We are called by the Holy Spirit to proclaim and to live the gospel message through the sacraments and to spread the message of Jesus Christ by living out the example of God s power in our lives. Please note the changes in the Mass schedule for Christmas and New Years. Fourth Sunday of Advent, Saturday night, December 23rd: 5:15pm. Sunday morning, December 24th: 7:30, 8:45, 10:00, and 11:30am. (Regular weekend Mass schedule) Christmas Eve Mass, Sunday evening, December 24th: 4:00, and 5:30pm. Christmas Day, Monday morning, December 25th: 12:00am, 8:00, 10:00, and 11:30am. Feast of the Holy Family, Saturday evening, December 30th: 5:15pm; Sunday morning, December 31st: 7:30, 8:45, 10:00 and 11:30am. (Regular weekend Mass schedule) The Parish Office will be closed on Friday, November 10 in observance of Veteran s Day. New Year s Day is not a Holy Day of Obligation, therefore the only Mass for that day will be at 9am. The Mass intentions that were originally scheduled for the 7:30 and 8:45 Masses on Christmas Day will be offered at the combined Mass at the 8:00am Mass.

3 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Pastor s Letter November 5th begins our annual Vocations Awareness Week. I ask that you take some extra time this coming week to pray for more vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life; God knows we could always use more vocations! On the 14th of October, Mark Fletcher our Religious Education director and I went to Rockford for a Vocations workshop. Mark and I are trying to get together a vocations awareness program in the parish, to learn which of our parish youth believe that they have a call to the priesthood, diaconate, or consecrated life. Once we get the program going, we are hoping and praying that some adults in the parish might want to step up and be a part of this program. If you do, please give me a call. I will be ordering a few copies of the vocations book that was presented at the workshop, for those interested. Also, we still need more ushers, lectors, Eucharistic Ministers both at Mass and for the homebound and more! Here is the press release from the USCCB, about Vocations Awareness Week: WASHINGTON The Catholic Church in the United States will celebrate National Vocations Awareness Week, November 5-11, This annual event is a special time for parishes in the United States to actively foster and pray for a culture of vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life. Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the Chair of the US Bishops Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life, and Vocations, reminds us that each of us in the Church has a key role to play in the witness of our vocation in ordinary circumstances, As we go about our everyday life and most especially this week, we must keep vocations in our prayers, while, at the same time, being a mindful witness with our own vocation. We may never know how our lives may have an impact on someone else's story. Simply living out our call as disciples of Jesus Christ fully and joyfully in the world bears witness to the love of Christ as He generously bestows on each of us our own personal call. National Vocations Awareness Week, sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life, and Vocations, is designed to help promote vocation awareness and to encourage young people to ask the question: "To what vocation in life is God calling me?" Parish and school communities across the nation are encouraged to include, during the first full week in November, prayer and special activities that focus on vocation awareness. Observance of Vocation Awareness Week began in 1976 when the U.S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for the celebration. It was later moved to Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in January. The USCCB Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations moved the observance of National Vocation Awareness Week to November to engage Catholic schools and colleges more effectively in this effort. 4 Rediscovering Your Catholic Faith The Knights of Columbus, Council 736 is conducting a raffle over the next three weeks to raise money towards the purchase of replacement albs for the altar servers. There are flyers available at the back of church regarding prizes for the raffles. We look forward to a great fundraiser! October was Respect Life month. Annunciation s Respect Life group placed a display of crosses on our parish lawn. Each cross represents a baby lost to an abortion. This powerful visual display reminds us that we need to pray to change people s hearts from indifference to respect for life. We remember to value all human life and to preserve the dignity of the elderly and disabled as well. What does the fourth commandment require? It commands us to honor and respect our parents and those whom God, for our good, has vested with his authority What is the nature of the family in the plan of God? A man and a woman united in marriage form a family together with their children. God instituted the family and endowed it with its fundamental constitution. Marriage and the family are ordered to the good of the spouses and to the procreation and education of children. Members of the same family establish among themselves personal relationships and primary responsibilities. In Christ the family becomes the domestic church because it is a community of faith, of hope, and of charity What place does the family occupy in society? The family is the original cell of human society and is, therefore, prior to any recognition by public authority. Family values and principles constitute the foundation of social life. Family life is an initiation into the life of society What are the duties that society has toward the family? Society while respecting the principle of subsidiarity, has the duty to support and strengthen marriage and the family. Public authority must respect, protect and foster the true nature of marriage and the family, public morality, the rights of parents, and domestic prosperity.

5 School News Thank you to all of the school families and parishioners who supported Annunciation School at the Chipotle dine out night on October 25. The line was out the door at one point in the evening. The manager told me that we are the most well-attended fundraiser night that they host. The teachers and staff of Annunciation are very grateful for all the support from Father Patrick and our parish! Mrs. Jennifer Wardynski Interested in having your child attend Camp Rock? Camp Rock is a totally Catholic, four-day, three-night summer camp for junior high students grade 6-8 held at Dickson Valley Camp and Retreat Center in Newark, IL. There are two camp sessions in 2018; June 9-12, and August 2-5. Last year over 50 young people from Annunciation attended camp. On Tuesday Nov. 7 at 6:30 pm in school there will be a meeting for Annunciation parents who would like more information about Camp Rock. The first part of the meeting we can answer any questions you may have about camp, including: Who runs camp? What do the kids do at camp? How is it organized and supervised? What about camp facilities and sleeping arrangements? Join in the fundraising fun by eating out! Enjoy a night out of the kitchen and let Portillo s do all the work! November 16 th from 5 pm 8 pm on Randall Road in Batavia. The second part of the meeting will be the Fundraising group meeting. This is for anyone currently on the fundraising group, or anyone interested in having their child attend camp, and would like to work on fundraising efforts assist with the cost. If you are already on the fundraising group, please arrive at 6:30 pm to share your knowledge and experience with new families. Join us for the Scholastic Book Fair at Annunciation School! This is a great way to get a start on that Christmas shopping. Shopping Hours are Wednesday, Nov 8 th from 3:00-4:30pm and Thursday, Nov 9 th from 12:00-8:00pm. Can t make it to shop in person? Shop online starting Sunday, Nov 5 th until Nov. 25 th at bf/annunciationbvm. All items ordered online will be shipped to the school. All proceeds go to benefit Annunciation School. Baloun TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION What is the name of the pope s cathedral? If you said the Vatican, or St. Peter s, you were off by a few miles, since the answer is the Basilica of St. John, the Lateran, the Mother Church of all the churches of the world and the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It takes its name from the Lateran family, the Trumps of their day, who somehow ran afoul of the Emperor Nero. He seized all their property, including their vast Roman palace and estate. We don t know how Plautius displeased Nero so badly, but eventually all the Lateran property came to Constantine, the first Christian emperor, through his wife, Fausta. Early in the fourth century, when Christianity was at last legalized, Constantine gave the property to the church. Soon the great meeting halls were expanded and adapted. The oldest and most unchanged part of the Lateran is a vast, separate baptistery with steps leading down to a huge green basalt pool. Imagine what a triumphal moment the dedication of this public church building was for a community that had worshiped in secret for so long!
