GATHERING IN GOD S NAME As the entrance bell is rung, please stand to sing the hymn INTROIT HYMN 1 Now is eternal life if risen with Christ we stand, in him to life reborn, held firm within his hand; no more we fear death s ancient dread, in Christ arisen from the dead. 2 For God, the living God, stooped down to share our state; by death destroying death Christ opened wide life s gate. He lives, who died; he reigns on high; who live in him shall never die. 3 Unfathomed love divine, come reign within my heart; from you no depth or height, not life or death can part; my life with you in God shall be, now and through all eternity. The presiding priest greets all in the name of the Risen Lord In the name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Christ is risen. Alleluia! He is risen indeed. Alleluia! The deacon says 3 George Wallace Briggs ( ) Reproduced with permission. Together in Song 385 Tune: Harewood (TiS 433) In baptism we died with Christ, so that as Christ was raised from the dead, we might walk in newness of life. Let us receive new life in him as we confess our sins in penitence and faith. Like Mary Magdalene and the disciples at the empty tomb, we fail to grasp the wonder of your presence. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Like the disciples huddled behind locked doors, we are afraid to be seen as your followers. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

Like those who have lost their way, we are slow to follow you as our Good Shepherd. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. The presiding priest sprinkles all with water as a symbol of the new life we receive through baptism, the choir sings Vidi Aquam I saw water flowing The presiding priest says the Absolution May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria in Excelsis is sung 4

The presiding priest says the Collect of the Day Let us pray. O God, you have prepared for those who love you joys beyond our understanding: pour into our hearts such love for you, that, loving you above all else, we may obtain your promises that exceed all we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD [sit] A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. 17:22-31 Then Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, To an unknown god. What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. 5

From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him though indeed he is not far from each one of us. For In him we live and move and have our being ; as even some of your own poets have said, For we too are his offspring. Since we are God s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead. For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. PSALM 66: O bless our God, you peoples: and cause God s praises to resound, 8 Who has held our souls in life: who has not suffered our feet to slip. 9 For you have proved us, O God: you have tried us as silver is tried. 10 You brought us into the net: you laid sharp torment on our loins. 11 You let our enemies ride over our heads, we went through fire and water: but you brought us out into a place of liberty. 12 I will come into your house with burnt-offerings: and I will pay you my vows, 13 The vows that opened my lips: that my mouth uttered when I was in trouble. 14 I will offer you burnt-offerings of fattened beasts, with the sweet smoke of rams: I will sacrifice a bull and the flesh of goats. 15 Come then and hear, all you that fear God: and I will tell what God has done for me. 16 I called to God with my mouth: and God s praise was on my tongue. 17 If I had cherished wickedness in my heart: the Lord would not have heard me. 6

18 But God has heard me: God has heeded the voice of my prayer. 19 Praise be to God: who has not turned back my prayer, or ceased steadfastly loving me. Text: A Prayer Book for Australia Chant: G H Knight A reading from the first letter of Peter. 3:13-22 Who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defence to anyone who demands from you an account of the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God s will, than to suffer for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. GRADUAL HYMN [stand] 1 This is my will, my one command, that love should dwell among you all. This is my will, that you should love as I have shown that I love you. 7

2 There is no greater love than this: to lay your life down for your friends. You are my friends if you obey what I command that you should do. 3 I call you servants now no more; no servant knows a master s mind. I call you friends, for all I hear my Father say you hear from me. 4 You chose not me, but I chose you, that you should go and bear much fruit. I chose you out that you in me should bear much fruit that will abide. 5 All that you ask the Father now for my name s sake you shall receive. This is my will, my one command, that love should dwell in each, in all. James Quinn ( ) Reproduced with permission. TiS 641 Tune: Suantrai (trad. Irish melody) GOSPEL ACCLAMATION & READING Please sing the Alleluia with the Choir Christ has been raised from the dead, giving us life in abundance; let us bring this good news to all people. Alleluia. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Please turn towards the proclamation of the Gospel TIS 257 A reading from the holy Gospel according to John. 14:15-21 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said to his disciples: If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them. 8

For the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Sunday School Prayer Miss Kim Sermon Mother Marilyn Motet: If ye love me Tallis During Eastertide, we say the Apostles Creed as a reminder of our baptism The deacon says Let us affirm the faith of the Apostles. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The presiding priest says This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith: We believe in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. [stand] The deacon says THE PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL Let us pray for the world and for the Church. After each prayer in your mercy, hear our prayer. After last prayer Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon them. 9 [please kneel or sit]

The presiding priest concludes the prayers Join our voice, we pray, Lord our God, to the songs of all your saints in proclaiming that you give us the victory through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GREETING OF PEACE The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said, Peace be with you! Then were they glad when they saw the Lord. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. [stand] You are invited to exchange a sign of peace with those around you During the Offertory hymn, a collection is taken up 2 Christ who gave for us his life, who for us endured the strife, is our Paschal Lamb to-day; we too sing for joy, and say Alleluia! 3 Christ who bore all pain and loss comfortless upon the cross, lives in glory now on high, pleads for us, and hears our cry: Alleluia! 4 Christ whose path no records tell, who descended into hell, who strong death in life hath bound, now in highest heaven is crowned. Alleluia! OFFERTORY HYMN 1 Christ the Lord is risen again, Christ hath broken every chain. Hark, angelic voices cry, singing evermore on high, Alleluia! 5 Christ who slumbered in the grave is exalted now to save; now through all the church it rings that the Lamb is King of kings. Alleluia! 6 Now Christ bids us tell abroad how the lost may be restored, how the penitent forgiven, how we too may enter heaven. Alleluia! 7 Thou, our Paschal Lamb indeed, Christ, thy ransomed people feed; at the end of earthly strife: raise us, Lord, to endless life. Alleluia! Michael Weisse ( ) tr. Catherine Winkworth ( ) et al. Tune: Orientis Partibus (A&M NS 302) 10

