Twelve boxes (or casques as they were called) were buried, but only two have been found. The first one was discovered by a group of students in 1984, in Grant Park in Chicago. This is how it worked. Where M and B are set in stone And to Congress, R is known L sits and left Beyond his shoulder Is the Fair Folks' Treasure holder The end of ten by thirteen Is your clue Fence and fixture Central too For finding jewel casque Seek the sounds Of rumble Brush and music Hush.
The verse describes various landmarks in the area of Grant Park. Where M and B are set in stone 1 - The names of Mozart and Beethoven appear on the front of Symphony Hall. And to Congress, R is known 2 - Roosevelt University on Congress Parkway L sits and left 3 - Statue of Lincoln Beyond his shoulder 4 Shows the position of the casque The end of ten by thirteen referred to two lines of trees. Fence and fixture referred to this fencepost and wall fixture. The casque was apparently found between them. (That tree wasn t there at the time.)
Several landmarks around Grant Park appeared disguised within the image, including the statue Spirit of the Great Lakes The Bowman The fencepost
Now, this is the picture and verse which are thought to relate to New York: In the shadow Of the grey giant Find the arm that Extends over the slender path In summer You'll often hear a whirring sound Cars abound Although the sign Nearby Speaks of Indies native The natives still speak Of him of Hard word in 3 Vols. Take twice as many east steps as the hour Or more From the middle of one branch Of the v Look down And see simple roots In rhapsodic man's soil Or gaze north Toward the isle of B.
Several of the puzzles feature an iconic image for the city, and this one resembles the Statue of Liberty. In the shadow Of the grey giant Find the arm that Extends over the slender path This is thought to be the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge over the Narrows (slender path) near the Statue of Liberty (grey giant). In summer You'll often hear a whirring sound Cars abound Traffic and helicopters Although the sign Nearby Speaks of Indies native If you proceed up Narrows Ave north of the bridge, you come to Fort Hamilton High School and this sign
Fort Hamilton is named after Alexander Hamilton, who is the Indies native. (He was born in the West Indies.) The natives still speak Of him of Hard word in 3 Vols. (Not sure what these lines mean exactly. Him of hard word in 3 vols might be Webster of dictionary fame, in use by the pupils? But some of the book s literary references are very obscure.) Take twice as many east steps as the hour Or more From the middle of one branch Of the v Look down And see simple roots In rhapsodic man's soil The hour is at 11, indicating around 22 steps. This is the V, a footpath in an area in front of the school
There s a roadsign just west of it (circled below) which has a visual hint in the picture. In the Chicago solution described above, the image showed a fencepost next to the burial spot. I think the casque is buried beside the fence near this yellow sign.
So how does this work with the verse? Take twice as many east steps as the hour Or more From the middle of one branch Of the v Look down And see simple roots In rhapsodic man's soil If you take 22 east steps from the casque site, then you reach the middle of one branch of the V, and from there you can look down and see simple roots grass. The rhapsodic man is George Gershwin of Rhapsody in Blue, who was raised here in Brooklyn. (Also note that his family was Russian. In the book, each image corresponds with a nationality, and this is known to be the Russian one.) Or gaze north Toward the isle of B. Or instead, you could gaze north from the casque site, and see the isle of B. This is Bedloe s island, the old name for Liberty Island. You can look north and see the statue from here.
Palencar s illustrations include cryptic visual hints for the locations. I reckon he included a warped image of the school in this one
