2 A Letter From The Rector Dear friends of St. Gianna Oratory and of the Institute of Christ the King, Tucson, Sunday December 21st, A. D I look forward very much to celebrating Christmas with you in beautiful Tucson! In a few days we will kneel in front of the manger and adore the Lord. Our hearts will be united with the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the most pure heart of St. Joseph, and with the hearts of all the faithful in heaven and on earth, who offer to God the Father Almighty a never-fading thanksgiving for the Incarnation and Birth of His Divine Son Jesus Christ. Let us rejoice with the nine choirs of Holy Angels! Let us celebrate the Solemnity of Christmas deeply united with our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, with our Bishop, the Most Rev. Gerald Kicanas, with the family of the Institute of Christ the King, with Holy Family Catholic Parish, and with our families, friends, and loved ones! Let us thank the Lord at this Christmas for all the graces and gifts He has bestowed on us in the bounty of His Mercy! And let us again be grateful at the crib for the gift of St. Gianna Oratory! To all of you, Dear Faithful, I extend my best wishes for a Blessed Christmas and will offer, as a sign of gratitude for your welcoming charity, the three Masses of Christmas for you and your loved ones. Let us use the few remaining days to prepare our hearts for the Divine Infant King. Michael Schmitz about the Constitutions of the Institute of Christ the King which were approved recently by the Holy See. The Constitutions help us to live our spiritual identity in the Institute of Christ the King ever more deeply. The priests of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest are with the recent decree of the Vatican officially called Canons instead of Fathers, even if the Faithful in ordinary terms might continue to address us as Father. Please note that my address has changed to canon.von_menshengen@institute-christ-king.org. In this week s bulletin I will finish the sketch of my life in the Institute, starting with the Consecration of St. Mary s Oratory in Wausau, Wisconsin, in the traditional Roman Rite on May 31, 2003 by Archbishop Raymond Burke, at that time Bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse. I invite you to take a tour online of this event that marked the summit of three years of prayer and work of the Institute in the United States to renovate this architectural pearl in the true High Gothic Style. The joint efforts of Msgr. Michael Schmitz, art director Abbé Alexander Willweber, and the entrepreneur and benefactor Jack Scholz started this marvelous project and brought it to completion. American and European artists and craftsmen worked together to realize this beacon of liturgical beauty. Once this oeuvre was completed, faithful from near and far flocked to visit and to pray and, especially, to attend the solemn liturgy. We were able to give tours and explanations of Holy Mass to many groups, including Protestant pastors and their school classes. The Institute reassigned me to Germany in 2004 and I moved to Bayerisch Gmain in beautiful southern Bavaria. The Headquarters of the Institute in Germany is located in this town between Salzburg and Munich, and I was entrusted by my superiors with the care for our apostolates in the German speaking countries (Germany, Austria, and Basel in Switzerland). I am very grateful to my confreres and to the many lay collaborators for their generous and untiring support. My work included the formation of candidates in preparation for their entry into our International Seminary near Florence, as well as the publication of our German newsletter and administrative responsibilities. Since 2005, I also traveled to Sweden, where the Institute was invited by the Bishop of Stockholm to celebrate the Latin Mass at his cathedral, as well as in the university town of Lund in the south of Sweden. Every year in early August the lay society of the Institute meets in our house of formation in Bayerisch Gmain for several days for recollection and conferences. This was for me always a special time as these faithful are members of the family of the Institute of Christ the King. I keep the best memories of the Marian lay association to whom the Institute was asked by the Bishop of Augsburg to minister, and where I had the joy to marry several couples and baptize many children. When I was about to leave for Tucson, we received a letter from the Archdiocese of Munich (on my 40th birthday September 18) in which we were granted two apostolates, one in Bad Reichenhall and one in Traunstein, the city where Pope Benedict XVI had attended his minor seminary and celebrated his first Solemn High Mass after his ordination. Thirteen years of daily Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in our German House of formation and many sacrifices from the faithful have led to this good development. 3 CONSTITUTIONS OF THE INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING APPROVED BY THE HOLY SEE: CANONS AND OBLATES LIVE PROPER IDENTITY ACCORDING TO CANONICAL FORM OF LIFE. With the Decree Saeculorum Rex signed by the President of the Commission Ecclesia Dei, Dario Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos, in the name of the Roman Pontiff, the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest was elevated to the status of Pontifical Right on October 7th 2008, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. This favor was granted after a mature deliberation conducted according to the traditional procedures of the Roman Curia, including several positive Apostolic Visitations and the affirmative consultation of over fifty Bishops in whose Dioceses the Institute is present. The canonical form of the Institute s life is mainly expressed in the emphasis its constitutions put on the regular and solemn celebration of the Sacred Liturgy during the day, foremost through the solemnity of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which is the focus of the community life, but also through the Holy Office, which, in its recited or chanted form, regulates and sanctifies the daily work. After the example of the secular Canons in the history of the Church, the Canons and Oblates of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest have the goal to spread the kingdom of Christ and to evangelize the world through the sanctification of life with the liturgical celebrations instituted by Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest and cultivated by the Church under the guidance of the Holy Ghost. For this reason, the members of the Institute make the glorification of God in the Liturgy the focus of their fraternal unity and of their apostolic work. Both are expressed in their Choir habit, which underscores their canonical order of life. The blue color of the choir habit signifies their consecration to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception as their main patroness and their devotion to St. Francis de Sales as the example of their desire for an ever greater charity. With these are combined the spirit of true Romanity and a faithful attachment to the Vicar of Christ on earth. Now approved by the Holy See, the Institute s canonical order of life as established by its constitutions under the governance of Monsignor the Prior General seals the distinctive identity of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. The Canons and Oblates of the Institute are humbled by the fact that their very own charism and identity was approved by the highest ecclesiastical authority. They promise to live the spirit and letter of their constitutions to the fullest, well knowing that perfection is a gift of God and that all their efforts can only come to fruition if commenced, accompanied and accomplished by divine grace. Traditionally, priests living in a community attached to a church and dedicated to the celebration of the solemn Latin liturgy but without religious vows have been called secular canons and were distinguished by their own choir dress. In 2006, the Cardinal Archbishop of Florence, responsible for the overview of the Institute's life, has bestowed upon our priests and oblates their specific choir dress. The choir dress consists of a rochet, a mozzetta, the cross of St. Francis de Sales on a blue and white ribbon, and a biretta with a blue pom-pom. The superiors have a blue mozetta, the priests have a black mozetta with blue piping, and the oblates wear the cross and ribbon on the surplice The blue stands for our complete dedication to the Blessed Mother and is traditionally the color shown on St. Francis de Sales in most paintings of him. St. Gianna Events Festival of Lights Join us for an evening Christmas walk through WINTERHAVEN on Dec. 26th. This year celebrates the 58th anniversary of the Winterhaven Festival of Lights! Every year visitors from near and far are welcomed for two spectacular weeks in December. We will see Winterhaven's majestic trees decorated in dazzling lights and will enjoy seeing wonderful decorations on its many homes. There is no entrance fee to the Festival. We will meet with Fr. von Menshengen at 6:30 p.m. at the North entrance of Prince Rd. and Treat Ave. Parking is undesignated on the road, so please arrive early.
