The Holy Eucharist and the Celebration and Blessing of the Marriage of Vera Gluščević and Timothy Davies Morton May 5, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. St. James Episcopal Church South Pasadena, California

2 Dear friends and family, On this joyous day, we welcome you to St. James to join us as we pledge our lives to each other. This church is a special place to us. Over the past few years, it has become our spiritual home as we have explored what it means to follow Jesus in our lives. One of the lessons we have learned and re-learned many times over is that we, as human beings, are not meant to be alone. The readings and music in this service remind us of God s intention for us: not only through the institution of Marriage, but also in the broader recipe for Christian community: Волите једно друго као што ја волех вас. You all are our community. You have raised us, loved us, and shared lives with us; today you witness as we enter a new life together, and represent the broader Love that will sustain and enrich us throughout this life. The service this afternoon will likely be unfamiliar, in whole or in part, to many of you here today. We invite you to participate as you feel comfortable, or simply to be present with us on the journey. With love and gratitude to you all, Tim & Vera

Voluntary Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland J.S. Bach ( ) Choral Prelude traditional Latin hymn Ubi Caritas Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Exultemus, et in ipso jucundemur. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Simul ergo cum in unum congregamur: Ne nos mente dividamur, caveamus. Cessent iurgia maligna, cessent lites. Amen. John 13:34-35 This text is also our Gospel reading later in the service: we like it because we think it s the best summary we know of what it means to be a Christian. Connie Dover, arr. TDM (1983-) Where charity and love are, God is there. Christ's love has gathered us into one. Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him. And may we love each other with a sincere heart. A new commandment Where charity and love are, God is there. As we are gathered into one body, Beware, lest we be divided in mind. Let evil impulses stop, let controversy cease, And may Christ our God be in our midst. Where charity and love are, God is there. And may we with the saints also, See Thy face in glory, O Christ our God: The joy that is immense and good, Unto the ages through infinite ages. Amen. A new commandment give I unto you, saith the Lord, that ye love together, as I have loved you, that e'en so ye love one another. By this shall ev'ry man know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. The Call Thomas Tallis ( ) George Herbert ( ) Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: Such a Way, as gives us breath: Such a Truth, as ends all strife: Such a Life, as killeth death. One of our favorite poems is also by George Herbert and begins Love bade me welcome Come, My Light, my Feast, my Strength: Such a Light, as shows a feast: Such a Feast, as mends in length: Such a Strength, as makes his guest. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: Such a Joy, as none can move: Such a Love, as none can part: Such a Heart, as joys in love. 3 The music is a quintessential example of 16 th century English sacred music, written by one of its masters.

Blizu okeana, grad je ruža i tu Tako jarko sunce sija i gore snežne sede iznad palmi i tamo miris sitnog jasmina i poj ptica ispunjava noći i slatki vinograd raste Ti mi ovde i doleti! words: VG (1984-) music: Alexander Borodin ( ) Fly here, upon starlight, here is our home, this is our song. Let us walk, you and I, now one in the Love that made the Universe. Under these blue skies, the air is full of sparks. Near the ocean is the city of roses, and there So brightly the sun shines and the mountains of snow rise above the palms and there the scent of jasmine and the chant of birds fill the nights, and a sweet vineyard grows You fly here to me! The Welcome Jobi Harrell, oboe Sharon Kunde, flute Andrew Newman, clarinet Marilinda Garcia, harp Celebrant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. People And also with you. Please remain standing for This is one of VG s favorite melodies---she also wrote the words, adapted from the original Russian text. Now it is песма наша (our song)! Prayers of Penitence Celebrant As we prepare to hear God s word and to celebrate the marriage of Vera and Timothy, we remember our human frailty and our need for God s help in all that we do. People Lord our God, in our sin we have avoided your call. Our love for you is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes away early. Have mercy on us; deliver us from judgment; bind up our wounds and revive us; in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Celebrant The Lord forgive you your sin, unite you in the love which took Christ to the cross, and bring you in the Spirit to his wedding feast in heaven. Amen. 4

5 Please sit for Traditional Mass Kyrie and Gloria William Byrd ( ) These are two movements from William Byrd s Mass for 5 voices, which is one of TDM s favorite pieces of music. The function of these two pieces side by side is to move from penitence ( Lord, have mercy ) to praise ( We give thanks to you for your great glory ). The other movements of the Mass are the Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. The choir will sing the Agnus Dei from this same Mass setting during communion. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Iesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus Altissimus, Iesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu, in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you. We give thanks to you for your great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, You who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. You who takes away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You who sits at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. For you alone are holy; You alone are the Lord; You alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Ghost, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Celebrant addresses the persons to be married, saying Dearly beloved: We have come together in the presence of God to witness and bless the joining together of Timothy Morton and Vera Gluščević in Holy Matrimony. The bond and covenant of marriage was established by God in creation, and our Lord Jesus Christ adorned this manner of life by his presence and first miracle at a wedding in Cana of Galilee.

