3 Communications from the Bishop Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Ash Wednesday, February 18, our diocese will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. The collection offers a way for Catholics in the United States to stand in solidarity with those who experience the ongoing effects of living under difficult circumstances across the globe. Grants funded by this collection support pastoral projects, scholarships, and Catholic organizations working in areas formerly under Soviet control. The bishops and people of these regions still face enormous challenges in restoring church structures and in rebuilding the cultural and spiritual life of the community, tasks that are often complicated by a lack of religious freedom. One funded group, a Czech association for women and children and the protection of unborn life (Obcanske sdruzeni ONZ pomoc a poradenstvi pro zeny a divky), has worked for 23 years to reduce the rate of abortions in the Czech Republic. When the association opened its doors in 1990 after the Velvet Revolution, half of all pregnancies in the country ended in abortion. Through innovative counseling and support programs at six regional centers for women in difficult situations, the association has played a major role in reducing the abortion rate from 50 percent down to 20 percent. The centers work to protect the human dignity of both mothers and children, advocating for the right to life of the unborn. Recently, the association experienced a crisis when the Czech government withdrew operational support for its programs. The Subcommittee on the Church in Central and Eastern Europe provided a critical bridge grant that allowed the association to continue its operations while searching for a permanent funding solution. In 2014, the Czech Bishops Conference announced that it would fund the association's operating expenses from its own budget, thereby guaranteeing the future of the association and its crucial work. In order for projects like this one to continue, the collection needs your help. Please be generous. Your donation will continue to restore and build the future of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Thank you and God bless you. Sinceramente suyo en Cristo, Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet Monseñor R. 4 Reflections from Fr. David Our brothers and sisters in the traditions of Eastern Orthodox Christianity refer to the time before Holy Week and Easter as Great Lent a much more structured time in the life of those Churches and their adherents than we retain in the Western Church. In the Eastern Church, there are many prescribed practices: the daily liturgies and prayers change and there is a great emphasis on fasting, prayer and reading the scriptures. Interestingly, while we in the Western Church eliminate the word Alleluia from our prayers, hymns and rituals during Lent, in the Eastern Church the use of this word dramatically increases during Lent: for the individual believer, the Lenten disciplines of fasting and prayer are meant to be a joy rather than a drudgery! And the spiritual growth that is meant to occur during this season cannot be realized without the help and grace of God, in the presence of which we cannot but shout: Alleluia! So, ok...moving beyond this interesting information, Lent begins this week for us! How can we Catholic Christians here at St. Mary Immaculate Parish have a great Lent? Lent is not really meant to be a somber time but rather a time of intentional activity designed both to draw us closer to the Lord as well as prepare us for the profound celebrations of the Paschal Mystery : the death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Here are some suggestions for a great Lent : + Don t forget our Annual Parish Pizza Night on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. It is hosted by the Men s Club and is a VERY inexpensive pizza dinner for families and individuals. We serve pizza from many, many surrounding pizza restaurants. + Ash Wednesday: this day brings more people to Church than Christmas or Easter. It is a great way to take our first step in our Lenten journey with the Lord. + The Sacrament of Reconciliation: while we often give up things for Lent, one of the most important things to give up at any time is our pride (whatever excuses we use to convince ourselves that we don t have to go to Confession) and our own comfort level with our sins (the excuses we use to convince ourselves that our faults and faithless failings don t really matter that much). During Lent, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered every Friday evening (English, Spanish and Polish!), Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning (God bless you, Fr. Gerold) and, if you require, by private appointment. There is also a parish Ways to have a Great Lent Reconciliation service at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25 and a Reconciliation Service starting at 2:00 p.m. on Divine Mercy Sunday, April Friday evening Fish Fry dinners served by the Knights of Columbus: this wonderful St. Mary s tradition is a way of enjoying great food, great fellowship and following our required Lenten fast of meatless Fridays. + Reading the Bible: how about joining one of our ongoing parish Bible studies? + Spending time with the Lord: there is no better place for prayer, peace and consolation than our Adoration Chapel, located in the North Wing of the church building. It is open from Sundays after the 6:00 p.m. Mass until Friday evening at about 9:00 p.m. During that time, the chapel is open 24 hours a day. Spend time with Jesus!! + Doing works of mercy: there is no better way to connect our lives with something greater than ourselves than to do something worthwhile for someone in need. + Connecting with friends in faith, or seeking to add a deeper bond in faith in our relationship with family members or with a friend or coworker. Invite them to Mass!! + Spiritual Reading: there are a lot of free downloads of great spiritual classics on Amazon.com and other sites. Our parish library is full of great literature of faith. There is also good reading material to be found in the Adoration chapel, to be used while we are there spending time with Jesus. + Fasting: what is it that you can stop doing, stop consuming, stop spending time on that would be spiritually profitable for you? As you know, I am not a big fan of giving up candy, deserts, etc. Why? What we give up is meant to be replaced by Jesus...fasting from anything is meant to draw us closer to the Lord, who gave up everything for us...for you! No easy fasts for Lent!! + Many of our parishioners make it a practice to attend Mass daily during the Lenten season. Here at St. Mary s, daily Mass is every morning at 7:30. + Keep a spiritual journal. If you engage in any of the above spiritual activities or others, how about journaling about your journey while walking closer with the Lord? Focus your thoughts and express what is in your heart. A focused mind and heart is what Lent, and our life in Christ, is all about. My friends, may God help us all to have a great Lent! Page 4 One Family in Faith Making Christ Known February 15, 2015

Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. The CMAA is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a pledge and pay it in 10 payments. A significant gift to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. The Annual Appeal provides a significant portion of the budget of our Diocese of Joliet. Most dioceses in the country conduct an appeal, once a year, to help with the costs of providing services and programs to their parishes and people. The Diocese of Joliet is no exception. As you prayerfully consider a pledge to the CMAA, please reflect on God s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the diocese, and to the work of the church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. God extends His mercy to us each day, and you can be a part of Extending God s Mercy to others through the CMAA. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our diocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference, because all parishes participate in the campaign, and the gifts of many enable our diocese to deliver needed education, ministry, and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they glorify Him by enabling the work of our diocese. For those of you, who were unable to make a decision about your commitment this weekend, please prayerfully consider doing so online at jolietdioceseappeal.org or by returning a Commitment/In-Pew Weekend envelope to the parish next week. If you received a pledge form in the mail, you may return it via mail. After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal of $207,651 in paid pledges, 65% of any additional funds are returned for use in our parish. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.
