St. Timothy s Episcopal Church Signal Mountain, Tennessee Celebration of the Renewal of Ministry May 20, :30 p.m.
Before the service: TALK to God. During the service: LISTEN to God. After the service: TALK to one another! Celebration of the Renewal of Ministry with The Rt. Rev. George D. Young III The congregation will gather in the Outdoor Commons for the Consecration of that worship space by the. Arise, go to Bethel, and dwell there, and make there an altar to our God. I will go to the altar of God: To the God of my joy and gladness. Let us pray. Silence The, standing at the Table with arms extended, says We praise you, Almighty and eternal God, that for us and our salvation, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to be born among us, that through him we might become your sons and daughters. Blessed be your Name, Lord God. We praise you for his life on earth, and for his death upon the cross, through which he offered himself as a perfect sacrifice. Blessed be your Name, Lord God. We praise you for raising him from the dead, and for exalting him to be our great High Priest. Blessed be your Name, Lord God. We praise you for sending your Holy Spirit to make us holy, and to unite us in your holy Church. Blessed be your Name, Lord God. The lays a hand upon the Table, and continues Lord God, hear us. Sanctify this Table dedicated to you. Let it be to us a sign of the heavenly Altar where your saints and angels praise you for ever. Accept here the continual recalling of the sacrifice of your Son. Grant that all who eat and drink at this holy Table may be fed and refreshed by his flesh and blood, be forgiven for their sins, united with one another, and strengthened for your service. Blessed be your Name, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; now and for endless ages. Amen. The good news of the Resurrection is retold in this lively hymn from Tanzania, blending 20th-century words with a traditional melody. In African call-andresponse practice, the stanzas would ordinarily be sung by a soloist or small group and the refrain by the whole congregation. Hymn During Asperges Christ Has Arisen, Alleluia! Congregation and Zammarin 2
Christ Has Arisen, Alleluia! continued... Asperges is a name given to the rite of sprinkling a congregation with baptismal water. It comes from the first word in the 9th verse of Psalm 51 in the Latin translation: You will sprinkle me, O Lord,... and I shall be cleansed. Receive the water in remembrance of your baptism, and sing joyfully in thanksgiving for this sacramental gift. After the hymn, the congregation processes to the nave in the order shown on page 15, following the choir. The Gathering Hymn Come Down, O Love Divine Hymn Come down, O Love divine, 2 O let it freely burn, seek thou this soul of mine, till earthly passions turn and visit it with thine own ardor glowing; to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; O Comforter, draw near, and let thy glorious light within my heart appear, shine ever on my sight, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. 3 And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till Love create a place wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling. The lauda spirituale, a kind of vernacular Italian sacred song from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, was translated into English in the 19th century, but received little notice until this tune was created for The English Hymnal. The Acclamation Alleluia, Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia. There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God s call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God, Creator of all. 3
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The people are seated. The Wardens stand near the. The states the purpose of the gathering; and concludes of St. Timothy s, you have reflected on your ministry and discerned your choice for a new Rector. Wardens We have chosen and called The Rev. Derrick Hill to be our Rector, and he has accepted. I commend your choice and affirm this call. The Letter of Institution of a Minister is read. The continues Are you, the people of St. Timothy s, ready to continue in your ministry, with Derrick as your priest? We are. The Wardens escort the Priest from the nave to the front of the assembly. The Word of God At this time, Lectors present the lectern Bible and say Derrick, with this Bible, we proclaim and hear God s living Word. Join us in the ministry of telling the Good News to the World. Rector Amen. Let us hear again the Good News of salvation. The spiritual cleansing of Israel parallels the gift of the Holy Spirit in the New Covenant. First spoken by God to Abraham (Gen. 17:7) is the heart of this passage: You shall be my people, and I will be your God. Ezekiel 36:24-28 Lector A Reading from Ezekiel. I will take you from the nations, and gather you from all the countries, and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you, and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances. Then you shall live in the land that I gave to your ancestors; and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. Lector Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Churches. Thanks be to God. 4
