2 CHRIST, KING OF ALL On this, the final Sunday of the liturgical year, we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only king over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. At the end of time as we know it, Christ's work of restoring all things to unity and harmony with their Creator God will be completed. This Sunday, when we claim Christ as both our Shepherd and our King, we recognize our own calling to participate in Christ's saving work by caring for those whom Jesus calls "the least ones" (Matthew 25:45). - Copyright (c) J. 4 THEY ARE HERE! Christmas Cards and car magnet signs are available from the Knights of Columbus after all Sunday Masses, through the Advent Season, while supplies last. Donations are welcome. English and Spanish versions will be available. 36th ANNUAL ADVENT WORKSHOP! Our Advent Workshop will be held on Saturday, December 2 from 3 to 6pm in Parish Hall. This is the first time, in years, it s not during Thanksgiving weekend. So, please join us as we begin the Advent Season with Advent wreath making, crafts, and dinner provided by our own Knights of Columbus. There will be activities for children from 2 to 95! THE FOOD ASSISTANCE MINISTRY is in need of nonperishable food to reach out to the less fortunate in our midst. We appeal to our caring parish community to help us with items such as: jelly, peanut butter, spam, cold cereal, hot cereal, canned meats, Rice-a- Roni, hamburger helper, or cash/check to purchase the food we need. Please put the items in the food box in the vestibule of the Church or deliver them to the parish office or food center. Donations of check/cash should be clearly marked Food Assistance and put in the offering baskets at Mass. In the month of October 2017 we provided 1,470 meals. Thank you for your continued support. 6 LOOSE CHANGE COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND HOUSING FOR HOMELESS STUDENTS IN LA MESA Through the Interfaith Council, the Social Justice learned of a special fund designed to provide grants to cover security deposits for families trying to escape homelessness. All the families are referred by school counselors in the La Mesa Spring Valley School District, after demonstrating their capacity to pay the rent sustainably. The grants are a hand up, not hand out. With the blessings of Father Chris, our ministry chose to become a contributing member to the Interfaith Council by donating to this fund. In 2016, Housing for Homeless Students assisted five families with getting into permanent, stable housing, with a total of $6,080 in grant money. It is estimated that there are approximately 500 homeless students enrolled in LMSV schools. All families are screened to determine if they are able to continue with the rent payments. The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recognition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today's world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. --Rev.
