THE BIDDING The Celebrant says B ELOVED in Christ, we are met together on this first day of Advent to prepare ourselves in heart and mind for the coming of the Lord Christ, our Savior and our Judge, to hear in Holy Scripture and sacred song the message of salvation wrought by him, and to be put in remembrance of the great day of Judgment.

2 As we prepare to celebrate Christ s first coming in Bethlehem, let us seek his grace to amend our lives so that we may be more like him who came to bring peace on earth, and let us examine our consciences so that we may be ready to greet him in his second coming when he shall judge both the quick and the dead. We therefore confess our sins in penitence and faith. The people kneel. Silence is kept. THE CONFESSION The Celebrant and People say A LMIGHTY and most merciful Father; we have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent; according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Celebrant says the words of absolution The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen. The Celebrant says Let us pray. COLLECT A LMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The People sit. THE FIRST LESSON Daniel 7 God reveals Christ and his kingdom to the prophet Daniel. All stand to sing as the Choir enters L O! he comes, with clouds descending, Once for our salvation slain; Thousand thousand saints attending Swell the triumph of his train: Alleluia! Christ the Lord returns to reign. 2. Every eye shall now behold him, Robed in dreadful majesty; Those who set at naught and sold him, Pierced, and nailed him to the tree, Deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see. Words Charles Wesley 3. Those dear tokens of his passion Still his dazzling body bears, Cause of endless exultation To his ransomed worshippers; With what rapture gaze we on those glorious scars! 4. Yea, Amen! let all adore thee, High on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory; Claim the kingdom for thine own: O come quickly! Alleluia! Come, Lord, come! Tune Helmsley 2

3 The People sit. THE SECOND LESSON Isaiah 40 The prophet proclaims good news to a people in exile. CANTICLE Benedictus in C Charles Villiers Stanford ( ) B LESSED be the Lord God of Israel: for he hath visited, and redeemed his people; And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us: in the house of his servant David; As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets: which have been since the world began; That we should be saved from our enemies: and from the hands of all that hate us; To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers: and to remember his holy Covenant; To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham: that he would give us; That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies: might serve him without fear; In holiness and righteousness before him: all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways. To give knowledge of salvation unto his people: for the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God: whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us; To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. The People stand. The Celebrant sings The Choir sings Let us proceed in peace. In the Name of Christ. Amen. The Procession forms and moves to the Chantry as the People sing H ARK! a thrilling voice is sounding; Christ is nigh, it seems to say; Cast away the works of darkness, O ye children of the day. 2. Wakened by the solemn warning, from earth s bondage let us rise; Christ, our sun, all sloth dispelling, Shines upon the morning skies. 3. Lo! the Lamb, so long expected, Comes with pardon down from heaven; Let us haste, with tears of sorrow, One and all to be forgiv n; 4. So when next he comes with glory, And the world is wrapped in fear, May he with his mercy shield us, And with words of love draw near. 5. Honor, glory, might, and blessing To the Father and the Son, With the everlasting Spirit While unending ages run. Words c. Sixth Century Latin Tune Merton COLLECT The Celebrant sings S Let us pray. TIR up thy power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let thy bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be honor and glory, world without end. Amen. The People sit for the Anthem. 3

4 ANTHEM N EVER weather-beaten sail more willing bent to shore. Never tired pilgrim s limbs affected slumber more, Than my wearied sprite now longs to fly out of my troubled breast: O come quickly, sweetest Lord, and take my soul to rest. Richard Shephard (b. 1949) Ever blooming are the joys of Heaven s high Paradise. Cold age deafs not there our ears nor vapour dims our eyes: Glory there the sun outshines whose beams the blessed only see: O come quickly, glorious Lord, and raise my sprite to thee! Israel s strength and consolation, Hope of all the earth thou art: Dear desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart. Words Charles Wesley 4. Amen. The People sit. THE THIRD LESSON Saint Luke 1 The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary. MOTET A VE Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Tune Puer Nobis Nascitur THE PEACE The Celebrant says People The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy Spirit. GREETINGS AND HOMILY The Right Reverend Geralyn Wolf XII Bishop of Rhode Island AT THE OFFERTORY, ANTHEM A ND I saw a new heaven and a new earth: For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, Behold the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away. Edgar Bainton ( ) Revelation 21:1-4 At the 4 p.m. service, please turn to page 8 for the Blessing. 5
