1 Bishop Search Timeline The search for the 11th bishop of Indianapolis is broken into two big pieces. The Search Committee will work between now and July 2016 to engage in conversation with members of the diocesan household, develop a profile of our diocese, receive names for consideration, and discern a slate of candidates. From there, the Transition Committee will introduce the candidates to the diocese, oversee the election of the new bishop at the October 2016 diocesan convention, celebrate the ministry of Bishop Cate, and plan for the consecration of the new bishop in April Important Upcoming Dates: Late September - Mid November 2015: Holy Conversations with Diocesan Household December 2015: Publication of Diocesan Profile January/February 2016: Receive Names of Nominees July 2016: Announce Candidate Slate Bishop Search Timeline The search for the 11th bishop of Indianapolis is broken into two big pieces. 2 How Can You Help in the Bishop Search? Pray. Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a bishop for this Diocese, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Participate in Holy Conversations. The search committee is currently scheduling Holy Conversations around the diocese to help us discern what we are seeking in a bishop. 3 The Role of Bishop A Bishop is the chief priest and pastor of a diocese. A Bishop proclaims Christ s resurrection and interprets the Gospel. A Bishop works for reconciliation in the world. A Bishop ordains others to continue Christ s ministry. A Bishop shares in the leadership of the Church throughout the world. A Bishop encourages and supports all baptized people in their gifts and ministries, nourishing them from the riches of God s grace, prays for them without ceasing, and celebrates with them the sacraments of our redemption. A Bishop guards the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church. A Bishop celebrates and provides for the administration of the sacraments. 4 Bishops of the Diocese of Indianapolis Jackson Kemper ( ): Bishop of the Diocese of the Northwest, part of which became the Diocese of Indiana when he was succeeded by George Upfold ( ): Served as rector of St. John s Lafayette and Christ Church Indianapolis during his early years as bishop. Joseph Cruickshank Talbot ( ): Previously served as bishop of New Mexico, the Dakotas, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Montana, and Idaho, calling himself the Bishop of All Outdoors. David Buel Knickerbacker ( ): Was elected bishop of New Mexico & Arizona, but no one asked him if he wanted the job. He didn t. John Hazen White ( ): Became the first bishop of Northern Indiana after the diocese split, served until Joseph Marshall Francis ( ): While bishop, enlisted as an army chaplain during World War I. Richard Ainslie Kirchhoffer ( ): Bishop when Waycross was founded, wrote that camp...show[s]...that religion is a perfectly natural thing, as natural as hiking or playing ball. John Pares Craine ( ): Authorized the first regular ordination of a woman as Episcopal priest, Jackie Means, although he was too ill to participate in the January 1, 1977 service. Edward Witker Jones ( ): Bishop during founding of two cooperating ministries: Alternatives, Inc. and the Dayspring Center. Catherine Maples Waynick (1997-present): Preached at the installation of June Osborne as the 80th dean (but first woman) of the 800 year old Salisbury Cathedral.
