1 For All The Saints The Rector s Corner.... Happy New Year! Dear Friends, We are moving from the celebration of the Baptism of Jesus, through the season of Ordinary Time that follows, and on to the forty-day season of Lent. Over the course of this important time in our lives, we ll explore the importance of Jesus being baptized by his cousin John, as well as the many experiences over the weeks that follow, including the calling of the disciples, Jesus teaching, healing, praying, and being transfigured. Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, which occurs this year on February 14, will include two opportunities to receive the imposition of ashes: first at 8:30 am and then at 7:30 pm. Both services will include the Holy Eucharist. The morning service will be a said service without music; while the evening service will include music. Many Thanks to the Search Committee The selection of our new Music Coordinator began shortly after the announcement was made of Richard Ludlum s retirement. The first order of business was to form a Search Committee. On behalf of the Clergy, Wardens, Vestry, and People of All Saints Church, our extreme gratitude is offered to Chad Newsome, coordinator of the group and member of the choir; Meg Beresik, choir member; Gerald Harvey, Senior Warden; Joe DeAmicis, Junior Warden; Priscilla Hiby, Vestry Member, Robert Nagy, Rector. The process went very smoothly and we are all very pleased with the result. Welcome Stephen Pinel Our new Music Coordinator is Stephen Pinel. He comes to us with considerable experience in the world of church music. Stephen holds both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Sacred Music from Westminster Choir College in Princeton; and, he has done doctoral work in Historical Musicology at New York University. He is the recipient of numerous honors and the author of numerous publications. His church music career includes nearly forty years with several churches throughout New Jersey and in New York City. Please give Stephen a warm welcome to the All Saints Church family. A special reception is planned following the ten fifteen service on Sunday, February 11. 2 For All the Saints Page Church Calendars There are still a few 2018 Church Calendars available for purchase in the Narthex. In addition to the obvious calendar information, there s also a lot of other churchie information that can be very helpful. You ll find information about the Sunday readings, liturgical colors, the church liturgical seasons, and much more. Stewardship Pledge Drive Thanks to everyone who has returned a completed pledge form. There are still a few households to hear from. It s never too late to turn in your pledge of financial support. (But, sooner is better than later.) If you have yet to turn in your pledge, you may place it in the collection plate or mail it to the church. If you need a pledge form, please call the church. Your attention to this very important matter is very much appreciated. There will be additional information in the March issue of the newsletter about how we will observe the season of Lent. As we begin to prepare to enter into the Lenten season, please prayerfully consider how your selfexamination during Lent will assist your spiritual development. And, please remember, I am counting on seeing you in church! Peace, Robert The Reverend Robert A. 4 For All the Saints Page 4 Supper with All Saints.... As we start a new year, we continue to offer our once-monthly evening meal for those who are hungry or would like a friendly dinner. We offer a full meal with salad, a tasty entrée, such as roast chicken, potatoes and buttered carrots, with rolls and butter. We have a table laden with coffee and decaf, tea, lemonade, and iced tea. Our guests enjoy desserts including cakes, pies, fresh fruit, cookies, and treats for special occasions. We serve from 4-6 pm on the last Tuesday of the month; January 30 th for this month. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in Bristol Hall. We ask you volunteers to help January 30 th. What do we need? We hope a volunteer steps up to help greet our guests (and keep count of our guests for budget purposes.) We need someone to help clean up less work than you might expect, as we use paper products for serving, but real cutlery for dining. We also ask for two people friends who want to work together or two volunteers who can serve the dinners to our guests. If you have never volunteered before, we ll help you learn the tasks. Best job? Just walking around and talking with the guests! Please signup or contact Phyllis Kata, , edphyllis@comcast.net. We d love to see you! Church School.... Thank you to all the families who participated in our annual Christmas pageant. It was another success. The church school children will be busy these next few weeks as two projects to benefit St. Gregory s Pantry will be implemented. The first is a Souper Bowl party! Please send in soup cans and place them into the provided soup baskets in the church foyer. Soup cans will be collected until the last week of January and delivered to St. Gregory s before kickoff on Super Bowl Sunday. Keep a look-out for student-made flyers which will announce the goal of cans they would like to collect. Thank you, Julie, for sharing the idea! On February 4 and 11 the children will be selling hearts for our annual Hearts for Hope fundraiser. The beautifullydesigned hearts will decorate the walls of St. Gregory s Valentine s dinner and the proceeds will be donated there as well. We hope you can help us reach our goals. Cindy McGlynn Outreach.... The Giving Tree..Wow! Thank you to all who donated toys and gift cards for St. Gregory s Christmas toy drive. The outpouring of love under the tree was all the decoration our beautiful tree needed. We placed 45 ornaments on the tree and they disappeared almost immediately. AND, there were way more than 45 donations waiting for transport to St. Greg s. Thank you and a Happy, Healthy New Year to all from the Outreach Committee.

