2 Antiphon Book Introduction The text for these antiphons have been taken directly from the revised Roman Missal. The melodies are, for the most part, inspired by the Latin Gregorian chants found in the Roman Gradual. They follow the modality and imitate the melodic patterns of the original Latin chants. Now, however, they use the rhythm and the flow of Midwestern American English. Both the text and the music for the shorter congregational refrains are based upon the antiphons to which they are attached. The refrains should be sung as if speaking the text with great conviction and the natural rhythm of the words, a form of sung speech. Each word accent should be given its due intensity, while all the other syllables should then flow rapidly to or from that accent. The final word accent in each phrase will receive less intensity and will bring the phrase to a soft ending. When there are two or more notes over a syllable, the singer should move quickly from the first note to the last note, which is then given the full length of time for the syllable. The same manner of singing will hold whether it is a strongly accented syllable or a weak one. Even with an accented syllable, the last note will be longer and lighter. Repeated notes over a single syllable are to be sung as separate vowel sounds (e.g., God is to be sung as: Gah-ahd). These notes will have a staccato mark (a dot) over them. Sometimes the staccato mark will have a tenuto (a small dash) over it, which indicates that these repeated notes are to be sung with great intensity. Move quickly to the final repetition as the goal of the rhythmic motion (i.e., like saying: ah-ah! ). A tenuto used separately over a note indicates that the note should be stretched a bit in length, louder for an accented syllable and softer for an unaccented syllable. A note with a wavy line over it marks the quilisma sign, which is actually a question mark; it indicates a note to be glided over lightly with strong emphasis on the note that follows. Practice the two notes by saying in a shocked voice: OH? When in doubt about how to sing the melody, ask yourself: How would I speak this text meaningfully? Then first, speak that text - and only then sing it. The goal is to have a lively musical dialogue between the people s refrain and the choir or soloist s psalm verses and the antiphon. DIOCESAN HISTORY BOOKS For sale through the office or after Mass The glossy hard cover is $35. The illustrated comic book is $15. Write checks to St. Francis Xavier Cathedral.