Silence for reflection II Corinthians 5:17-20 Lector A Reading from II Corinthians. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. Lector Silence for reflection All stand. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Churches. Thanks be to God. Canticle 9 Surely it is God who Saves Me Hymn 679 The Holy Gospel: Mark 1:9-11 Clergy The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. Clergy The Sermon Silence for reflection The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Valerie Gibson One way to describe the gospel is the promise that in Christ everything is transformed into newness. All mistakes, all deliberate sins, all old history is reconciled with Christ s resurrection. This is Paul s strong message to the congregation in the city of Corinth. The text is a slightly altered form of an adaptation of Isaiah 12:2-6 that appears as a canticle for Morning Prayer. This selection is identified as The First Song of Isaiah, and its folklike tune was composed in 1980/81 as a wedding gift. Mark s gospel reports the story of Jesus baptism with some irony: the one on whom the Spirit descends is himself the one who will baptize others with the Holy Spirit. All stand as the altar party makes their way to the Baptismal Font. Baptismal Hymn Wade in the Water Traditional Spiritual Congregation and Zammarin 5
Renewal of Baptismal Vows Derrick; people of St. Timothy s: in Holy Baptism we received full adoption through God s grace and full empowerment for ministry through the Holy Spirit. Will you work together as partners in the mission of the Church, to reconcile all people to God through Christ? We will, with God s help. The water of baptism signifies our eternal covenant with God. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to Christ, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The blesses the water. We pray you, O God, sanctify this water by the power of your Holy Spirit, that all who in baptism are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. Rector Let us renew the solemn promises and vows of Holy Baptism, by which we renounce Satan and all his works, and promise to serve God faithfully in God s holy Catholic Church. Water is poured into the font and the leads the renewal of baptismal vows. Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I do. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God s help. 6
Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God s help. The concludes the Renewal of Vows as follows: May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. Baptismal Hymn Wade in the Water Traditional Spiritual Congregation and Zammarin All sit Prayers A symbol of prayer is brought forward by Intercessors from the congregation. Derrick, with this Book of Common Prayer, we offer our prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings to God. Rector Amen. In the Spirit of God, who searches the heart and knows our deepest needs, let us pray for the Church, the world, and all who yearn for Christ s healing. A Litany for the Mission of the Church The congregation chants the bold responses to the litanist in the tone as presented. Holy God, in whom all things in heaven and earth have their being, 7
Chant is basically sung prayer. Its simplicity allows and promotes the centering of prayer within a person. Through its use the community is able to gain from its unison song a sense of oneness as the body of Christ. Jesus the Christ, through whom the world is reconciled to the Father, Have mercy on us. Holy Spirit, whose glory fills the world and searches the depths of God, Have mercy on us. Blessed Trinity, source of both unity and diversity, Have mercy on us. From blind hearts and petty spirits, that refuse to see the need of all humankind for your love, Savior, deliver us. From pride, self-sufficiency and the unwillingness to admit our own need of your compassion, Savior, deliver us. From discouragement in the face of pain and disappointment, and from lack of persistence and thoroughness, Savior, deliver us. From ignorance, apathy, and complacency that prevent us from spreading the Gospel, Savior, deliver us. O God, we pray for the gifts of ministry. Inspire our minds with a vision of your kingdom in this time and place. Touch our eyes, that we may see your glory in all creation. Touch our ears, that we may hear from every mouth the hunger for hope and stories of refreshment. Touch our lips, that we may tell in every tongue and dialect the wonderful works of God. Touch our hearts, that we may discern the mission to which you call us. Touch our feet, that we may take your Good News into our neighborhoods, communities, and all parts of the world. Touch our hands, that we may each accomplish the work you give us to do. Strengthen and encourage all who minister in your name in lonely, dangerous and unresponsive places. Open the hearts and hands of many to support your Church in this and every place. 8
