15 Office of Tenebrae The Lord Jesus loves us gave up his life for us. Few of us will be called to die way he died. Yet all of us must lay down our lives with him for him. 16 Please turn off all cell phones observe a spirit of prayerful recollection before Office of Tenebrae begins. Office of Tenebræ Tenebrae is Latin for "darkness." This service, originally combined offices of Matins Lauds on Holy Thursday, Good Friday Holy Saturday, takes its name from responsory, Tenebrae factæ sunt, darkness was wrought. Lamentations is a small psalter of communal laments over Jerusalem, following its destruction by Babylonians in 587 BC. The first four chapters are alphabetic acrostics (with a stanza for each of 22 letters of Hebrew alphabet), fifth has same number of verses as alphabet. Each time cantor sings various strophes of lamentations, choir first sings a brief chant-like setting of a letter of Hebrew alphabet in keeping with structure of book. The gradual extinction of all lights in Basilica symbolizes temporary triumph of prince of darkness over Light of World, loud noise, or strepitus, at conclusion of service suggests earthquake described in Passion narratives. The single cle left burning is symbol promise of Christ's triumph over death darkness.