Sunday School Nursery Care Anglican Studies for Teens Anglican Studies for Adults Bible Study Benedictine Way ASH WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE FEBRUARY 14 HOLY EUCHARIST A LENTEN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION PROGRAM This year, we will study the idea of Embracing A Life Of Meaning as presented in a 5-session guide including video and group discussion. This program will begin on Wednesday, February 21, at 7:30 pm, and go through Wednesday, March 21. In this study, best-selling author Kathleen Norris provides a unique viewpoint on what matters most, including: Belief Matters: Why does belief matter? To what do we give our hearts? What is the core message of what we believe creeds or commitment? To what extent is to believe also to belove? The Bible Matters: The Bible is our collective story. How is that story reflected in our daily lives? What is it about the Bible that always seems to address our present moment? Community Matters: In community, individualism and imperfection meet grace and acceptance. What is our part in the Body of Christ? Place Matters: In what ways is faith set within the physical space of home, church, land, and people? We Matter: What does it mean to remain in God s image and to counter our selfishness by embracing the world and its needs? Each Wednesday session begins with a minute video presentation by Kathleen followed by a recorded interaction with a diverse small group of adults. After the video those gathered that week will have their own discussion of the same topic. Each weekly topic stands on its own; so, come as your schedule permits. Our time together will conclude with the service of Compline.

7 For All the Saints Page 7 Legacy Giving.... The formation of the All Saints Legacy Society will be formally announced, and more information on the Society distributed, at the annual parish meeting on Sunday, January 21, Additional information will be available on the All Saints website, allsaintsbayhead.org, and from the parish office. The All Saints Legacy Society is being formed to expand All Saints endowment through the acceptance of estate and planned gifts. The Legacy Society is open to anyone who declares they have made a provision for All Saints Church in their estate plan. Those of us who make such provisions will join those who already have made legacy gifts of record in the past and will be added as members of the Society. By providing for All Saints with a legacy gift, you will continue to fund its ministries and mission in perpetuity. 8 For All the Saints Page 8 WEDNESDAY CELEBRATIONS OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST Most times, the mid-week celebration of the Holy Eucharist includes a special commemoration of a particular person or event in the Episcopal Church calendar. If the special feast falls on the Wednesday, then that is the feast of the day. If it is on some other day that week, we transfer it to Wednesday. Each service takes place at the regularly scheduled time of 8:30 am and usually lasts about a half hour. All are encouraged to participate. The special commemorations for January, February, and March are identified below. January 24 January 31 February 7 February 14 February 21 February 28 March 7 March 14 March 21 March 28 The Conversion of St. Paul (transferred) The Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ (transferred) Ferial Day* Ash Wednesday Saint Matthias the Apostle (transferred) Anna Julia Haywood Cooper Perpetua and her Companions, Martyrs of Carthage Ferial Day* Saint Joseph (transferred) Wednesday in Holy Week * A day on which no particular Saint, Feast or Fast is commemorated; however the Holy Eucharist is celebrated at 8:30 am. THE NEXT TIMES FOR BAPTISM Here are the dates for regularly-scheduled baptisms for all of 2018 and Of course, other Sundays are available as the needs arise. If there is someone in your family who is to be baptized, please contact the Rector to arrange for instruction. Also, these will be times for all of us to reaffirm our own baptismal vows. FEAST DAY Baptism of Jesus past Sunday, January 13 Easter Vigil Saturday, March 31, 7:30 pm Saturday, April 20, 7:30 pm Day of Pentecost Sunday, May 20 Sunday, June 9 All Saints Sunday Sunday, November 4 Sunday, November 3 Burning Previous Years Palms In preparation for Ash Wednesday, it will be necessary for all of us to bring the palms that we have received on previous years Palm Sundays. These previously distributed palms are burned and the ashes are used for the Imposition of Ashes on Ash Wednesday. This is a helpful symbol for the cycle of life and death. So, please bring those palms to the church no later than Shrove Tuesday. A basket in which to place your palms will be in the Narthex near the Baptismal Font for your convenience.