6 The union of husband and wife in heart, body, and mind is intended by God for their mutual joy; for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity. Therefore marriage is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, deliberately, and in accordance with the purposes for which it was instituted by God. Into this holy union Vera and Timothy now come to be joined. If any of you can show just cause why they may not lawfully be married, speak now; or else for ever hold your peace. Then the Celebrant says to the persons to be married I require and charge you both, here in the presence of God, that if either of you know any reason why you may not be united in marriage lawfully, and in accordance with God s Word, you do now confess it. The Declaration of Consent The Celebrant says Vera, will you have Timothy to be your husband; to live together in the covenant of marriage? Will you love him, comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all others, be faithful to him as long as you both shall live? Vera I will. The Celebrant says Timothy, will you have Vera to be your wife; to live together in the covenant of marriage? Will you love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all others, be faithful to her as long as you both shall live? Timothy I will. The Celebrant addresses the congregation, saying Will all of you witnessing these promises do all in your power to uphold Timothy and Vera in their marriage? People We will.

Please stand and join in singing Hymn 459 And have the bright immensities 7 HALIFAX

8 The Word of God Please remain standing for The Collect Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O gracious and everliving God, you have created us male and female in your image: Look mercifully upon Timothy and Vera who come to you seeking your blessing, and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor and keep the promises and vows they make; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Please sit for The First Lesson: Genesis 2:7-9, After the reading Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Please remain seated while the Choir sings Psalm 25:4-5, 19:1,14 Pokaži mi, Gospode, puteve svoje, nauči me hoditi stazama tvojim. Uputi me istini svojoj, i nauči me, jer si ti Bog spasenja mojega, tebi se nadam svaki dan. Ryan Trainor Orthodox chant Make me to know your ways, O Lord, teach me to walk your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation, I hope for you every day. Nebesa kazuju slavu Božiju, i dela ruku njegovih Svemir glasi. Da su ti reči usta mojih ugodne, i pomisao srca mojega pred tobom, Gospode kreposti moja i izbavitelju moj! The heavens declare the glory of God, and the Universe proclaims his handiwork. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before you O Lord, my strength and my redeemer! Please remain seated for The Second Lesson: Colossians 3:12-17 After the reading Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Nick Siler

Please stand and join in singing Hymn Lord, make us servants of your peace JERUSALEM This text is the famous prayer of St. Francis, whose simplicity belies its depth. The tune here is an iconic melody of the Anglican tradition, written by C. Hubert Parry. We hope the visual appearance here does not detract from the hymn. 9

10 Please remain standing. The Gospeller censes the Gospel, first saying, The Gospel: John 13:34-35 Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Thanks be to God. After the reading Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Homily The Rev. Canon Anne Tumilty and the Rev. Michael Cover The Bride and Groom process to the altar for The Marriage Please remain seated. The Groom, facing the Bride and taking her right hand in his, says In the Name of God, I, Timothy, take you, Vera, to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, as long as we both shall live. This is my solemn vow. Then they loose their hands, and the Bride, still facing the Groom, takes his right hand in hers, and says In the Name of God, I, Vera, take you, Timothy, to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, as long as we both shall live. This is my solemn vow. The Priest asks God s blessing on the rings as follows Bless, O Lord, these rings to be signs of the vows by which this man and this woman have bound themselves to each other; through Jesus Christ our Lord. People Amen.

11 The giver places the ring on the ring-finger of the other s hand and says in Serbian I give you this ring as a symbol of my vow, and with all that I am, and all that I have, I honor you, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Then the Celebrant joins the right hands of husband and wife and says Now that Timothy and Vera have given themselves to each other by solemn vows, with the joining of hands and the giving and receiving of rings, I pronounce that they are husband and wife, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Those whom God has joined together let no one put asunder. People Amen. The Prayers The people stand. At the conclusion of each prayer, the people respond AMEN. The Deacon chants Let us pray. Eternal God, creator and preserver of all life, author of salvation, and giver of all grace: Look with favor upon the world you have made, and for which your Son gave his life, and especially upon Timothy and Vera whom you make one flesh in Holy Matrimony. Amen. Mother of the Bride Daj im mudrosti i predanosti u zajedničkom životu, da jedno drugome budu snaga kada je potrebno, savetnik u vreme pitanja, uteha u tuzi i sadrug u radosti. Amen. Give them wisdom and devotion in the ordering of their common life, that each may be to the other a strength in need, a counselor in perplexity, a comfort in sorrow, and a companion in joy. Father of the Groom Grant that their wills may be so knit together in your will, and their spirits in your Spirit, that they may grow in love and peace with you and one another all the days of their life. Amen.

