1 Welcome to Saint Ternan s Scottish Episcopal Church 4 December 2016 Second Sunday of Advent Collect Holy and gracious God, in whom we live and move and have our being: Kindle your love within us as we await the coming of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, that we might humbly serve others in his name, both now and forever. Amen. A reading from the prophet Isaiah: A shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder s den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious. In response to the reader s concluding lines, the People say: Thanks be to God. 1

2 The Gospel When the Gospel reading is in a communion service, in response to the reader s introduction, the People say: (8am) Glory be to thee, O Lord OR (11am) Glory to Christ our Saviour In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Now John wore clothing of camel s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our ancestor ; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. When the Gospel reading is in a communion service, in response to the reader s concluding lines, the People say: (8am) Thanks be to thee, O Lord, for this thy Glorious Gospel OR (11am) Praise to Christ our Lord Post Communion Prayer Faithful God, we thank you for feeding us with this heavenly banquet. In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for All Saints Church in Buckie; for Bishop Mark, our interim Bishop; for all those involved in the election of our next Bishop, that the process will be grounded in prayer and the Holy Spirit; and for all those around the Diocese working together during to keep things moving forward through the Episcopal vacancy. 4 Pattern of Worship at St Ternan s WEEKDAYS Tuesdays 9.00 am Eucharist with Discussion in the Church Vestry Thursdays 10.15am Prayer Book Communion in the Choir Stalls SUNDAYS 8.00 am Eucharist (1970) am 1 st, 2 nd, and 4 th Sundays - Eucharist with Choir 3 rd Sundays two options: Choral Matins in the Church All Age Contemporary Eucharist Service in the Church Hall 5 th Sundays Family Communion Service with Choir (contemporary translation of traditional forms) 6.30 pm - First Sundays- Traditional Evensong All ages are welcome to participate in our worship. Sunday School is normally offered during the 11 o clock service on the first, second, and fourth Sundays, except during school holidays. We also have an activity table for younger members in front of the first pew. We encourage our smaller friends to sit at the front so that they can see. All are welcome at this communion table. Gluten-free wafers available; please tell one of the welcomers if you prefer that form of the consecrated bread, and they will alert the priest. Monday 5 December Banchory Young Musician of the Year Woodend Barn, 7.30pm Concert free, donations welcome 18 exceptional musicians to perform organized jointly between the Rotary Club and the Banchory Academy. Always an amazing event. Tuesday 13 December at 7.30pm, St Thomas Aboyne Meet the Bishop gathering for Bishop Laura from Connecticut, with singing, food, fellowship, and fun for all our Deeside congregations. She ll also be in Banchory 15 December for the Thursday communion at 10.15, and Taize service at 7.30pm that evening, and going along with Lisa to the Dean s talk on Wednesday night (see next item).
