2 PILGRIMAGE TO ITALY Venice * Padua * Florence * Bolsena * Rome * Monte Cassino * Pompei Spiritual Leader: Monsignor John McArthur Pastor, St. Louis Church, Memphis, Tennessee Pilgrimage Coordinator: Jeannie Presley October 6-16,2015 Tuesday, October 6 - Depart U.S. for an overnight flight to Venice. Dinner and breakfast are served aboard. D (dinner) & B (breakfast) In flight Wednesday, October 7 - We arrive in at the Venice airport, and drive a short distance west to Padua. After check-in at our hotel, we will visit the Basilica of St. Anthony, where we will see and venerate the relics of this holy man. St. Anthony was a Franciscan priest and close associate of St. Francis of Assisi. He was known for his love of the poor and his preaching, which led to countless conversions. We will celebrate our MASS in the BASILICA OF ST. ANTHONY. Then we have dinner together at our hotel. D Padua Thursday, October 8 - Today we take a short excursion to Venice, the "Queen of the Adriatic." This famed city is built on over 100 islets, supported by millions of wooden stakes and linked by 400 bridges. Our walking tour will include the Doges Palace, official palace of the Doge (ruler) and formerly the seat of government. We will actually have the chance to walk across the Bridge of Sighs (the covered windowed bridge) where convicted prisoners caught their last glimpse offreedom. We will visit the Cathedral of St. Mark, so masterfully decorated with rei igious mosaics. A demonstration of glass blowing will conclude our tour. Afterwards you may wish to spend some time shopping. Late afternoon we celebrate our MASS in a Chapel of the CATHEDRAL OF ST. MARK. We have dinner together in Venice and then return to our hotel. B & D Padua Friday, October 9 - We drive south to reach Florence, flourishing center of the Renaissance and Med ieval center of Europe's trade and finance. Late morn ing we arrive in the heart of the city and celebrate MASS in the CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA NOVELLA. There will be time for lunch on our own. Then we enjoy a walking tour of Florence, Art Capital of the World. We will see the famed Statue of David by Michelangelo, and then at the Cathedral we view another work of Michelangelo, the Baptistry Doors of religious scenes in bronze, called the "Gates of Paradise." We pass through the Piazza delia Signoria, and conclude our tour within Santa Croce Church, which contains tombs of many famous artists and leaders of Florence. After having a panoramic view of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo, we drive to the south, reaching Siena to check in to our hotel and have dinner together at a restaurant nearby. B & D Siena Saturday, October 10 - Our morning excursion will be to a Tuscan winery for the opportunity to sample a selection of the local wines in one of the Chianti regions that have made Tuscany so well known. During our visit we learn about the art of winema king and the process of making Italian olive oil. Plenty of delicious snacks will also be served. We return to Siena to be guided on a walking tour. We will view the spectacular Piazza del Campo in the heart of the town, where a biannual horse race, the Palio di Siena, is conducted with ten horses and riders in full medieval regalia representing their respective city districts. Our tour through the town concludes at the impressive Gothic style Cathedral of Siena, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The Cathedral features the iconic use of dark and light marble and contains exquisite inlaid marble floor. Late this afternoon we arrive at the Church of St. Dominic and celebrate HOLY MASS near the RELICS OF ST. CATHERINE.

3 One of Siena's most famous inhabitants, St. Catherine, was a member of the Third Order of the Dominicans, and became one of the most influential women in Church history. In 1377 she prevailed upon Pope Gregory XI to return to Rome from Avignon, France. We again sample the cuisine of Siena at another restaurant close to our hotel. B & D Siena Sunday, October 11 - We journey south to Rome, stopping at a very meaningful church in the charm ing lakeside town of Bolsena. It was in 1263 that a priest from Prague was on pilgrimage to Rome. At the center of his purpose in making the pilgrimage was the struggle in Faith he was having with severe doubts in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. It was at Mass which he celebrated in the Church of St. Christina in Bolsena that immediately after the Consecration the Host began to bleed on the Corporal and onto the altar. This was immediately reported to the Bishop of Bolsena, who in turn carried the blood-stained Corporal to the nearby city of Orvieto, where the Pope, Urban IV, saw and believed and proclaimed it a true miracle. That Corporal is still displayed in the Cathedral oforvieto today, and was the basis for the Holy Father to institute the Feast of Corpus Christi. When we arrive late morning we will go and celebrate HOLY MASS in the CHURCH OF ST. CHRISTINA. On this Autumn day it will be pleasant for us to pause for lunch on our own and to enjoy the scenic ambience of Lake Bolsena. We continue on to Rome, the Eternal City, where we check in at our hotel and have dinner together. Monday, October 12 - This morning we enter the magnificent Basilica of St. Peter. As we walk through and pray, our thoughts are flooded with the