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The presiding priest begins the Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. The priest says the Eucharistic Preface for Easter, concluding with for ever praising you and singing: The priest continues the Eucharistic Prayer; the deacon says Great is the mystery of faith: The priest continues the Eucharistic Prayer, concluding with in songs of never-ending praise: 11

The deacon introduces the Lord s Prayer, saying As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND COMMUNION The presiding priest breaks the bread and says The disciples knew the risen Lord in the breaking of the bread. Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia! Agnus Dei is sung [kneel or sit] 12

The presiding priest says Behold, Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. The gifts of God for the people of God. Communicant members of all churches are welcome to receive Communion. If you would prefer a blessing, indicate this by crossing your arms over your chest. Please feel free to stand or kneel at the sanctuary step. Gluten-free altar breads are available, please tell the priest if you require one. DURING COMMUNION Ave Verum - Byrd Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine, vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine, cuius latus perforatum fluxit aqua et sanguine: esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. O Iesu dulcis, O Iesu pie, O Iesu, fili Mariae. Miserere mei. Amen. Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, who having truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for humanity, whose pierced side flowed with water and blood: May it be for us a foretaste [of the Heavenly banquet] in the trial of death. O sweet Jesus, O pious Jesus, O Jesus, Son of Mary, have mercy on me. Amen. THE SENDING OUT OF GOD S PEOPLE 1 This is the truth we hold, source of the joy we share, hope that can make us bold trusting the name we bear: that Christ has died and Christ is risen, in Christ shall all be made alive. Announcements are made after Communion DISMISSAL HYMN [stand] 2 This is the song of praise echoing down the years, true for the present days, through all our doubts and fears: that Christ has died and Christ is risen, in Christ shall all be made alive. 13

3 Christ is the living bread, Christ is the word to speak, Christ is the way to tread, Christ is the goal to seek; for Christ has died and Christ is risen, in Christ shall all be made alive. 4 One in the faith we share, out in his name we go; Jesus awaits us there, longing that all should know that Christ has died and Christ is risen, in Christ shall all be made alive. Basil Ernest Bridge (b. 1927) Reproduced with permission. TiS 469 Tune: Little Cornard The presiding priest says the Post-Communion Prayer followed by the Blessing The deacon says Go in the peace of Christ. Alleluia! Alleluia! Thanks be to God. Alleluia! 15 Works in Old Vicarage Courtyard From this Friday, 26 May, until Friday 9 June, with the approval of the Churchwardens, works will be undertaken in the Old Vicarage courtyard to install a new stormwater pit and pump, and to reconnect pipes associated with new and existing garden taps. This is all part of the upgrade and replacement of old water and other services as a necessary component of the Parish School s Main Campus Redevelopment Project (at no cost to the Parish). It will also help address stormwater and drainage issues affecting the entire site. Access to the Old Vicarage will be retained via the stairs and the ramp throughout this period, but a large percentage of the courtyard itself will be horded off for OH&S reasons, with a pathway around the outside of the hording. The paving in the courtyard will be fully restored once the new pit has been installed. Morning tea will take place in the OVPC as usual on Sundays 28 May and 4 June (Pentecost). Thank you for your patience as these essential works and improvements are carried out. A is for Aumbry An aumbry is a small (usually metal) safe, set into the wall of a church, for keeping the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist. This Reserved Sacrament is available for taking Holy Communion to those who are unable to attend the Eucharist in church. In Anglican custom, a white lamp burns above it. In some churches the Reserved Sacrament is kept in a small safe on an altar, this is known as a tabernacle. Either way, our Lord s Presence provides a focal point for prayer, devotion, and thanksgiving. At CCSY, the aumbry is on the north wall of the Lady Chapel. B is for Baptistery The baptistery is the area containing the font (similar to the sanctuary area around the altar). Traditionally, the font is placed near the main church entrance to signify that is by baptism that we into the Church, the Body of Christ. At Christ Church, the baptistery is located in the south aisle, to the right of the main entrance. It has its own outlet directly into the earth outside for the blessed water to be drained. Some churches, including St Paul s Cathedral Melbourne, have an immersion font (in addition to the pedestal font) set into the floor. Other churches, such as St John s Bentleigh, have their baptistery in the narthex (foyer), or in the central aisle. Many ancient churches overseas have their baptistery as a separate building opposite the church s main entrance (Florence and Pisa have well-known examples of this). The altar and the font are the two principal furnishings of any church building, reflecting the two major Sacraments of the Church. The font is covered during Lent, which is a season of preparation for not of baptism. After Eastertide, the Paschal Candle stands in the baptistery beside the font. 15
