2 Divine Service (Setting Three, page 184 ff.) Because the eating and drinking of our Lord s body and blood in an unworthy manner may cause the Lord to discipline us, (1 Corinthians 11:27 28) and because partaking in the Lord s Supper is a public confession of the faith which is taught at this altar, the Lord s Supper is offered only to those who have been adequately instructed in the teachings and practices of this church and are able to examine themselves. Those who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, are asked to first speak with the Pastor before coming to the Table of our Lord. We consider it a privilege to offer a class of instruction for those unfamiliar with what we believe, teach, and confess. I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. 4 Northeast Nebraska Tornadoes Disaster Response A meeting of Lutheran Church Human Care and Disaster Relief entities was held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wisner, NE on Thursday, June 19, An urgent need for volunteers to remove debris from surrounding fields was identified as the most important need at this time. How Can I Help Now? Pray for the victims and those who are responding to the disaster If you would like to volunteer or bring groups to volunteer clean up resources please contact the following hotline services: 1 Wisner, NE Volunteer Hotline: West Point, NE Chamber of Commerce Volunteer Hotline: Wakefield, NE Volunteer Hotline: NE VOAD (Nebraska Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) Volunteers: NE VOAD is coordinating with various organizations that are volunteering to assist. According to Susan Epps, NE VOAD Chair, volunteers may arrive at the Wisner Pilger Jr./Sr. High (801 18th St.) on the west edge of Wisner at 6:30 a.m. to register. Registration for the day will end at 3 p.m. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Volunteers will work in Pilger between the 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Volunteers MUST check in each day at the Wisner Pilger Jr./Sr. High volunteers from a previous day will NOT be allowed into Pilger without going to the school first. Volunteers who arrive directly in Pilger will NOT be allowed to enter the town. Volunteers will be bused into Pilger and separated into groups to perform debris removal. Volunteers must have a photo ID and are encouraged to wear sturdy work shoes, long pants, hats, work gloves, safety glasses and bring insect repellent and sunscreen (lunch will be provided).volunteers are advised to stay hydrated as temperatures in the area are expected to reach into the 90s. 5 Volunteers may also report to the United Presbyterian Church incident command center in Laurel at 401 Wakefield Street.

5 6 Volunteers may also report to the Laurel Concord/Coleridge High School, at 502 Wakefield St.to walk fields and clean up debris. Damage Report: Reports of damages to the areas surrounding Pilger, Coleridge, Laurel, and Wakefield, NE were delivered by Rev. Terry Makelin and lay leaders of St. John s, Pilger; Rev. James Carretto of St. Paul, Wisner; Rev. Tim Booth of Faith, Stanton; Rev. William Engebretsen of Immanuel, Laurel; and Rev. William Bertrand of Immanuel, Wakefield, St. John s Wakefield and St. Paul Concord, respectively. Rev. Terry Makelin of St. John s, Pilger & First Trinity, rural Wayne (Altoona) and the members of St. John s experienced the total loss of the church parsonage in Pilger as well as the total loss of the church building. Fortunately, Rev. Makelin and his wife were not at home when the storms hit. At present, 22 member families of St. John s have experienced total losses of their homes, with more assessment still underway. Both Rev. Carretto and Rev. Booth reported significant damage to the farm places of members of St. Paul and Faith. Rev. William Engebretsen shared that the prolonged tornado in Laurel and Coleridge area affected two member families from Immanuel Lutheran in Laurel. One lost a shed and another had damage to their home as it shifted on its foundation. Rev. William Bertrand shared that rural Wakefield was hit hard with a trailer park destroyed and several homes gone. It was also learned from Rev. Chip Winter of Christ, Norfolk and Rev. Lee Weander of Our Savior, Norfolk that rural members from each congregation experienced significant damage. All the pastors and church members reported significant debris in the fields surrounding all the affected areas. Damage to the rural areas is not receiving as widespread of attention as the more populated areas. Removing the debris from the fields is an urgent need to prevent damage to farm equipment.

6 Some Identified Needs to be Addressed 1 Storage Capability to place and secure storage on the ground and around town is crucial to handle the influx of supplies, salvaged goods from church and member homes. Orphan Grain Train has placed storage containers in Pilger. 2 Vehicles/Transportation Most if not all the community has lost vehicles, some with glass out only, others are total losses. They need rentals, loaners, or borrowed vehicles temporarily. The coordination needed to do this is being investigated. 3 Rev. Makelin would like to be IN Pilger in the near future and will need to have some means of being on site in Pilger (Camper, Motor Home, etc.) 4 Food/Food storage and Refrigerators/Freezers A location to receive these and distribute them is being located. 5 Generators Two generators were provided during the meeting. Additional needs will be assessed. 6 Glass repair Cars that will still run lack windows & windshields. 7 Boxes, Packing Supplies, Moving Supplies 8 Watch for details on how possibly help with some of these needs as coordinated efforts How can I donate funding? click on the "Donate Now" button and specify tornado relief or specific storm in the restriction line. 3 Give to your local congregation, earmarked Pilger Relief or Tornado Relief. These dollars can be forwarded on to district and/or Synod accounts to be distributed directly to the victims of the storms. Please note: Congregational Treasurers are advised to open a special fund for accounting purposes for intake and outflow of dollars. Carl and Mary Pullmann will be moving to Austin, Texas in mid July, Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, in North Platte, will be hosting a farewell reception for the Pullmann s on Sunday, July 13, 2014, from 9:45 to 11:00 a.m. Beautiful Savior has also suggested showering the Pullmann s with cards, letters, and notes as a show of appreciation for the service the Pullmann s have showed to many congregations over the past years (including serving the vacancy here in 2010). For those who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods due to the deadly tornados that swept through Northeastern Nebraska last week. Mission Opportunities and Needs: That God would equip our hearts and minds to use the time, talents and treasures He has bestowed in us accomplishing the work He has set before us as members of His body, the Church.