events that have taken place here and the people who have worshiped in this great Center of the Church. We celebrate HOLY MASS in the BASILICA OF ST. PETER near the Tomb of the first Pope. After Mass our guided tour takes us to the Vatican Museum filled with so many awesome treasures. Our tour includes the glorious Sistine Chapel, and will conclude within the Basilica itself. We have some free time in the area around the Vatican and time for lunch on our own. Afternoon: This afternoon is free for exploring on our own or for shopping. Some may want to make the ascent to the top of the dome of the Basilica of St. Peter. The expansive vista of Rome is magnificent, as well as the view of the Vatican Gardens below. Others may find that by shopping in stores near St. Peter's they can find plenty of religious articles to be blessed by the Holy Father at Wednesday's Audience. At an appointed time and place our bus will transport us back to the hotel. There we have dinner together. Tuesday, October 13 - This morning we journey south from Rome driving on the main highway called Autostrada del Sole (Highway of the Sun). We stop at the Benedictine Abbey of Monte cassino, completely rebuilt after the 2nd World War. There in the Abbey Church we celebrate HOLY MASS at the TOMBS OF ST. BENEDICT and his sister ST. SCHOLASTICA. Along the way driving south we stop for lunch on our own. Our next destination is Pompeii, where we have a guided tour through the excavations of this famous Roman city, which was completely destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Our return drive to Rome we stop in the Alban Hills at a town named Frascati. There we are treated to a delicious dinner in a town that was a favorite of Roman nobility, when in ancient times they escaped to these hills from the heat of a Roman summer. We return to our hotel late evening. Wednesday, October 14 - This morning is the Highlight of our Pilgrimage in Rome - a PAPAL AUDIENCE in St. Peter's Sq uare with His Holiness Pope Francis. After the Audience and a break for lunch, we drive into the heart of Rome to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, the world's most illustrious church dedicated to Our Blessed Mother. In the Confessio beneath the high altar we can venerate the relics of the Crib that held

4 the Infant Jesus. We see an ornate ceiling comprised of gold from the new world as well as a striking mosaic apse. In a beautiful side chapel of the Basilica we celebrate HOLY MASS. After Mass our bus takes us within walking distance of a favorite Roman gathering place, the Trevi Fountain. A few blocks further we reach the Spanish Square, where we see the beautiful Spanish Stairs leading up to Holy Trinity Church. Our bus carries us back to the hotel where we dine together. Thursday, October 15 - Our HOLY MASS this morning will be in the Jesuits' Gesu Church, where the founder of the Jesuit Order, St. Ignatius of Loyola, is buried. After Mass a tour guide joins us for a walking tour of popular sights in Old Rome. First we learn about the Gesu Church, where we have just celebrated Mass. A short walk takes us to the beautifully decorated Santa Maria Sopra Minerva Church. Inside are entombed St. Catherine of Siena as well as the great renaissance painter Fra Angelico. Adjacent to the church is the ancient Pantheon. Next we walk to another church, St. Louis of France, which contains 3 masterpiece paintings by Caravaggio, depicting scenes in the life of the Apostle St. Matthew. One more block away we enter the very popular Piazza Navona, in the center of which is the Fountain of the Four Rivers in front of the Church of St. Agnes. At the end of our tour some may want to stay for further exploration or for an opportunity to do some last minute shopping. For those who want to return to our hotel, our bus will transport them back to the hotel. This evening we go out together for a Farewell to Rome Dinner, enjoying food and wine at a restaurant near our hotel. Friday, October 16 - We check out of our hotel and transfer to the Rome airport for our return flights to the U.S., arriving this same day to our home city. TRAVEL TYME MANCHESTER ROAD ST. This deposit forms a part of your final payment, which must be received by us no later than 65 days prior to departure. Seats are limited on this Pilgrimage, so we suggest an early booking. CANCELLATIONS: Please make all cancellations in writing. The following cancellation charges apply: If cancelled 120 days or more prior to departure, a $75 administration fee is charged. If cancelled days prior, $300 penalty will be charged. If cancelled days prior, a $600 penalty will be charged. If cancelled 30 days or less, the total amount of the trip will be forfeited. In addition, once the airline tickets are issued, about 40 days prior to departure, the cost is non-refundable (approximately $1434). TRAVEL INSURANCE: We strongly recommend the purchase of travel insurance to recuperate the penalties charged for cancellation for health reasons. You would be fully covered, except if pre-existing conditions are evident. Even so, the insurer waives the exclusion for pre-existing conditions, if insurance is purchased within 15 days of deposit received by Travel Tyme. PASSPORT AND VISA: For travel to Italy a valid passport is required for all U.S. citizens. For those holding passports of other countries, visas may be required.
