1 Saint Boniface CATHOLIC CHURCH JANUARY 14, 2018 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OUR MISSION Christ Jesus, you call us together as a parish to sow and nurture the seeds of God s saving love in the hearts and minds of all our neighbors and beyond by living your gospel. OUR VISION Christ Jesus, bless us as you blessed our patron, St. Boniface, so that, by carrying out the mission entrusted to us, our parish will yield a bountiful harvest of passionate disciples, united to you by the sacraments and sent by you to further your mission. HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE HEARING DEVICE AVAILABLE OUR VALUES Christ Jesus, enable us to reap this bountiful harvest by staying rooted in the good soil of the basic principles in which we as a parish believe. We are a parish who prays, studies, and acts in accord with the Scriptures and the traditions of the Catholic Church and the Diocese of Erie. We are a parish who stands firmly on the foundation of our past; We are a parish who understands and responds to the changing needs of all families today; We are a parish who welcomes and enjoys fellowship with all people; We are a parish who lives within our means and exercises responsible stewardship of the resources entrusted to us; We are a parish who works together as God s family for the good of all, putting our common mission above all else. This we pray, in your name. Amen. St. Boniface, pray for us Wattsburg Road Erie, PA

2 ST. BONIFACE FROM THE PASTOR S DESK There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Another Christmas season has come and gone. Time again to put away the lights and to take down the tree; time to remove the wreaths and holly and to carry Santa and his sleigh back up to the attic; time to stow away the bows and wrapping paper and to carefully pack up the ornaments and Nativity set for another year. For as much work as we put into Christmas, and as much joy as we get out of it, it always seems to pass too quickly, leaving us feeling a bit let-down as we return to plain, old Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time, however, is anything but ordinary. We call this, the longest of our liturgical seasons, ordinary from the ordinal numbers that we use to mark its passage (1st week in Ordinary Time, 2nd week, etc.). It begins the Monday following the Sunday after January 6th, the traditional date for Epiphany. In the new liturgical calendar, promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1969, Epiphany is celebrated on the Sunday after January 1st, and the Sunday after January 6th is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the final day of the Christmas season. That is, except when the Sunday after January 1st and the Sunday after January 6th are the same Sunday, as happened this year. In that case, we celebrate Epiphany on that Sunday and the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated the next day, which means that Ordinary Time actually began on a Tuesday this year. Confused yet? Don t worry too much about the math, because it is the purpose of this season that makes it truly extraordinary. While festive seasons like Christmas and Easter focus on specific aspects of God s plan for our salvation in Christ s birth, death, and resurrection, Ordinary Time celebrates the entire saving mystery of Christ s life as we rejoice for thirty-four weeks in his everyday actions, words, and ministry. The passage of the weeks of Ordinary Time recalls for us that God, who is beyond all time and is Lord of all time, entered into time to redeem all time. Christ didn t just save us in spectacular and defining moments like the Resurrection; his entire life, and every moment in it, was redemptive. The quiet years he spent in Nazareth, working each day beside his foster father Joseph as a carpenter; the many weeks he spent traveling from town to town, not performing miracles or offering any profound teachings, but simply walking, talking, and eating with his friends; the regular hours he set aside for prayer, rest, and relaxation - it is all part of God s ERIE redeeming plan, and it all leads us ever-forward toward the end of time, when all who spend their time in this life serving the Lord, in ways both extraordinary and ordinary, will be one in Christ. Perhaps the meaning of Ordinary Time is summed up best by the blessing of the Paschal Candle, which, while lit for the first time each year at Easter, burns throughout the year at every baptism and funeral, reminding us that all time, including Ordinary Time, is the time for our salvation: Christ yesterday and today, the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. All time belongs to him and all the ages. To him be glory and power through every age and forever. Amen. Fr. 4 Winter we have certainly had our share of the season. In preschool the children are loving it and come in with excitement and joy over the snow and the many things they can do to enjoy the season. We are doing many art projects from snowmen to snow scenes to penguins. We even introduced graphing with the many activities that they have done in the snow. We are beginning to put sounds and letters together to make words; the children are very excited. It is amazing to see how much the children are learning and growing and how successful we are becoming in preschool. We as teachers cannot take all the credit it is also the support, kindness and trust in us as teachers that our parents and parish community give us that makes it all possible. It takes a team and good people to make anything work and we are certainly a team here at St. Boniface. As preschool Director I want to share how happy I am in my position. These last 6 months have been amazing and I am putting all of my educational and directing skills into making our preschool something special. Thank you for all your prayers I look to 2018 with great excitement and many plans and ideas to implement into our program. As we move through the rest of winter try to find something good in the season as our children do and look ahead as we wait for the beauty of spring. Remember no matter how winter makes you feel and no matter how much it keeps you from going outside never lose contact with God, talk to Him in times of need for He is everywhere and is always there to listen. God Bless, Darlene Pamula Preschool Director Sunday January 14 After All Masses 10:30a.m. Monday January 15 5:00p.m. Tuesday January 16 6:00p.m. 7:00p.m. Advancement Committee (Gathering Space) Religious Education (Church) Diabetes Meeting (Allgeier Room) Cub Scouts (Center) Boy Scouts (Cafeteria) Wednesday January 17 7:00p.m. Sunday January 21 After all Masses 9:00-10:15a.m. 1:00-3p.m. Choir Rehearsal (Church) Coffee and Donuts (Cafeteria) Religious Education (Classrooms) Preschool Open House (School) SCHEDULING~ If you are interested in renting the Coleman Center or the School Cafeteria for a party or family function call the parish office at for more information. RCIA~ Have you wondered what the Catholic Church is all about or do you know someone that is interested in being Catholic? The RCIA team is now accepting applications for the 2018/2019 year. Applications are available at the back of church or can be sent out by calling the parish office ( ). Questions are always welcome regarding this process and the RCIA team can be reached through the office. CHILD PROTECTION AND CREATING SAFE ENVIRONMENTS HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND PROTECTING OUR YOUTH~ Trafficking of youth is a form of modern slavery. It includes both sex trafficking and forced labor. Any child under age 18 engaged in commercial sex is a victim of sex trafficking, even if the youth s participation is not forced or coerced. Be aware of recruiting tactics. Traffickers target victims through social media sites, telephone chat lines, afterschool programs, at shopping malls, bus depots, clubs/bars or through friends and acquaintances. To help protect your child, ask questions about your child s friends, monitor their computer use and know where he/she hangs out. To see what the Diocese of Erie is doing to help create safe environments, check out
