Holy Eucharist Christmas Eve December 24, :00pm
Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Welcome ~ Psalm 24:9 I am deeply grateful that we are together and that this parish is part of your observance of a holy Christmas. It is wonderful to pause with believers around the world celebrating the birth of the King of glory, the source and inspiration of justice, reconciliation, and peace. Joy to the world. The Lord is come. The Rev. Dr. James Herbert Cooper, Rector Welcome to Trinity Church. Please add your voice and heart to the worship: sing the hymns and pray the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus Table, and everyone s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together. 2
Prelude Hymn All stand and sing. 1 Once in royal David s city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. 2 He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly, lived on earth our Saviour holy. 3 And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love, for that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heaven above; and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone. 4 Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him; but in heaven, set at God s right hand on high; when like stars his children crowned all in white shall wait around. Please be seated Words: Cecil Francis Alexander ( ), alt Music:Irby, melody Henry John Gauntlett ( ) Motet Robert Parsons (c ) Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum: benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Amen. Luke 1:28, 42 Hymn All stand and sing. 1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. 2 For Christ is born of Mary; and gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth! and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth. 3 How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. 4 O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! Please be seated. Words: Phillips Brooks ( ) Music: St. Louis, Lewis H. Redner ( ) and Forest Green, English melody; adapt. and harm. Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) Motet Kenneth Leighton ( ) Lully, lulla, Thou little tiny Child, bye, bye, lully, lulla. Lulla, thou little tiny Child, Bye, bye, lully, lulla. O sisters too, how may we do, for to preserve this day this poor youngling for whom we do sing bye, bye, lully, lulla. Herod, the king, in his raging, charged he hath this day his men of might, in his owne sight, all young children to slay. that woe is me, poor Child for thee! And ever mourn and sigh, for thy parting neither say nor sing, bye, bye, lully, lulla. 15th century, from the Coventry Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors 3
Hymn All stand and sing. 1 It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven s all-gracious King. The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing. 2 Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heavenly music floats o er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, and ever o er its Babel-sounds the blessed angels sing. 3 For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old, when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and all the world give back the song which now the angels sing. Please be seated. Words: Edmund H. Sears ( ), alt. Music: Carol, Richard Storrs Willis ( ). Motet Tomas Luis de Victoria (c ) O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentem in praesepio. O beata virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Jesus Christum. Alleluia. O great mystery, and wondrous sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord lying in their manger! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia! 8 The Word of God First Lesson seated Isaiah 9:2-7 Following the reading Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 96 seated sung by the Choir Edward Cuthbert Bairstow ( ) Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing to the Lord, all the whole earth. Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; * proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations * and his wonders among all peoples. For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; * he is more to be feared than all gods. As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is the Lord who made the heavens. Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary! Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the Lord honor and power. Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; bring offerings and come into his courts. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth tremble before him. Tell it out among the nations: The Lord is King! * he has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea thunder and all that is in it; * let the field be joyful and all that is therein. Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy before the Lord when he comes, * when he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness * and the peoples with his truth. Second Lesson Titus 2:11-14 Following the reading Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 8

Holy Gospel Luke 2:1-20 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Following the reading Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rector The Nicene Creed standing We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People The people respond to each petition with Hear our prayer. 10

Anthems A Spotless Rose Herbert Howells ( ) A spotless rose is blowing, sprung from a tender root, of ancient seers foreshowing, of Jesse promised fruit; its fairest bud unfolds to light amid the cold, cold winter, and in the dark midnight. The rose which I am singing, whereof Isaiah said, is from its sweet root springing in Mary, purest Maid; for through our God s great love and might, the blessed babe she bare us in a cold, cold winter s night. O Magnum Mysterium Francis Poulenc ( ) O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum, et animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentem in praesepio. Beata virgo cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum. O great mystery, and wondrous sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord lying in their manger! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Hodie Christ natus est F. Poulenc Hodie Christus natus est; hodie Salvator apparuit; hodie in terra canunt Angeli laetantur Archangeli; hodie exsultant justi dicentes; Gloria in excelsis Deo alleluia. Today Christ is born; today the Saviour has appeared; today the Andels sing, the Archangels rejoice; today the righteous rejoice, saying: Glory to God in the highest. Alleluia. In the Bleak Midwinter Harold Darke ( ) In the bleak midwinter, Frosty wind made moan. Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone. Snow had fallen snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter long ago. Our God, Heav n cannot hold him, Nor earth sustain. Heav n and earth shall flee away, when he comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter, A stable place sufficed The Lord God Almighty Jesus Christ. Enough for Him, whom cherubim, Worship night and day, A breast full of milk, And a manger full of hay, Enough for Him, whom angels, Fall down before, The ox and ass and camel, which adore. What can I give Him, Poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb. If I were a wise man, I would do my part, Yet what I can I give Him, give my heart. Christina Rosetti ( ) 13
All sing, kneeling Words: Joseph Mohr ( ); tr. John Freeman Young ( ) Music: Stille Nacht, melody Franz Xaver Gruber ( ); harm. Carl H. Reinecke ( ) 14

The Christmas Blessing May Almighty God, who sent his Son to take our nature upon him, bless you in this holy season, scatter the darkness of sin, and brighten your heart with the light of his holiness. Amen. May God, who sent his angels to proclaim the glad news of the Savior s birth, fill you with joy, and make you heralds of the Gospel. Amen. May God, who in the Word made flesh joined heaven to earth and earth to heaven, give you his peace and favor. Amen.
