4 HOLY WEEK 2013 Newsletter Date Volume 1, Issue 1 I give you a new commandment, says the Lord: love one another as I have loved you. John 13:34 Christ became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every other name. Philippians 2:8-9 JOIN US FOR The Easter Triduum begins with the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper, reaches its high point at the Easter Vigil and closes with Prayer on Easter Sunday. HOLY THURSDAY March 28, 2013 St. Francis Xavier 6:30pm St. Mary 7:00pm In the history of the Church, Holy Thursday has always been a solemnly joyful day; it is the first day of the Triduum journey. Lent is over before sunset and the Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord s Supper. Holy Thursday commemorates the Institution of the Holy Eucharist, the Sacrament of Penance and the consecration of the Holy Oils. Holy Thursday celebrates the agony of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the betrayal of Jesus by Judas, events that took place on the night before Jesus' crucifixion; Jesus ultimate supper and sacrifice. It was and is the meal that he gives to us until he comes again in glory. The Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday begins the Triduum, a three-day celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ. Various traditions and customs associated with Holy Thursday, the washing of feet, reconciliation of penitents, and the consecration of holy oil (chrism). Holy Thursday service has an option for the blessing of chrism and the washing of feet. After the Holy Thursday evening Mass the altars are stripped bare, crosses are removed from the church or are veiled, and the Blessed Sacrament is carried through the church in procession to a place of reposition. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for an extended period of time is then encouraged. The consecrated hosts are then used for Good Friday services. GOOD FRIDAY March 29, 2013 St. Francis Xavier 1:00pm St. Mary 3:00pm Why is Good Friday "good"? That question puzzles not only children but many adults as well. How can Good Friday be good when it commemorates the day on which the sins of mankind brought about the death of our Savior? Good Friday is good because the death of Christ, as terrible as it was, led to the Resurrection on Easter Sunday, which brought new life to those who believe. The Church, stripped of its ornaments, the altar bare, and with the door of the empty tabernacle standing open, is as if in mourning. In the fourth century the Apostolic Constitutions described this day as a 'day of mourning, not a day of festive joy,' and this day was called the 'Pasch (passage) of the Crucifixion.' Traditionally, the organ is silent from Holy Thursday until the Alleluia at the Easter Vigil, as are all bells or other instruments, the only music during this period being unaccompanied chant. No Mass is celebrated on this day, but the service of Good Friday is called the Mass of the Presanctified because Communion, which had already been consecrated on Holy Thursday is given to the people. We can see that the parts of the Good Friday service correspond to the parts of the Mass: Liturgy of the Word; Reading of the Passion; Intercessory prayers for the Church and the entire world, Christian and non-christian; Veneration of the Cross and Communion.

5 Holy Saturday March 30, 2013 On this most sacred night, in which our Lord Jesus Christ passed over from death to life, the Church calls upon her sons and daughters, scattered throughout the world, to come together to watch and pray. But at daybreak on the first day of the week they took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb; but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. HOLY SATURDAY March 30, 2013 St. Francis Xavier 7:30pm St. Mary 8:00pm On this quiet day we accompany the Blessed Virgin Mary as she sorrowfully stood at the tomb of our Lord waiting for the Resurrection. In the evening, we participate in the Easter Vigil, the highlight of the Catholic liturgical year. In order to better understand the Easter Vigil, we should focus on four fundamental elements of the Easter Vigil: fire, word, water and bread. The Easter fire is blessed by the priest celebrant. The Easter candle, representing Christ, is brought into the dark church. The light of Christ dispels the darkness of sin. We then listen to the chanting of the Easter Proclamation, the Exultet. "Exultet, let them exult, the hosts of heaven, exult, let Angel ministers of God exult, let the trumpet of salvation sound aloud our mighty King's triumph! Be glad, let earth be glad, as glory floods her, ablaze with light from her eternal King, let all corners of the earth be glad, knowing an end to gloom and darkness." We then attentively listen to the history of salvation through the readings of the Old Testament. These readings lead us to the fulfillment of the Old Testament with the New Testament readings from the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Romans and the Gospel narrative of the Resurrection. Following the homily, the liturgy of Baptism takes place. The Catechumens are baptized and we renew our baptismal promises. We are sprinkled with the waters of baptism as the joy of Easter begins. After the liturgy of the Baptism, we then enter into the liturgy of the Eucharist as we normally do during each Mass. The Bread of life fills our souls with the peace that only the Risen Jesus can give us. EASTER SUNDAY March 31, 2013 St. Mary 8:00am & 10:00am St. Francis Xavier 9:00am & 11:00am Easter is the greatest feast in the Christian calendar. On this Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. For Catholics, Easter Sunday comes at the end of 40 days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving known as Lent. Through spiritual struggle and self-denial, we have prepared ourselves to die spiritually with Christ on Good Friday, the day of His Crucifixion, so that we can rise again with Him in new life on Easter. "Why seek you the living with the dead? He is not here, but is risen" (Luke 24:5-6). With those words, the angels greeted the women who had come to Christ's tomb with spices and ointments, to care for His body. They had found the stone rolled back, and the tomb empty, and they did not know what to make of it.
