special worship services; lighting candles; reading Scripture; selecting music; sharing children s messages. Enhancements In the Name of the Master may be used as a simple theme for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, or may be used extensively to provide the framework for coordinating congregational life during these seasons. The theme may be enhanced beyond worship applications to include education, outreach, and nurture opportunities. 22 Resources for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany

Worship Children s Messages Fourth Sunday in Advent The Angel Proclaims Christ, the Lord Scripture Luke 2:10 But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for see -- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. Theme The Angel proclaims the Good News that Christ is born. Symbol Cherries on Della Robbia Wreath Music O Come, All Ye Faithful Words of Preparation Advent is a time for proclaiming the Good News. Thanks be to God for the joy of new birth. Today we celebrate God s gift of a Messiah, the Anointed One. With the Angels, may we prepare to welcome Christ, our Lord. Children s Message Do you remember what the apple on our Della Robbia wreath symbolizes? It reminds us of Adam and Eve s sin and our need for a Savior. So our wreath is an example of how a masterpiece carries the name of its creator, Della Robbia, with its circle symbolizing God s gift of eternal life, and the apple representing human sin that God sent Jesus to overcome. This week, we look at another fruit that is often a part of a Della Robbia wreath: the cherry. The cherry reminds us of the blessings we have because of Christ, our Lord. Did you know that artists often painted the Christ Child holding cherries in His hand? That may seem rather strange to us, but to the people of the Middle Ages it made sense. Cherries represented God s blessings. They symbolized that Christ brought the hope of heaven to earth. We hear this hope in the words of the Angel in the Christmas story. An Angel joined by a Heavenly Host proclaimed the arrival of our Savior who is Christ, the Lord. The Angel used a name that told the Shepherds even more about this special Baby. The word Christ means Anointed One which signifies being set apart for a special purpose. Jesus the Christ was the promised Messiah, the One especially empowered by God to bring blessings to God s people. Resources for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany 29

Worship The Angel amazed the Shepherds with the Good News of Christ s birth. We can understand even better than the Shepherds did the importance of the blessings we receive because of Christ s birth. Now we can become part of the Angel Chorus and tell others of the hope of heaven born to those who accept Jesus as the Christ, the Anointed One of God. Prayer Dear God, Thank You for sending Jesus Christ to earth as Your Chosen One. Help us to share the Good News of His birth with others. Amen. 30 Resources for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany

Nurture Overview In the Name of the Master invites families to share in the preparation for Christmas by using an Advent Wreath at home as the focus for devotions and activities. Featuring a Della Robbia Wreath as the teaching tool, a different name of God s Masterpiece Jesus is highlighted each week to illustrate the symbolism of the candle. Family worship suggestions are provided for Sunday devotions including Scripture, music, story, and prayer. Six ideas for living out the message complete each week s preparation, building toward Christmas Day and continuing through Epiphany. Advent wreaths come in a variety of styles; one common arrangement is a circle of evergreen branches with purple or blue candles for three Sundays, a pink candle as the light of Christ comes nearer, and a white candle in the center, lit on Christmas Day and re-lit through Epiphany Sunday. In the Name of the Master is based on lighting a candle each week, and highlighting various aspects of the parts of a Della Robbia wreath to focus on the theme. [Light the fourth Advent candle.] Pray Dear God, Thank You for sending Jesus Christ to earth as Your Chosen One. Help us to share the Good News of His birth with others. Amen. Do Bake or buy an angel food cake and decorate it with cherry icing. Compile a list of blessings the family receives because of the birth of Christ, the Lord. Compose an acrostic poem using the letters C-H-R-I-S-T to praise God s Anointed One. The C could stand for chosen, the H for holy, and so forth. Resources for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany 45