Everliving God, whose will it is that all should come to you through your Son Jesus Christ: Inspire our witness to him, that all may know the power of his forgiveness and the hope of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. A flask of oil for healing is presented by Eucharistic Visitors. Derrick, with prayer, companionship and laying-on of hands we bring the reconciling presence of Christ to those who seek healing. Join us in this ministry by calling us to repentance, and assuring us of God s forgiveness and love. Rector Amen. Live without fear: your Creator has made you holy, loves you eternally, and reconciles you to one another. All stand. The new Rector says to the people Rector The Peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another in the name of Christ. Welcome and Greeting The Holy Communion Oblation Bearers bring the people s offerings of bread and the wine. Addressing the Rector, they say. Derrick, when we share the bread and the cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Join us at God s table to offer and bless our gifts of bread and wine. Rector Amen. Together, let us keep the feast. Offertory This is the Day John Rutter St. Timothy s Choir This is the day which the Lord hath made: we will rejoice and be glad in it. O praise the Lord of heav n: praise him in the height. Praise him, all ye angels of his: praise him, all his host. Praise him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars and light, let them praise the Name of the Lord. For he shall give his angels charge over thee: to keep thee in all thy ways. The Lord himself is thy keeper: the Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand; So that the sun shall not burn thee by day: neither the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: yea, it is even he that shall keep thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in: from this time forth for evermore. He shall defend thee under his wings. Be strong, and he shall comfort thine heart; and put thou thy trust in the Lord. (words from Psalms 118, 148, 91, 121, and 27) All stand. 9
The Presentation Hymn Called as Partners in Christ s Service This hymn is a celebration of mutuality and diversity as well as a challenge to the Christian community to live out a ministry of reconciliation and inclusion. This 20th-century text is set to a 19th-century tune. When the alms are brought forward, gifts for ministry may also be brought to the altar, and are received with the following words: We offer thanksgiving to God for the ministries represented by these symbols, and ask God s grace to live ever more fully into the commitments we have made in Baptism. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer B Prayer Book
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in Jesus Christ our Lord you have received us as your sons and daughters, made us citizens of your kingdom, and given us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus S-128 Then the Celebrant continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; The Celebrant continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 11
In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Timothy and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. And now as Christ taught us we are bold to pray, The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread S-155 The Invitation The Communion The bread and the cup are given to the communicants with these words. The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen. The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. Amen. 12
Music During Communion Psalm 139 Zammarin Bernadette Farrell Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart Congregation and Choir This reflection on Galatians 5:25 was written by a literary Anglican clergyman whose preaching drew people of many social classes to one of the formerly poorer London churches. The tune was created for Abide with Me (Hymn 662) but more often appears with the present text, which is also suggestive of tonight s Gospel reading. Post Communion Prayer Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ s Body and Blood. Now send us forth a people, forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. We have celebrated this new pastoral relationship in the great prayer of the Church. Derrick, I commend to your love and care the people of St. Timothy s. My brothers and sisters in Christ, I commend to your love and care your new Rector, colleague and friend, The Rev. Derrick Hill. 13
The Blessing Sending Hymn Alleluia! Jesus Is Risen! Composed in many short phrases, this Easter text moves from one image to the next in a series of joyful exclamations. The progression is from Easter resurrection to eschatological consummation, with each stanza ending in an exultant refrain. The author of the text, Herbert Brokering, who celebrates his 89th birthday tomorrow, has served as a congregational pastor and also as a consultant for many denominations in the area of creative worship. The Dismissal Clergy We leave from here to bear witness to Christ in faithfulness to the Scriptures, in harmony with the church of the ages, and in unity with all Christ s people. Alleluia! Alleluia! Thanks be to God, Alleluia, Alleluia! Voluntary Earth and All Stars Timothy Albrecht 14