12 Mother of the Bride Daj im milosti, kada jedno drugo povrede, da to prepoznaju i priznaju svoje greške i traže oproštaj jedno od drugoga i od Tebe. Amen. Give them grace, when they hurt each other, to recognize and acknowledge their fault, and to seek each other s forgiveness and yours. Father of the Groom Make their life together be a sign of Christ s love to this sinful and broken world, that unity may overcome estrangement, forgiveness heal guilt, and joy conquer despair. Amen. Mother of the Bride Po,dari im, ako je takva volja tvoja, dar dece i daj im mudrosti i milosti da ih podignu da Tebe poznaju i da služe tvojoj volji. Amen. Bestow on them the gift and heritage of children, and the grace to bring them up to know you, to love you, and to serve you. Father of the Groom Give them such fulfillment of their mutual affection that they may reach out in love and concern for others. Amen. Clergy prays Grant that all married persons who have witnessed these vows may find their lives strengthened and their loyalties confirmed. Amen. The Deacon chants Grant that the bonds of our common humanity, by which all your children are united one to another, and the living to the dead, may be so transformed by your grace, that your will may be done on earth as it is in heaven; where, O Father, with your Son and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign in perfect unity, now and for ever. Amen.

13 Please remain standing as the couple kneels for The Blessing of the Marriage Celebrant Most gracious God, we give you thanks for your tender love in sending Jesus Christ to come among us, to be born of a human mother, and to make the way of the cross to be the way of life. We thank you, also, for consecrating the union of man and woman in his Name. By the power of your Holy Spirit, pour out the abundance of your blessing upon this man and this woman. Defend them from every enemy. Lead them into all peace. Let their love for each other be a seal upon their hearts, a mantle about their shoulders, and a crown upon their foreheads. Bless them in their work and in their companionship; in their sleeping and in their waking; in their joys and in their sorrows; in their life and in their death. Finally, in your mercy, bring them to that table where your saints feast for ever in your heavenly home; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The husband and wife still kneeling, the Priest adds this blessing God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, bless, preserve, and keep you; the Lord mercifully with his favor look upon you, and fill you with all spiritual benediction and grace; that you may faithfully live together in this life, and in the age to come have life everlasting. Amen. The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The newly married couple then greet each other, after which greetings may be exchanged throughout the congregation.

14 The Holy Communion Please sit for The Offertory Anthem The Holy Table is set for Communion and censed This simple text from the Psalms is masterfully set by William Byrd: the first phrase as a confident declaration, the second as a joyful dance, concluding with a celebratory Alleluia. Haec Dies Psalm 118:24 William Byrd ( ) Haec dies quam fecit Dominus; exultemus et laetemur in ea. Alleluia! This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Alleluia! Please stand and join in singing Hymn 420 When in our music God is glorified ENGLEBURG

15 Please remain standing for The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise. The Celebrant continues It is right, and good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the love of wife and husband, you have given us an image of the heavenly Jerusalem, adorned as a bride for her bridegroom, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who loves her and gave himself for her, that he might make the whole creation new. Therefore we praise you, joining with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Celebrant and People Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. X Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

16 On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. X Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

17 Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Fraction anthem King of kings, yet born of Mary PICARDY Celebrant The gifts of God for the People of God. The Communion The Bride and Groom receive Communion followed by the Congregation. All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion. If you do not wish to receive communion, you are welcome to come forward and cross your arms across your chest to receive a blessing.

18 During Communion, the Choir sings Agnus Dei Traditional Mass William Byrd ( ) This concluding movement of the Mass for 5 Voices weaves a tight yet delicate melodic tapestry into its supplication. The end of the opening three-voice section, with cascading pleas of miserere, and the first statement of dona nobis pacem are two of the most tender and personal moments that TDM has yet found in choral music. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, give us your peace. Please remain seated and join in singing Hymn 439 What wondrous love is this WONDROUS LOVE

The People stand for The Postcommunion Prayer Celebrant Let us pray. People O God, the giver of all that is true and lovely and gracious: We give you thanks for binding us together in these holy mysteries of the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that by your Holy Spirit, Vera and Timothy, now joined in Holy Matrimony, may become one in heart and soul, live in fidelity and peace, and obtain those eternal joys prepared for all who love you; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The people join in singing Hymn 435, vs 1,4,5,6 At the name of Jesus KING S WESTON 19!
